I've heard a few people play as well, but not many. Of course I lived in Yunnan, where these originate, they became popular all over China in the last 15 years or so, but they were originally special to the Dai nationality. The Dai people mostly live in Yunnan (there are two main branches the Water dai and the Earth Dai, if memory serves, the Water Dai pretty much lived entirely in Yunnan, where as the Earth Dai occasionally moved around, so there are some in other provinces.

That was beautiful. It's like a mini-bagpipe, except much more mellow. I have to wonder how this would sound applied to traditional Irish and Scottish music for some Chinese-Irish and Chinese-Scottish Fusion music potential :).

Tristan Mercer Eric Mercer Do you see the metal things covering the two side pipes? When uncovered, the undertone is produced through the side pipes. At least that's how it worked on my street shop 葫芦丝, it seems like the performer here has an even fancier one :) but that is the general concept I think.

hello, I'm playing this instrument as well, and my teacher told me normally we just need to swing it after using coz there's lots of humidity, and around every month, remove the pipe, and wash with soup liquid and dry it, everytime after using it, put it upside down, so the humidity can dry out, hope it can help you. Enojoy playing it!

@@keremkaragoz how do you disrespect an instrument? To be able to make its sound your own is the greatest honour and mastery there is. Limiting people to how something is 'meant to be played' only makes their playing dishonest.
