@@marengtech313 this is Hull we’re talking about. The word bred was banned in 1977 due to the connotations with the shallow gene pool that was thought to originate in the Gypsyville part of the city. Thankfully since the bridge was opened in 1981, it meant the people of Hull Hessle could now travel further and make more genetically wise choices 😂

I'm Canadian, and I love visiting over there. Our train service is almost non-existent. I remember one time, maybe in York, I asked an employee how to get to a certain platform to catch a certain train. He told me I'd better hurry, because the train was due any minute. So I ran to catch it, only to see it pulling out. I was so disappointed, and wondered how long I would have to wait, when a man told me "Don't worry. There'll be another one in seven minutes." I've always been impressed with the rail and bus service over there.

Northern folk are always very chatty and friendly, and have a warmth about them that so often seems lacking here in the South (where I come from). They'll happily strike up a conversation with a total stranger. But I must admit I find it rather irritating when one is travelling or trying to work on the train (perhaps that's to do with my 'Southern reserve'). Not as bad though as listening to one end of mobile phone conversations incessantly on a train journey. I wonder if Hull Trains still have a 'Quiet' carriage in standard class.

LNER operated 1 train a day to hull, this was the soul reason hull trains was formed because hull didn't get enough service and GNER (the LNER of the time) refused to up it, so Hull trains was formed

Another train averaging around four passengers per car. You'll look back on these days with amazement when the trains are crowded again. The lights were bright but looked cheery with that wet, grey day outside.

The Wairarapa Line...100km/95mins from Wellington to Masterton runs mainly Mk2e carriages...lovely new blue moquette ( att.n Vicky) power points for every seat and lovely bright indirect ceiling lighting plus personal loghts....and an 8 km tunnel between regions

Regarding about not able to switch power at speed, The ECML overhead lines were built in the early 80's so it wasn't designed for as such. Unlike GWML/HS1 and propably any other line thats been recently upgraded/installed new overhead wires thats able to handle raising/lowering pantograph at high speed.

Not true I'm afraid - Azuma trains do it at (admittedly lower) speed when diverting via the WCML at both Newcastle and Carlisle, to raise/lower as required. My suggestion would be that Hull Trains weren't involved in the project to install the balises needed to make it happen

@@pbsimons1 The question would be, do LNER do it on their one train a day to/from Hull, or do they do it while stationary at Doncaster as well? That might give us a clue whether it's the operator or the infrastructure!

@@pbsimons1 You are right that they can do it at low speed, Even class 377/376/92 can do it between willesden junction and shepherds bush, but im talking about at high speed and older designed OHL cannot cope that. Eletrification is being extended from York to Church Fenton (for now) to allow TPE 802's to switch power at speed as a prime example.

Not sure if the Class 755's use the same technology as these but on Greater Anglia they are only allowed to change power source when stationary. There are reminder boards similar to the car stop markers on the lamp posts that tell the driver which traction supply to switch to at the relevant time. It may be the rules that the power has to be changed whilst stationary for some reason?

I've travelled a few times this year between Grantham and Kings Cross and have always been impressed by Hull Trains which would be my preferred option over LNER. I found the train staff on Hull Trains really made an effort to be courteous and helpful and felt my custom was valued. This is not intended as any criticism of LNER but I rated Hull higher on my journies.

Not sure the camera would hold still long enough. Love the RH&DR to bits, but the train carriages do rattle a lot due to lack of decent suspension. And they'd certainly be no toilet inspection!

Great video again, Dylan. Good to see my home city of Hull featured. Hull Trains suffered a lot with the pandemic hitting services. Hopefully it can thrive in the future. It's ideal to be able to get to London direct (a couple of early services a day start at the lovely market town of Beverley). Much better than having to take a Northern service to Doncaster then change to London there.

Personally I rather like the livery. Beats the LNER one in my opinion which is a little bit dull. I often try to catch a Paragon to Hull when commuting to and from there since a direct journey is nice.

A great TOC with excellent drivers and passenger hosts. Lets wish them every success now the old class 180's are gone and the brakes get taken off traveling. It would be nice to see them become a little bit bigger and open a Hull - Cornwall service since Cross Country dont want to know us. You need to say Hi to us instead of the signature wave in the bog mirror.

This train looks almost identical to the "Javelin" trains from next door station St Pancras into Kent, except that they travel at 140mph on the track down to Ashford (share the line with the even faster Eurostar trains). These trains run 6 car units, often coupled into a 12 car service, they are 2nd class only and in the rush hour standing room only (used to be before COVID anyway!). These were introduced shortly before London 2012 Olympics and they were used to provide a 7 minute journey time shuttle service between St Pancras and Stratford Intl station next to the Olympic park.(not to be confused with the other Stratford station). These trains are also dual running, as at Ashford (or Ebbsfleet if leaving the HS1 track) the power switches from overhead to 3rd rail like the rest of the southern / southeastern rail service. These trains alse provide a loop service from St Pancras via Ashford past the Dartford bidge to Folkestone, along the seafront & Samphire Hoe to Dover, then on to Deal, Sandwich, Ramsgate, Broadstairs, Margate and Medway towns back to St Pancras without changing trains. Although I like the speed of the Javelin service the slower & cheaper trains into Charing Cross / Victoria have more confortable seats.

Great review as always Dylan, thanks. We've used Hull Trains a number of times in the past but have yet to try the new 'Paragon' trains. Reports I've seen on them seem rather mixed, so it was good to see a positive one. The lack of decent catering for both first and standard class passengers is, IMHO, a great shame, and what they and other companies in the UK offer is not good compared with so many rail companies in mainland Europe. I used to travel on business quite regularly from the South to destinations in England and Scotland in the 1980s and 1990s and you could get a really good meal onboard most long-distance services in dedicated restaurant cars available to all passengers.

The 810 looks different but the others are meant to look the same. They're all built from the same bodyshells because they're the same family of trains. Also keeps maintenance costs down.

@@DaveDVideoMaker it's because like a post above about the ' javelin train' they ' some ' of them, eg HT, TPE Easy Coast and soon EMT , all use the ' AT300 ' model, the rest are a slightly different larger length design . The class 395's only difference is the door position , no sealed off areas so you get a blast of cold air in winter when the doors open , but it's been written that these units are to be cascaded further north , maybe Scotland or ' Northern ', along with it also stated with all the rail ' shake up ' many new fleets , may well get moved around . Worst hit will be ' GA ' where it replaced almost all of its stock now, that stock is destined to be cascaded , they may end up with different trains, Hitachi bi.modes etc. But back to Hitachi , the AT300 is shorter than the LNER Azuma and original GNER 800, which I still think is the best livery . However east Midlands train's are getting totally redisigned seats, to counter the regular complaints on all the other units . Also LNER have interestingly in the latest rail publication, announced an order for 25 more 125mph ' intercity trains ' , by all accounts not yet designed. But following issues with the Hitachi stock ( the cracks debacle ) plus the issues they had with ' interference with lineside kit . They have yet to select a supplier . But that HT 80X I honestly thought first class looked so cheap , that it was second class . And the copying of the ' intercity ' idea of showing local sights and places on its rolling stock, looks awful on the Hitachi. Still the images of the javelin based ' EMT ' , ' Aurora's ' look amazing . However they still cannot beat a HST !. Final thing, I really wish Dylan would quit running down the train , talk about ' flashing images warning ' made me dizzy watching him run through it with no thought for how the video looks, far too much faffing with everything , honestly the worst is the toilet obsession , every flipping film, he's in there quick smart . What those of us interested not sure if other rail enthusiasts agree but being able to see it leave each station, to see how fast it moves away , say between diesel mode and electric . Plus more outside views , as it gives an idea again what it's like to take a journey on such a train. He really needs to stop the fiddling and give more quality and substance , also a few facts about each train , plus rating each operator would not go amis. And finally will he ever bloody sit still ?

...another boffo offering, Dylan!!... ...like you, I am very partial to the classic barrel roofed terminals...they provide a nice, dry environment for boarding (welcomed, I'm sure on your rainy travel day)... ...as to the livery...you Brits are spoiled for choice ( we Yanks have only the uninspired and boring Amtrak)...IMHO, the blue color is beautiful; and the fact that Hull Trains is one of the rapidly vanishing regional lines, it's only natural that they should visualize their historic connections to the communities they serve... ...to me, this is an uber-deluxe train (though Amtrak is due to get some upgraded trains shortly)... ...as someone who can't wait to ride the UK trains, again (my familial roots are in Wiltshire...near Bath..)...could you kindly note the quoted fares for First and Coach seats on your trips?...always good to br able to compare the relative value for money... ...and for true rail fans, along with those of us foreigners considering extensive travel, could you also post links to BritRail Travel Pass?... ...thanks, again, Dylan ...and if you ever find yourself in Denver, let me know...a stunning Amtrak route takes you over the Continental Divide through a deep redrock Glenwood Canyon to the historic Hotel Colorado, with the world's largest outdoor pool fed by hot springs...( in Autumn, the aspens are in a riotous display of oranges and reds)

4:16 I havant tried the first class seats on any of the 80x trains but the standard class seats are a bit of a raw deal. 7:03 Selby used to be on the East Coast mainline. The ECML that we know and love today has changed over time. The construction of the Selby Diversion meant that Selby is no longer on the ECML.

Everytime I travel to East Midlands, I sometimes take the LNER and Hull trains just for the new class 800s. The extra 10-20 minutes for the change at Grantham is worth it if I'm not in a rush.

I think there should really be an hourly service from Hull considering how big Hull is and that LNER has like 2 a day. Also maybe even one or two to Scarborough as a couple already go to Beverley...

Not that it's relevant but P&O ferries pre covid did a nice "mini cruise" from Hull to Bruges. It's not a cruise but is cheap and worthwhile... On the video, does Dylan always reference Arsenal on route to/from Kings Cross.....Very similar in Leeds🤔.... I'm now wanting a video doing the match day train to Manchester United! 😉😊

Nice video as always. A non-train comment, you mention the (dated) Prospect Centre is not far away, but fail to mention the modern St Stephen's shopping development is also alongside the Interchange and I'd say that is much more appealing!

Up where I am I see 802s, but they are the GWR ones, personally, I dislike these trains, manly because I find them uncomfortable, still amazing video

I think the 801s that go to york er uncomfortable but the ones that go to Scotland is comfortable so get the longer distants trains

They may not be as comfortable as the HSTs and Mk4s, but they are a heck of a sight better than the Adelantes that we had on Hull Trains for too many years!

That Northern 170476 used to be an SPT then First/Abellio Scotrail unit before being transferred down south a few years ago. Units from 170460 to 170478 excluding 170470 and I think 170471 have been transferred.

Thank you very much for this most enjoyable video ! I have not travelled on Hull Trains IETs yet, but note that as a First Group Company, the seats are virtually the same as those in the TPE 802s, and GWR Class 800s ! For me they are a very poor substitute on GWR for the Mark III stock on the HSTs that the 800s replaced. Also, as you say, these 802s are "relatively" good in their riding capabilities, but frankly that is not good enough ! They should be better in every respect, and certainly are no match for any D.B. ICE, or SNCF TGV ! As for the Hull Trains livery, I agree it is nice to feature the places that are served, but it really does look tacky, and as for the red hearts - oh no ! Many thanks for your efforts.

Nice video. However I would disagree on the seats and comfort on those IET/Azuma/Nova 1/Paragons. The seats are hard even in first class, and ride are bumpy at high speed, so bumpy that those divider doors rattle throughout the journey.

Actually, the smallest train operator is Pre-Metro Operations who run the rail service between Stourbridge Junction and Stourbridge Town on behalf of West Midlands Railways. They have just two trains which operate the service alternate weeks. The distance is just 0.6 miles and the trains run every 10 minutes. Earlier this year Network Rail replaced most of the track on the line.

Sometimes in wet weather the train driver has to stop the train before the phantograph can be released.normaly at a railway station.but if the whole route is electric using the phantograph system the phantograph stays up.In a large area of southeast London the electric trains run on the third rail system

Hull trains Class 802’s are the only type of 80x trains I haven’t been on yet, as I’ve never travelled with Hull Trains in my life. I’ll get to go on one some day. Nice video

11:20 Those Class 717 Thameslink services are restricted to the slow lines, which is limited to about 120km/h. The fast lines are rated for 200km/h :). 11:27 oh no, you must have had a caution signal to enable the Thameslink to pass again.

I like the livery. First has nearly always added that slash of colour that I think we've sometimes needed. I've had a few opportunities to use HT when travelling London to Nottingham via Grantham but with so many seats always taken pre-Covid, I've always opted for LNER/its predecessors. I'll get it one day.

Excellent report Dylan on this company whom I hadn’t really considered before but thinking I might do the trip now - maybe northwards. ‘Proper’ catering makes a big difference to whether I’ll go first class or not and I’m sure I’m not the only one who thinks like that. I wish toc’s would understand this!?! As for the livery, externally I think it’s more suited to a suburban train tbh and the interior well it’s quite similar to GWR isn’t it apart from the colours. Nice one!
