'Hullabaloo' Effects Animation: Tone Mattes

Here is a video describing the creation and use of "tone mattes" which are hilites or shadows created to enhance the the characters in order to create a dramatic look and feel to the scene when telling out stories.

I think this is why so many things look cheap like the direct to video Disney sequels. I'd almost rather no tone mattes personally. Looney tuned kept things generally flat and it worked fine.

Ok I've only discovered this project like 10 minutes ago (because of my deep dive into traditional hand drawn animation) and this is the second hand draw animation project I've found. I'm super excited to see the end result and am glad this medium of animation is still alive :-)

You might want to go a little less heavy on the blur on those tone mattes. It usually looks better with very little blur, especially on nice graphic character designs like yours . Currently it makes them feel like those 1990's Airbrushed Disney VHS cassette covers. The other thing is that by just comping the black shadow over the character layer at a percentage you get a muddy look. An approach we used to do when I was comping, was that there would be a shadow version of the character colors. You would have the normal character color layer and then use the shadow matte to reveal the shadow colors in a copy of the character painted with the shadow color. Nowadays. you could probably use a color correction node to do that for the shadow layer. it just gives a richer shadow, plus you can adjust the shadow color depending on the scene lighting.

@@BrianKollig that was when it was originally going to be one short with stock music, they ended up doing a lot more than originally planned and actually could afford to make original music with a live orchestra. That's why it took much longer than originally anticipated.
