The funny thing about Hogan's heel turn in 1996 is that in all-company-encompassing-kayfabe he'd been dickish/heelish for *years* but there was a time when he was too over for it to translate to actually turning him heel. But *once* it was time to turn him heel, it all made perfect sense.

Hogan was such a d*** here. Sid legit eliminated him from the Rumble completely within the rules. And Hogan threw a hissy fit and helped eliminate fellow babyface Sid so heel Ric Flair would win the Rumble and the WWF Title. How was Sid the bad guy here exactly?

Yup. People (rightfully) talk about the steroid scandal, and fans growing tired of Hogan's shtick for reasons why his popularity declined in the early 90s, but simply put, the booking just made him out to be a heel with the Rumble '92 hissy fit only being topped by the one he threw after Savage won the World War 3 BR in '95.

That Rumble was amazing. Hogan/Sid at Mania was a dud, but Sids build was amazing. As a kid he seemed really scary and violent!

Sid snuck up on Hogan like a thief in the night. It was a heel move. They did the same spot at the WM2 battle royale with Big John Studd and William Perry and "the Fridge" got a massive pop for pulling Studd out from outside of the ring.

When you look back at the Hogan era in kayfabe, no babyface in history deserved to be betrayed more than Hulk Hogan. Paul Orndorff: Hogan wasn’t being a good nor loyal friend to him. Ignored his calls. Andre The Giant: Took him for granted and wouldn’t give his friend a title shot. Randy Savage: Still don’t know how he was the good guy in this feud. Hogan was creeping around Elizabeth and his behavior was honestly terrible. Sid: Hogan was jealous and being petty. Hogan in kayfabe had those heel turns honestly coming.

Agree! And typhoon. Hulk elim his friend, Tugboat at rumble 91 and when Tugboat returned the favor just 3 months later at april 91 SNME 20 man battle royal hulk got angry.

It was the dumbest storyline ever. I get Sid really wanted to turn heel and asked Vince to let him. But at The Royal Rumble, Gorilla says the entire show that it's every man for himself. Sid outsmarts Hogan, eliminates him....because it's EVERY MAN FOR HIMSELF, and suddenly Gorilla acts like Sid was supposed to help Hogan eliminate everyone else, and then eliminate himself to be a good friend to Hulk Hogan. The crowd popped huge when Sid threw Hogan out. Then they had that silly press conference. And even though Sid was cheated illegally by Hogan, and Hogan was eliminated by Sid legally, they gave Hogan the title shot......then sold Sid as the heel for being pissed about it. None of it made any sense. The fans didn't buy it either. That's why they put Harvey Whippleman with Sid, even though that pairing made zero sense either. Sid couldn't get heat as a heel, and fans were turning against Hogan. The only way Sid could get heat at all is for Harvey to annoy the fans enough to get them to boo some. And despite the fact that fans make fun of Brutus Beefcake today, honestly he was a big part of helping to finally get Sid some heat too. Because at that point fans still did love Brutus' character and The Barber Shop segment. Especially after he came back from that horrible accident that almost killed him. Sid threating to beat him up, and trashing the Barber Shop set was pretty good stuff.
