WRONG! Keeping your dog on a leash is NOT a human habit that Dogs hate. They only love to see the leash because it means you're taking them for a walk. If given the choice, they would certainly prefer to escape the leash since it limits their mobility.

Yes to keeping your dog on leash! Thank you for giving that example. I can’t tell you how many times dogs have come running up to my dog while their owner yells, “she’s friendly” from a mile away. I always yell back, “Mine’s not!” The problem is that I rescued my dog from a horribly abusive situation and even though his behavior has improved (with lots of work), he’s absolutely terrified and will bite at an unknown dog that comes running toward him just to get the dog to back off. Somehow, I end up looking like the bad owner. Plus, incidents like that just make him even more terrified and set him 10 steps back in his training.

I firmly believe that the reason I was blessed to have my Snickers, a beautiful Husky, reach the age of 18, was that his weight stayed between 50-55 lbs his entire life. We lost him this past December and even though I know 18 was a long time, I wish I could have him back even for just 1 more day. I think I’ll miss him til the end of my days. And hey, if you can’t afford more expensive dog food, make them a food topper. I cook chicken livers, sometimes beef livers and whatever other organ meats I can find for them along with bone broth, fruits and vegetables. I don’t cook every day but with 8 dogs, I probably do it at least twice a week. Also, Snickers used to love Caesar salad and taco salad. Anytime you can give dogs extra healthy food, it makes them happy and you’re improving their longevity. Just look up any food items that you might not be sure that it’s safe for dogs.

Sometimes a dog walks kind of frantically with it's nose on the floor as though he/she is trying to find grass to eat. When the dog does that he/she is sick and if let outside the dog will eat grass. The dog may vomit after eating the grass, and usually seems to feel better after vomiting. I have witnessed this behavior more than once with multiple dogs.

Just for the record. Professional training isn't required for it to be a service dog. All that is necessary is for it to be trained to perform a task for you in the event that you aren't able to do it. It's federally regulated that way. They cannot demand you to demonstrate it or about the owners conditions. They can, however, ask what task it is trained to do. Service dog vests aren't required, nor any formal paperwork, at least at the federal level (some states may have imposed it though). It is important to distinct a service dog from an emotional support dog though. They are very different and handled different legally.

The whole "dogs need scheduled eating times" I think is largely old thinking that many new resources don't say is necessary anymore. The only reason we started taking the bowl away in the late evening is because our dog can be a bit picky and if he's recently gotten some better food he'll start holding out on eating his regular food until he gives in to hunger. The problem is sometimes that's like 1 AM....which isn't a feeding time I want him to get used to so we take the bowl away to enforce that he should be eating his food before sleep time. Available food doesn't create overfeeding if you simply don't provide them more food than you're supposed to. Just keep a mental count of how many scoops of food you've given the dog. After about a week it pretty much just becomes routine. Also weigh them once in a while to check that their weight is healthy. Honestly, the best advice I've heard is a healthy dog probably looks slightly skinny to what you expect the dog "should" look like because of how common low exercise/overfed dogs are. It's honestly the same about humans, the whole getting to a healthy weight and your family being concerned that you're starving yourself or something. People's perceptions of a healthy weight are completely skewed.

The whole 'more exercise' thing is all very well, but when you have a small ex-breeder rescue dog who becomes aggressive around any other dog it sees (so any and all dog parks are out), who has no idea how to play, doesn't know how to fetch and basically can't 'dog', it makes it difficult.

I have almost the exact situation with my dog. One thing that has really helped is that my friend also has a small dog and slowly, my dog (who seems to show agression because she feels she must protect me) came to accept both my friend & my friend's dog. The dogs are now great friends and play together. We set up play dates - I enjoy my firend's company and the dogs have a great time. Finding one other dog for your dog to connect with on a regular basis might help.

Try stroking firmly from the base of neck all the way down tail , and massage the dogs head .also all of its appropriate body feet and all . And another calming technique is gentley but firmly squeeze the dog .apparently it reminds them subconsciously of being in the womb. They do this with abused greyhounds. Give your dog a stroke from me.

Being off leash is not illegal everywhere. I'm in Virginia and the leash laws read like this - your dog must be on a leash, OR, under your direct vocal control. If my dog is trained well enough to be off leash and obey my commands, I legally do not need a leash. That other dog may have been friendly on the leash, but dogs are 99% wolf by DNA, and you don't see wolves roaming around looking to visit other packs. This will get a wolf killed quickly, and that DNA is still present and strong in pet dogs. If the dog on leash was anxious in any way, it had the fight or flight options available. Being on a leash removes the option for flight, so that leaves the FIGHT mode as the other option. Dogs meeting like this may go OK, but there's a good chance the dogs may end up fighting, especially if the owners do not know the signs to look for leading up to a dog fight. For example, if two dogs meet and they have their mouths closed, most people wouldn't think twice, but that is one thing to look for. If their mouths are closed, they are more tense, and a dog fight is immanent. Those dogs should not have met like that. The owner of the off leash dog should have recalled the dog to a safe place, preferably to a heel position, or a down/stay until the other dog was gone. The guy with the dog on the leash should have put himself between the two dogs. 99.999% of the time when a dog comes up to you with your dog on a leash, it is not going to mess with the human, it sees the other dog as a challenge/threat and if there is going to be a problem, it will be between the dogs, not the dog and human. Put yourself between your dog and the dog approaching. Puff up and make yourself big. If you have a walking stick, raise it up big in a threatening manner if need be. Dogs have been trained for centuries that a human with a stick or item in the hand like that is a bad thing, and they usually back off. If you don't have a stick, choke up on the leash you have and start swinging the end of the leash in circles in front of you and over head. It gives the same effect. If that doesn't work and the other dog attacks your dog, the first thing you do is drop the leash and give your dog a fair chance at defending itself. Pulling your dog back on a leash just makes your dog an easy target that cannot defend itself. Once you let go of the dog, you need to get them separated. DO NOT reach in to grab a collar. These dogs are fighting and fighting hard, and you reaching in and grabbing something on their neck will most likely cause you to get bit, even by your own dog. Since your dog has a better chance of obeying you, get behind the other dog and grab both back legs, and pick the back legs up like a wheelbarrow. Lift high enough that the dog won't be able to spin and bite you. There, that dog is now not a threat, and will most likely not want to continue fighting your dog in that vulnerable position. Now you just have to get control of your dog until the other owner gets control of their dog.

I punish dogs and cats in a very specific way: I cut their ears off with my "natural" (index and middle finger) scissors. Dogs and cats love this. Strangely, my index and middle finger scissors are not sharp at all. Rather than cause pain, my (ahem) "scissors" just seem to feel good to them. Oh, wait. You mean reprimanding punishment, didn't you? No, that's just plain stupid human behavior that never works as intended.

Jumping is an easy problem to fix if you are trained adequately with an e-collar. If done correctly it can be fixed in 3-5 corrections, if timed properly and the human knows how to do it right. This guy's an idiot. If you're going to have 20 people over during the month, or UPS drivers, pizza delivery, etc., do you really think it's good to try and train every single one of them how to treat your dog so it doesn't jump on you? When you go on a walk or out to socialize your dog, are you going to have a discussion with each person so they know how your dog will act and warn them about jumping? Every time a person comes over, are you going to tell them to just keep waiting while you put your dog in a crate or put them in a room behind a closed door where their anxiety or being very excited will cause them to possibly chew or destroy items? What if the person your dog is elderly and they fall over and break a bone. That's 3-6 months of healing and physical therapy because your dog wasn't properly trained not to jump on people when they are a puppy. People get a puppy and it's so cute, and when it jumps up on your leg for attention, you love on it and encourage that jumping interaction for months and months. Then the dog grows and that jumping you allowed your dog to know was acceptable and encouraged, is suddenly unwanted. Guess what. You've trained the dog through thousands of reps that it is OK, so it's become habituated. You're trying to correct an action you created, and you're frustrated with the dog because it doesn't suddenly understand something it has done all their lives is suddenly unacceptable, as fast as turning off a light switch. People don't correct their dogs problems and they do not teach them good manners, thus, the dog isn't trusted and and has limited liberties/freedoms. I'd rather rip the band-aid off, fix the issue(s) quickly when required, then go back to enjoying a life with a dog I trust so I can allow them more freedom to be happy and playful dogs. I take my dog out to Lowe's and other places to socialize her and she stays in a good heel position and walks through the store with me. I can ask her to go into a down/stay, and she'll stay there, even if I walk out of site. I fixed most of these items in one or two training sessions. Call me cruel if you want, but my dog will likely live 12-15 years. A couple of training sessions and my dog will have a much more enriched and free life for those 12-15 years than an untrained dog you have to leave at home or shut behind a door every time company comes over. If you go to KZbin under "American Standard Dog Training", you can find video after video of a master dog trainer. Any balanced dog trainer can train 90% or more of dogs to walk with manners on a leash in 5-10 minutes. My favorite video of his was a 15-20 minute video with no time edited out, and he started with a 4 YO German Shephard that was pulling this 230 pound master dog trainer down the road on a typical flat collar. Over the 15-20 minute video, he trained the dog to walk with manners on a loose leash, and at the end of the video, his 5 YO daughter was walking this same dog that 15-20 minute earlier was dragging him down the road. He has a course called "The Perfect Walk" which is included in his $19.99 monthly membership, along with weekly live training and Q&A sessions, access to previously recorded sessions, the ability to ask questions and get in depth answers from the master dog trainer himself. This is all at DIYK9.com under the monthly membership.

@@yonikki My pleasure Nikki! It makes my day when I know I have helped someone have a better life and relationship with their dogs. Sorry for the long rant above. I just get pissed when idiots post stuff as if they know about dogs when it is just click-bait, and people leave with bad information. I was watching a video from Zak George earlier today and he was making some really idiot mistakes for a dog trainer. This dog he'd never met was muzzled, and if not, he probably would have been bitten twice, because he was making idiot mistakes. He walked up on a dog that did not know him, got close into the dogs personal space, which with a tall person, is a very dominance based move to a dog. Then he put his hand on top of the dogs head and was petting him, but also pushing down on the dogs head. When one dog puts its head on top of another dogs head and pushes down, it's a dominance play, and either the dog submits, or fights back. Zak invaded this German Shepherds space, then put his hand on the dogs head, and he's surprised the dog nipped at him? I had to laugh at him. Zak likely is great at his style of dog training, but he really should have known better. Anyway, I'm glad your heading to that site. The monthly membership has changed in the past 6 months. It still has "The Perfect Walk" course, but it's $24.99 per month if it is month by month, or $16.99 if paid in for 1 year. I'm one of his moderators and I have access to 100% of his paid content, and if nothing else, The Perfect Walk is the one course I'd recommend for everybody, unless they are getting a puppy, then the puppy courses may be a better value. You'll enjoy your walks with your hound once trained. You'll have to decide how much you want to allow him to walk with his/her nose to the ground versus being engaged with you. My dog is half purebred Siberian Husky from a professional breeder, and half pureblood Treeing Walker Coonhound from next door that made an accidental love connection, so the entire litter was surrendered. So, we literally have a purebred mutt LOL. At least she has good genetics. Our dog loves to scent track anything she smells on the ground/road on walks, but it's up to you if you want to allow that or not. It can be frustrating if your dog is stopping every 15 feet and distracted by a scent, so you may want to train the dog young that is (or is not) acceptable on a walk. My dog doesn't stop and become a hassle to keep with me on a walk, so I don't really stop it, but if she was stopping a lot on walks, I'd likely train her differently. Hounds have the best noses, with the blood hound being on top I believe? Dogs have up to 50x better noses than humans, at least by math. Humans have 6 million scent receptors, where blood hounds have 300 million. I'm not good with FB, but here's the FB page for the free content. Paying members get private access and more responses from group experts, but there's plenty of good info here too if you don't want to drink the cool-aid. :0) facebook.com/groups/1524718728004324/ We moderators do keep an eye on this free page and respond when we can, but we obviously have to focus more on the paid sites. Cheers, and congratulations on your new family member! Check out this link for more info on Plott Hounsd. www.akc.org/dog-breeds/plott-hound/

actually you're wrong about free feeding. dogs only overeat when you don't have food out for them all the time b/c they make themselves eat everything they see while they see it b/c they only have a chance to eat twice a day or however many times you disturbing people that think you have the right to decide when an animal eats and that one or two times a day is enough. i leave my dogs food out all day and refill it the minute she's done and allow her to have the autonomy to eat when she's hungry. she is underweight by choice and she does not overeat because she's not retarded and understands when she's full. anyone who enslaves their pets by deciding their feeding times needs to have the same done to them.

Taking a dog to a dog park to run around? Another idiot idea. You have no idea how well behaved those random dogs are. Many may be happy-go-lucky, but all it takes is that one dog to attack and start a fight, and suddenly, that loving dog that loved going to the dog park will now see other dogs as a threat and instead of wanting to play with them, they may become reactive and bark and growl and act crazy in an attempt to scare off the other dog. This puts your dog in a fight or flight mode, and since your dog is on a leash, that flight mode is gone, so fight mode is all that is left. Have you ever looked up videos of dog fights in dog parks? Or looked up the number of dogs killed per day at dog parks? All it takes is one bad rep for your dog to learn other dogs can be a threat.

This guy only feeds his dogs with the dog treat puzzle toys every day? Another idiot statement. You should do as much training with your dog by using the kibble as a reward for training sessions. Even if you only have a few minutes, do a couple of obedience commands with kibble rewards, and then end on a high note on a great rep of your command, and give the rest of the kibble as a jackpot, or a large portion as a jackpot, and put the rest in one of these toys. If you're not training your dog, how will it learn what is acceptable and what is not acceptable? This guy is catering bad ideas to people that want a world of hugs and unicorn kisses to link items to make money. He knows how to peddle items for sale, but knows little about dogs besides what he has read on the internet posted by people that are obviously not master dog trainers.

Walk your dog on a harness and 20' leash? Another idiot statement. A harness is designed to make dogs pull. Do you ever see Siberian Huskies / sled dogs pulling sleds on a flat collar, gentle lead, slip lead, prong collar or choke chain? No, because those are not designed to encourage pulling. Walking a dog on a 6' leash on a harness means the dog will pull on a 6' leash. Expanding that out to 20' means the dog has more room to get into problems like maybe they find a chicken bone on a walk, or an animal with a disease has evactuated on the walk. You can't see what the dog is sniffing or trying to put in it's mouth on a 20' leash. Maybe another dog with roundworms or other parasites pooped up ahead. If you don't catch it and pull your dog off before they get it in their mouth, then your dog also has parasites.
