My good friend, Jon, leant me his HUK dimple lock pick set so I could review it. As a long term Honest Dong Shi lock pick set user, what would I think of these? 🤔

how about the dimple bump sets ?

Thanks Ash. It comes down to 'How much is your time worth?' As an amateur, I'd probably go for the HDS set, and use some elbow grease, but that HUK set certainly is tempting.

Happy New Year and another great review LN. If I had to recommend a set to someone, then I would go with the HUK set if they just want to pick up a pick and a dimple lock and start picking. If they have the time and the confidence, then the Honest Dong set is definitely worth getting. I would avoid the Sparrows Black Flag set unless you find it very cheap, as it has a good range of tensioners. Hopefully Sparrows will be re-releasing a new and improved one. Obviously the Multipick set is the best, but at a cost of almost 10 times that of the HUK set, you really need to be picking a lot of dimple locks!

Wojtek just recommend this to me. Glad to get a chance to see your thoughts. I'm nervous to try dimple locks and some flag sets are expensive. I worry I'll be complete rubbish at it. Thanks and awesome video!

Ever be nervous and don’t ever worry about not being great with dimple locks in the beginning. I was rubbish at dimple lock picking to begin with, but they are great fun with practice! Remember, the only locks you are guaranteed to not be able to pick are the ones you never try 😃👍

Was just looking at this kit on ebay and couldn't tell much about the rounding. Thanks for showing and explaining. We have very few dimple locks here in Canada. Almost everything is the standard Shlage or similar pin tumbler for door locks and almost all Masterlock for padlocks.. so I would have to grab some locks specifically shipped over... which is still probably worth doing.

I bought a set of the Honest Dong’s which came with a roll up holder, which I intend to modify to make some specialized picks for sliders and finger pins. The cost per pick is less than most of the name brand regular picks (Peterson, Sparrows, Multipick, Southord, etc). I think that HUK set would work great for that as well. For dimple picking you’d have a hard time getting me away from my Multipicks, but as you pointed out, the value for the cost of some of those Chinese sets is outstanding. Very nice review, thanks!

Great review, and I particularly appreciate the comparison to the Honest set as well... which is also my preference for the very same reasons you expressed! Probably the best sets for the money until someone wants to step up their game and go for a MultiPick or Spoox, which to my understanding starts out using the Honest pick tips for finishing.

That is my pickset. The finish out the box is one I like personally. The pick handles allow for different placement in your hands. You can hold them like a pen or you can hold them like a knife. Holding it look a screwdriver or knife allows for you to stand up while picking a lock on a door.

The hub set is my goto for dimple picks only thing I think the set is missing would be non sided flags with no curve other than that and some tension wrenches great set
@guiorgy4 жыл бұрын
How would you compare it to the Sparrows Black Flag set you've reviewed before? Or the Honest set to the Sparrows?
@gravitronlocksport99254 жыл бұрын
The Sparrows Black Flags are terrible (which is why they no longer sell them and are redesigning them). They are very springy, and have quite a few defects in the metal from manufacturing. I don't know a single person that uses them or has ever said anything positive about them (other than the tension wrenches they come with). The Huk set and the Honest Dongs are nearly identical in quality. They are the next best thing if you don't want to shell out $200 for the MP dimples. The HUK set comes better finished, you'll need to do some filing and sanding to get the Dongs to be usable. But the Dongs come with a neutral flag, which is very good for high pin count locks with opposing pin stacks, and a nice roll up case.
@LockNoob4 жыл бұрын
The black flag set is fine, though I hear people have had issues with them. The tension tools were fantastic in them. I hope they make a new improves set though

Great video as usual - always interesting Got a set of the Honest picks but in a roll up canvas style carry pack a while ago but not used them yet How would you improve them - they seem very square on the shafts - not got a vice but do have dremel type tool - any other tools recommended Would you modify the tips as well Not sure how you would use the diamond shaped tip picks Sorry for asking so many questions

I would imagine that the bottom spinning is so that if it's resting on your hand, you're not scraping your hand with the handle when rotating the picks.

Love my Honest Dong Shi! Finishing them and getting them to proper dimensions is a real pain and almost not worth it. BUT, the handles are what I like most. Peterson pen picks fit right in. Also, since I'm a pick maker, I can make ANY profile pen pick tip without having to make the the handles :) Downside of these handles though, they need a sort of marker to show which way is up.

The function of the rotating rear barrel, is so that the picker can rotate the pick, without abrading his hand where the end rests. So the handle still provides support, but end remains rotationally stationary.😁♥️💪

Another really good balanced review. I agree the case looks very good and pactical too. I can see the Huk finish is better than the Honest Dong Shi set which is a good bonus. Imagine someone not knowing and trying to pick with the Honest Doing set out of the box : / At least the Huk set has a good enough finish to pick straight away with. Having said that I wouldn't trade the Honest Dong set for the Huk picks.

I haven't really went into the dimple world yet, but would it not be much more cost efficient to get a set of Dong (??) or some other very cheap chinese set. Get all the good multipick tips and simply place the MP tips on the Dongs? i guess they might not fit perfectly but that would just be a matter of adding another setscrew for extra stability. Happy new years, and good review overall
@LockNoob4 жыл бұрын
Good point - multipick tips in the honest handles would be good, but you would need some kind of adapter for them

You really need to spend time on the Honest set to make it usable. Out of the box, my half diamond was a far better choice for dimple locks. Since I didn’t have sand paper and didn’t want to dedicate time to this task, I bought the black flags from Sparrows a few days later. And then the Multipick set a couple of months later. If you have the budget, I would recommend to skip intermediate steps and go straight to Multipick. It is really a class apart and I have never regretted the investment.

The Multipick and SpooXe sets are perfect, but expensive. The metal in the Huk, Goso and Honest sets are perfectly good though, If you have the time!
