The difference between Amanda's performance and Elizabeth's is that Amanda is playing a character who the audience knows is a psychopath, but is trying to put on a performance of a kind and trust-worthy person, while Elizabeth is actually playing a kind and trust-worthy character, who the audience doesn't know is actually a psychopath.

YES thank you. Its a dive inside her mind, (although irl if her being a sociopath is true, there isn't nearly as much emotional conflict in her as they showed in the series). if she just did what we all saw then it wouldn't be any different than just watching holmes' life unravel irl

I think Amanda made a few necessary changes to make it more 'cinematic'. The longer pauses and extra shaking is for the tension. Movies are always a bit exaggerated, and they need to be. Otherwise, it might as well be a documentary. I'm sure Amanda was instructed to be a bit more dramatic, and she did a phenomenal job.

Also, I think the reason why Amanda didn't copy everything about Elizabeth's behavior, is because it would look cringy and carricature-ish. That's why actors make changes and don't copy the person they are portraying too much

It makes sense, yeah. Cinema is attempting to capture the feeling that real life often subdues. Amanda’s performance really increased the anxiety. I can feel like if I was in Holmes’ position, I would actually be miserable.

I just finished the show with Amanda Seyfried. And I feel like in a few ways the TV show was actually LESS dramatic than real life!?! I notice that Elizabeth's real hair in interviews is more disheveled looking than Amanda's, also I feel like Amanda didn't lower her voice to the same unnatural deepness that Elizabeth did. It's a strange situation of life being weirder than fiction.

The difference between Holmes and Seyfried's portrayal is by the time The Dropout aired we were all in on the "gag" as it were. Playing Holmes strictly as herself would have actually made for a dull series, Amanda injected enough knowing into her portrayal to keep it grounded in reality but with that knowing wink to the audience that says "we all know how this ends, right?" Seyfried was just phenomenal in this role. I actually felt a little sorry for Holmes.

Reminds me of how Ed Kemper was portrayed in Mindhunter. Based on available footage of him, the real life Ed Kemper seemed like a genuinely nice and ordinary guy. Kinda terrifying considering what he did. The actor who played him, although he did a phenomenal job, played a much creepier version. Something about his performance was just unsettling. This is just how it goes in dramatization of real events, as can also be seen in Amanda's portrayal of Holmes. Reality is heightened just a little.

Amanda Seyfried nods and shakes her head too much. Holmes is very steady compared to Seyfried. My guess is that Seyfried might be doing this to make Holmes appear as though she is always searching for the answer. Seyfried hesitated way too long compared to Holmes when Holmes replied she didn't have very many secrets. When I look at Seyfried's performance she comes across unsure of what to say next. When I look at Holmes, she comes across as Dustin Hoffman Rain Man.

Amanda Seyfried isn't actually a nerd con artist with psychopathy. So, generally, Seyfried's face is more expressive and alive. Elizabeth does shake somewhat during the Bill Clinton interview and the white-background promo at the end, so it's not out of nowhere. But Elizabeth's shaking comes across as nervousness. Amanda exaggerates it a lot, and I agree she's doing it to reasons you said. It's funny you mentioned Rain Man, as I have a theory that Elizabeth has high functioning autism (formerly aspergers). It came across in the Charlie Rose interview the most...the way Elizabeth looks down like that and talks in such a deliberate way. That's not her searching for answers/lies like Amanda's portraying...that's her actually trying to recall what she wants to say and kind of force the words to come out. She has to look down because eye contact will ruin this whole process...classic autism symptom, among other signs I've noticed.

I stumbled onto this without diving too deep in the trailers. During episode 1,2 and 3 i was rooting for Elizabeth because the entrepreneurial spirit it takes to overcome obstacles. About 4 episodes in i started hating this woman with every fiber in me. By the time she changed her voice to be more "deep" i was about to pull my hair out. Can you imagine the bone chilling shock i got at the end of episode 8 when they started listing the real-life case updates, it was literally just then that i realized this was a real life event. I am young and not from the US, so i never heard of Theranos or the real Elizabeth. This is insane on a level unimaginable. Elizabeth, you are a disgrace to all Women, Humanity and the entire Entrepreneur Society. The fact that even after all this, you can remain cool about your crimes proves you are a psychopathic monster with alien eyes, a demons hart and an insufferable pretentious voice. I hope justice prevails in honor of all lives lost, families ruined financially or in health. F YOU!

But the whole point was that elizabeth was manually manipulating her vocal folds to lower her voice. Allegedly she believed it made her more trust worthy and believable. There are clips of her natural voice and it’s much higher.

I didn't like her portrayal of E.H. Amanda is a great actress, don't get me wrong. But I agree with others that she was playing a psychopath instead of a person appearing to be a "genius". I'm only able to base my opinion on the small amount of comparison shown, however, it appears that neither a body language expert nor a linguist were on set. Elizabeth used a very exaggerated and poorly executed deep voice when she spoke as well as unnatural, fabricated facial expressions. Such as extended durations without blinking and limited facial movement. These were all a part of her manipulation and attempt to control her environment. Although these idiosyncrasies often naturally occur in people with antisocial personality disorders, like her idol Steve Jobs, hers were rehearsed. I wish Amanda would have done a better job of focusing on these mannerisms. It would have made her portrayal much more believable. * Sorry for the novel I wrote and thank you to those who read it in its entirety. I spared you the analysis of her body language, in part because I couldn't get enough detail from the short amount of video shown.

Honestly this Elizabeth person looks like someone with zero credibility. I mean it's literally there on her face, in her mannerisms. Right there. So when someone says that they don't like a particular person because of how they look and talk, it doesn't always mean that they are being judgemental or mean. It sometimes means that they can just see through the garb.

I read most of Carreyrou's book and watched The Dropout and think that both Elizabeth and Sunni were painted in a far kinder light in The Dropout than either of them were worthy of. I believe I had a narrow escape with Theranos - back in 2012 I was working for a company that was going to be contracted for a British subsidiary of Walgreens who were opening diagnostics sections in their stores, I had to sign an NDA but never discovered the company I was going to be working for. I believe it was Theranos and the contract never came to fruition.
