Nice clean face cut. Good for you for posting this. People need to see real life situations. I’ve had this happen to me once as well when I tried to fell a hard leaner only using an axe.

I have a number of high end axes. I must admit that the Council Tool Jersey Sport Utility is one of the best axes for the money you can find.

There is the first log for the cabin! By the end of a day you would have enough for a third say of what you need. A man with a knife can survive, but a man with an axe can live like a king!

that jersey really ate through the wood super fast! the montreal patterns are like hudson bay patterns, a little tippy in the blade but excellent for working in spruce and pine, mostly for limbing and clearing trails I find. I prefer the montreal pattern to the Hudson bay because it has a bigger poll area, more contact with the handle. the Hudson bays always seem to end up with a loose head. just not enough handle purchase for the forces at play.

Could not agree more about Hudson Bay patterns. I wish they were better than they are because they are pretty cool looking but there just isn't enough contact with the shallow eye.

Looks almost as of your hinge was compromised due to the wood being dead and starting to decompose and not having much fibers. I've had leaners fall on my back cut before, which is why I tend to get some bull rope and run a tag line with some tension on a cable puller now. The important thing is, you're safe, the tree is on the ground, and you've got some firewood!

Perfect clean chop! It's so hard to find that Jersey axe in Canada under $270 plus a million dollars in tax import delivery fees and proof that you are not a Yeti.

Fuck yea Ben! That was super clean even though you cut your back cut a little high. It was actually a really good demonstration of what can go wrong, happy accident :). I gotta say, you excelled at axemanship faster than most of the people I know. I’m glad you got a chance to upload this. I had been looking foreword to it for a while.

My Silky Katanaboy would go through that tree with 1/10th the effort.

Love the look of both of these patterns. I've never used either, both are pretty hard to find down here in Aus. Been looking at this council for a while now, might try wisemans trading though I'd expect crazy shipping. I reckon that jersey on a race handle would be fun. Thanks for honest vid

I’ve been eyeing that council tools axe which is what brought me here where did you find it for 55 if you don’t mind me asking? I’ve made up my mind I don’t typically buy newer axes no reason really just don’t but I want that one. I do have a vintage Montreal pattern HB. Still haven’t hung it yet
@bladesandbows1521 Жыл бұрын
I totally understand not buying a new axe, especially when there are so many available on "the bay🙄" for a little less. Plus, you have the ability to hang them on whatever stick you'd like to. HOWEVER, Council Tool makes absolutely AMAZING axes/hatchets (at least from what I have used/tried). As far as "mass producing" companies go, Council Tool and Snow and Nealley have awesome stuff. I actually think that Snow and Nealley axes hold a little bit better of an edge but the difference is negligible (I'm in the NE (Buffalo, NY) so I may have a geographical bias). The other leg up that CT has over S and N is the array of products.... S and N only have their 3.5, 2.25, Hudson Bay, Penobscot Bay, Mini Maul, and Outdoorsman Axe. While C.T. has a HUGE variety.... There are A LOT of smaller forges that produce like, Sevenpinesforge.com that are close in price and A LOT better as far as edge retention.... Plus I have have had the pleasure of learning from and using Ted's axes and if the apocalypse happened tomorrow I would only bring a Sevenpinesforge.com axe...

So do you like that Jersey with those phantom bevels ?
@bladesandbows15214 жыл бұрын
I absolutely love it. It releases really really well and the handle is actually awesome. It's obviously not their Velvicut line but the handle is thin and great. Excellent price. I have yet to be disappointed with a council tool product.

@@bladesandbows1521 thanks! I own the pack axes and camp carver, great axes. Is this CT you are swinging the 32" version?

You would have better porfomenc and control with the Agdor if you spent some time thinning out the handle, they come way too fat I couldn't believe how fat mine was. Spend a little thinning it out so it fits your hands better and reprofile the edge and you'll see a big difference.
@cosmicbilly3 жыл бұрын
Exactly. I got the 2.5 Montreal and thinned the handle wayyy down and gave it a 17 degree flat grind. Personally it performs better than the heavier 3.5lb axes ive used. The extra lb doesn't make much a difference for me. Also theres alot more eye room than Hudson bay axes. Never had a problem with mine coming loose.

Hey guys this is not a stock handle. It's the 31" "Dave Canterbury" American Felling axe handle.... essentially this is the same exact axe.... it is just a touch thick but overall not to bad.
@cosmicbilly3 жыл бұрын
@@bladesandbows1521 i was blown away by how thick HB handles are... once i tuned my handle on my HB Montreal, it became a whole other tool. Its by far my favorite coppicing axe.
