This virus may be old from 2001 but viruses mutate, that's what they do. Mutations alter the behavior of original virus, that's what the concern is about. If a mutation spreads more easily then it is a problem, so people who bring the point that this virus existed sinces 2001 it has no relevance here unless the mutations are considered. Covid also existed as SARS even before 2019, it is the covid-19 "mutation" that caused the problem.

yes they mutate and that's what it is called genetic drift. Presently also seems like it is of same nature and this time also it may go away as an outbreak (like before). In fact cases are sporadic here and there in almost every country, it's just that the testing increases and gets notified when such news and panic happens.
