Hults Bruk Kalix felling axe: a small axe that chops very well

The Hult Bruk Kalix felling axe is a light axe. At 2 1/4 pounds with a 28 inch it would be called a boy’s axe normally. I think that is a gross mischaracterization of an axe that chops much more effectively than it’s size would suggest.

That thing looks great, the dimensions are nice, the handle to head size ratio is the size I like for a pack axe. I recently restored an old Plumb axe, and that thing is sweet, I admit I am an axe addict.

It was said that the old timer loggers would "rest on the axe". The saw is faster for large trees, but there is no way one could work it all day because they require a lot more physical output. So they would put a few men on the saws and a few men on the axes, from what I was told it was usually 2 men on the axe for every man on the saw. That way you would "rest" twice as long as you worked. When the saw guys got winded, the axe guys would swap out with them and they would go "rest on the axe." My great grandfather and grandfather were loggers for a time in Virginia...back when they still did it by hand tool and mule team. Imagine being so tuff that using an axe was restful! lol

It's the geometry of the handle is what makes it hit so hard.

Nice axe, RM. If someone wants a good boys axe, the Cold Steel Trail Boss is pretty good for about $33. The Collins is a good choice too, I have one that needs rehung when I find a good handle.

@@TheRevoltingMan I once bought an axe at TSC just to see if I could sharpen it and make it usable, nope, it could not even take an edge, the metal seemed very soft. I would never suggest getting one.

All axe handles, of our grandfather and back in time, where thin. Some so thin, like on hatchets, that literally looked like thin flat boards. Axe market, was completely destroed, when machines took over around 1940.Until then all axes had proper handles. The reasons they now do them thick, or more properly said, leave them thick, are 1 : People don't use axes for living, actually they barely use them both in hours of use and because not many know how to use the, Many think they know, but that's just ego and too much movies they've watched. Reason 2 Leaving the handle and the head thicker, companies reduces production cost a lot! It also makes production faster. So it's a win win for them, means they make a lot more money... Anybody, who really uses axes, they know how an axe handle should be and they also know, the history on the axe, thus both how it used to be, and why they don't make them like they used too.. It's the same with everything, they don't make them, like they used too! From movies and axes, to cars and washing machines...
