i feel that most people defending anti-repair/user unfriendly phone design are apple fans that dont realise that apple can be wrong, and/or they dont want to admit that apple did something wrong because of buyers remorse/guilt. When i was a teenager, I would defend nintendo relentlessly. but when i got older i realised that i can like something while still seeing its flaws. I still like nintendo, and play there games regularly, but at the end of the day, I know nintendos in the wrong when they shut down emulation, or fan games, and i wont defend them doing it, if anything I agree with the people calling nintendo out on it.

Been with you 100% since day one Hugh. I've been into phone customisation since the Galaxy s4 and iPhone 4s. Making something your own once you've bought it is done EVERYWHERE. You don't buy a house and leave it exactly as it is, no, you add to it, to make it feel better for you or fit a certain aesthetic you have in mind. Greed is the only thing these manufacturers know anymore, and that passes down to customers as they become so used to just buying another product once even the smallest thing happens to their current device. No wonder the planet is just a huge landfill now, overflowing with eWaste. If money can be made, the world will always suffer.

Every week, someone drops an Apple phone or five (5) at my home so that I can repair them. Why? They can't get any of the local shops 0:05 to repair them. I seldom see Android devices because they're easily repaired by the local shops. If I sound like a crotchety old man, it's because I am. I'd rather goof off in my old age as a retired technician than mess with devices that are intentionally designed to be difficult, if not impossible, to repair.

I would personally NEVER attempt to repair a phone myself as I don’t have the technical know-how nor the inclination (I usually regard a broken device as a good excuse to get that shiny new device I’ve been wanting) but there is simply ZERO justification for these companies to disallow third-party repair of their products and especially to actively design them in such a way as to make proper repairs impossible (i.e. Apple’s draconian tactic of labeling parts as “not genuine”, even though they are, just because they were replaced without Apple’s blessing). These tactics are blatantly anti-consumer and are a naked attempt by the manufacturers to force people to buy new devices when they really should not need to. When you buy any product you should OWN said product and be allowed to do whatever you want with it, period. Especially with how ridiculously priced these new devices already are these days.

Preventing third-party repair may be even MORE dangerous than allowing it. My current daily driver, an MSI GF63 8RC, is four years old, give or take. While not everything inside is user-replaceable, such as the CPU and GPU being soldered to the motherboard, it's really easy to clean and all the other major components can be upgraded or replaced. That includes the battery. Now, as soon as I mentioned the battery, you probably know where I'm going with this. Well, a year and a half ago, I noticed that my laptop's chassis was warped a bit towards the front and my space bar and touchpad were becoming increasingly unresponsive. I looked up a disassembly video on my laptop's model and saw that the battery was towards the front of the laptop - the same place where I was having problems. So I carefully opened up my laptop, following the disassembly video and was met with a nasty spicy pillow. I was able to get rid of it and order in a new battery which I was able to use instead without any complications. Now, imagine if I had to go to, say MSI to get that battery replaced for whatever reason. I would have to either take my laptop to MSI myself or mail it to them. Would it even survive the trip? Not helping things was that that battery had been swollen like that for quite some time. Who knew how much longer that battery had left before exploding? And I'm pretty sure spicy pillows and aeroplanes don't mix. Replacing the battery myself was the safest route to take, as it was the quickest and negated the dangers of transporting the device to the people who supposedly had to be the ones to fix it, be it poor handling of the device or taking it many, many metres into the sky.

I work as a service tech/OTP for a restaurant group I constantly hear from my stores "why not just get new equipment instead of repairing this OLD stuff" I've explained multiple times how these items are designed to ve repaired and how repair parts are far less expensive. Right now so many people only see replacing with new as the right way of doing things instead of fixing items

I once knew a guy in university, he was an army veteran. He used to tell us how many Apple computers and products were constantly lying around, in the field mind you, because they weren't allowed to fix them. Apple needed to send someone to "repair" the devices, which took a long time, and it was easier to use older, non-Apple, devices that they could still use and repair.

4:30 To which I go a step further: If that was the issue, let your users go to your website, and put a claim to disable that phone's parts when it is actually needed by showing proof of purchase. Then push an update to all your models with the blacklist so those parts stop working for repairs. They sure could considering they have no qualms of sending telemetry back, so a few kb of data for a blacklist should not be a big deal. You achieve the same, without killing reparability. But that ain't the goal, as we all know by now.

Yeah, I don't get it. I've only ever had "budget" phones with plastic panels (LG Escape 3, Motorola G Power, and now a OnePlus Nord N10 5G), and the worst that can happen to them is getting scuffed. At no point have they ever come close to being shattered.

Apple tried to pull this shit when replacing the _display_ alone was enough to disable the Face ID sensor array, even when it's proven that the latter wasn't even glued or hardwired to the display assembly. It was never about security - if it was, Apple wouldn't casually hand over iCloud encryption keys in China to Xi Jinping.

The glass back was the single worst step in smartphone evolution. It adds nothing to the device. The device if anything is much more fragile because glass although scratch resistant(to a point) is much more brittle so most of the users end up putting case on it anyway so why not have removable back panels in the first place. If done well it won't make wierd noises. Hope EU will focus on that after pushing Apple to use USB-C finally.
