Never ceases to amaze me that netflix has a blank check to ruin whatever anime they want (cowboy bebop, death note, yu yu hakusho, etc) but this movie, which was actually a pretty good adaptation, never got a sequel. Not to say there’s no chance of it but it has been quite a few years.

She should have used her legs to latch onto him (pushing the feet together with one against his back and the other against his chest). Then bring the knees up to her chest and grab his torso with the free hand. She has the physicality to do that pretty easily, she just didn’t think of it.

Also the sword didn’t slice any further (probably the cable is just to thicc. So she could have grabbed him with her feet and climbed back up with her arms.

@@marcelobravo3074 it's not a matter of being strong. His arm was basically falling apart (either due to how shoddy his body was made or the impact from the prior collision or both). At that point, any movement could further the damage his already fragile arm joint. It's basic physics, you're always fighting the weight of the object you're trying to move (weight = gravitational pull × mass). In this case, she's trying to pull him up - the direct opposite direction of the gravitational pull - in an extremely inoptimal position using his arm that's already falling apart. Just casually throwing him upwards suddenly without thinking would completely destroy his arm faster.

I just watched the movie for the first time and thought this scene was brilliant. This is the first time I’ve seen someone in the classic “Please Come With Me” situation and successfully convince the second party to abandon their plan. I really believed Hugo would survive. I think if she wrapped her legs around his torso and pulled him up he’d have lived but nevertheless it was a heartbreaking moment. One of the best movies I’ve ever seen.

More than anything, I feel they've blended together crucial elements of Titanic's slushy conclusion with that of a Cliffhanger derived loss of life. Regardless of gender switch, I feel it works well enough - without getting bogged down by sentimentality in the process. Unlike a structural integrity element to the lad's overall design, which when compromised, might have been the ultimate writing on the wall for his survival chances. Who knows?
