I’m so glad that you separate what is rightfully called a romantic idea of Norse myth, and what is actually there in the sources that is available to us without unnecessary and quite frankly ANNOYING speculation. Once again thank you so much for your knowledge Dr. Crawford.

I love it when space missions and proyects get named after mythological figures.

Just an FYI and quite obvious from the naming scheme, but there is a parallel mission Muninn in which the Swedish astronaut Marcus Wandt will fly with Axiom Space

The stars are in the shape of a bindrune of Algiz and Raidho, which is very common these days to represent "safe travels." It seems to be a totally modern invention, based on Algiz representing protection (which seems totally ahistorical and dates from Ralph Blum in 1982) and Raidho meaning travel (because the name means "ride")

I think new pagans are associating algize with the Elk and the Elk with Freyer, with him wielding antlers to such effect. That said it is defiantly a modern adaptation.

With the various forms of (to me) complex grammar, not to mention the format of poems it shows how rich the old Norse language is which can indicate how rich their culture was. I don't see them as backwards or brutes but highly educated and advanced. I see why the history must be preserved.

I was in the Icelandic History museum wondering why their culture was preserved after Christian conversion. The pope at the time when the Norse Icelanders bent the knee to the Catholics declared their culture Christian and thus worthy of preservation. They really walked a cultural tightrope keeping their myths alive.

Thanks very Mr. Crawford. Always interesting. As a person who enjoys trying to get to original source material when studying history, I very much appreciate your tactfully sticking to original sources.

it's interesting to speculate that odin fears for the loss of his thought and memory when his name, if i've gathered correctly, itself means mad (if this is to be understood as insane).

You know despite knowing a bit about family history and all that I've always wondered if my surname (the one you see here, Ó Duinn) has any overlapping history with the concept of Óðinn because.... well I'm pretty sure the similarities are glaringly obvious. Despite the family name being related either to the Celtic god (Donn, god of the dead) or the words "dark" or "brown" the reason I've always wondered -despite the similarity in spelling- is that the family comes from southeastern Ireland near County Laois, Kildare, Carlow just south of Dublin -- Dublin being settled by the "Vikings" in 800-something AD and all that. Just a lot of similarities that have always seemed a bit curious.

Duinn is an archaic form of Doinn, which is the genitive of Donn, meaning 'brown', as you said, or perhaps in this case more like 'brown-haired' or 'brunette'. I would read 'Ó Duinn' as 'descendant of the brown-haired one'.

There's a bindrune of Algiz and Raidho that is common among modern Heathens as a protection amulet on the road, used kinda like the St Christopher medal is for Catholics. My ex husband swapped from one to the other when he left Catholicism. I think that's what they arranged those stars in order of.

Any time birds are the topic you know the lecture is going to be great. I was wondering if there's anything in the language to suggest the birds are being used as messengers instead of 'reporting back' perhaps people could be attaching messages to their feet like pigeons?

A small update: A Swedish astronaut is now on the ISS at the same time as the Dane. His mission is called Muninn. So Huginn and Muninn are currently orbiting earth together.

I have a question about the surname Hudson my understanding is it's Norman for son of Hugh since the Normans were Frankish with a Norse ancestry is there any link with or to old Norse and possible hugin or is it completely Frankish any help would be appreciated
@jostein1195
@jostein1195 Жыл бұрын
Hugh has a purely Frankish origin, not Norse. But Frankish, like Norse, was a Germanic languge, so the root of Hugh is the same as for Hugin - 'mind'.

Regarding the six stars: the symbol they mean is certainly "raido" (R) with the lower diagonal leg extended further out the back and to the top of the letter. I have seen people say it means "safe travels" often. I am not sure where that comes from, but I have seen it before and it matches the six stars.

Hello Dr. Crawford! I spend a great deal of my free time studying LGBTQ aspects of Old Norse culture (my dad didnt react well to my coming out, but mother's Norwegian family did and I fell down a rabbit hole of research soon after) and I was wondering if you've ever covered the Saga of Grettir, who is mentioned in his saga to be queer. Its my favorite Icelandic Saga next to the story of Hervore/Hervara.

When the ravens are sent out and he wonders if they'll return it just reminds me of Noah, where after the flood he first sent ravens and they didn't come back (presumably feasting on the corpses of the drowned).

Just gonna tickle the algorithm here and give a unicode example of the plausible bindrune of ᛉ+ᚱ other comments have mentioned the constellation may be representing. Might save someone a quick google if they don't have the rune names memorized.
