One of my favorite examples of a 40k agri world is in the Lords of Silence book. There's 3/4 of a chapter dedicated to an agri world that the characters actively say "is advertised as a paradise" throughout the Imperium, but once you land, you never leave. Its nothing but wheat crops covering the entire planet, grey sky, barely fertile ground, all crops and fields are 'designed' by the Mechanicus to fit a template and copied over hundreds of worlds, people work 16+ hour shifts in the fields, nobody can leave- and nobody will come to your rescue if the small guard regiment on the planet can't save you.

@midgetydeath2 ай бұрын
Which is another sign of bad writing. Aside from the fact that the fields wouldn't take anywhere near so much time because no duh. Agri Worlds are vitally important. The Imperium wouldn't ignore you and let you die. They'd throw pretty much _everything_ into saving the planet and, ironically, the experienced labor force (as a secondary priority, but even that is still a big deal) necessary for keeping said planet valuable. Agri Worlds feed Hive Worlds, Hive Worlds are where the great bulk of the Imperium's manpower comes from. So, yeah, the Imperium would go apeshit about one being invaded. They never do in the lore, but like I said, that's just extremely bad writing. So bad it should not be taken seriously because if it is, the Imperium would not exist. Everyone would be dead.

The Interrex IIRC had many planets. At first glance this is paradise, where every manual labour is done by solar-powered automata. Every human there is a student in phylosophy, art, science or magic in the hands of aelf professors. Only this is literally student-style life for an entire life - people here are sleep-deprived, drugged (there's a special narcotic wich is brewed by Hyshian students to keep themself constantly awake), condemned to ruthless stresses and worst of all - at the end of their lifes most of the people realize they will never gain knowledge or skill of their aelf professors - humans just don't live long enough for that. Jokes aside, the Malus Darkblade novels paint a very interesting picture of Dark Elf living conditions. For starters, there is a lot of class stratification in their society, with lowborn Druchii at the bottom and the highborn at the top, to the point where they even have criminal gangs and bandits. In "Lord of Ruin", the ruler of Clar Karond was too pre-occupied with day drinking to bother with the political plots and schemes of his colleagues, and Malus's brother Isilvar was both spoiled and indolent, choosing to spend his time enjoying the luxuries of nobility rather than going on raids and such.

@user-zz3sn8ky7z2 жыл бұрын
It was however valuable enough for preserving food that an average person couldn't really afford to waste it on such trivial matters as "making food taste good", so the point in the video about medieval food tasting bad is still relevant (especially when you consider the lack of every other spice)
@bobdole88302 жыл бұрын
@@user-zz3sn8ky7z True that they didn't have access to most valuable spices, they did however use plenty of locally grown or regionally available herbs to make up for it. Even peasants who lived near the coastline could easily make their own salt, it only gained in value the further you were from the sea. In this case yes, the peasants probably wouldn't waste salt as a spice for everyday food. But generally speaking Medieval cousine wasn't just eating unsalted shlock, and permanently feeling hungry, not even for peasants. Of course during winter, war or bad harvests it could be the case that peasants would only eat tasteless gruel to survive, if anything. But during normal times peasants had access to (by today standards) pretty decent bread, fish, vegetables, herbs, sometimes dairy products and eggs etc. I mean they were working hard manual labour 6 days a week, you NEED to eat halfway decent simply to stay alive. A lot of the things people think about medieval cousine are exaggerations and often simply false.

@bavarianpotato Жыл бұрын
Salt was generally plentiful. So plentiful in fact, that throughout history, food being overly salty was a regular issue documented in many cookbooks. During harsher times, especially winters, a lot of the food available would've been salted for storing, especially meat and fish, which gave a lot of foods a very salty taste. But beyond that, food was good. Your palettes adapt to what you're used to; to us, some of the dishes might seem bland, but that's because we're used to the shit we eat nowadays. In reality, you can make very very tasty meals without any access to exotic herbs & spices. Onions, garlic, mushrooms, meat every now and then, maybe some freshly caught fish (much better quality than most of what we get today), carrots, celery, cheese (which was a big part of the european diet)- don't tell me those don't taste good. Probably not spicy (although wild garlic actually can be quite spicy). There's also honey and fruits and beer and wine [...]. Medieval people generally ate quite well, albeit with a bit less than ideal protein intake.

I want to quickly mention that Araby most likely has a much better grasp on medicine than the Empire. If the Doctor you're talking about is the one from Skavenslayer, he learned how to practice medicine from an Arabyan University. Also, you've used Trazyn as an example for someone who might be glad that the Necrons are now soulless immortal machines, even though in the Infinite and the Divine he is clearly shown to lament the loss of the Necrons souls. Part of the reason he collects so many artifacts is to celebrate the Necrons once thriving culture and creativity, and maybe try and regain his soul through it. In the same book, though, we have Orikan, who does like his new body. He believes that the cost of his soul is vastly outweighed by his power over the universe, and he even spends the book trying to be more like the C'tan, who didn't really have any bodies at all until the Necrons gave them some. There's also a propaganda bureau that builds the place up as a perfect Utopia and ruthlessly hunts down any dissenters. Most of the Ruling Dragons are said to secretly view their human subjects as ants and will sacrifice untold numbers of them without hesitation for barely any gain, yet they are worshipped and venerated with such fervor that people will kill for the slightest level of disrespect being aimed at them! And that's just the interior, the Northern borders of Cathay are constantly assailed by Chaos warbands numbering in the tens of thousands monthly, and the Southern Border is a warzone between Khuresh, Ind, and the Monkey King. You never get to leave the ship. But there is absolutely worlds just like how the United States is (warts and all) where nothing much happens, productivity is met or exceeded and atypically shit doesn’t go bad or wrong at all. But to hear about those worlds would be boring and not really in keeping with the tagline “there is only war” so you don’t hear about them. You counter Tilea, why not count different cults for Dark elves then? I can go on with other factions besides Ogres.. Like you did with humans.

It's mind boggling how this simple fact is disputed by so many people. Outside of the witcher world(and even there, before the humans arrived on the continent they were fine) in every fantasy world elves have far better living conditions.

@@justthunderbolt40 Eh… there are a couple of example of Fantasy worlds where elves have it pretty shit. Dragon Age is a big example where not only has their golden age passed, but they’re either living in Slums of Human Cities or Nomads who are at constant risk of humans in the next town over “not taking kindly to your kind round these parts **Spits**” and forming a lynch mob. The overlord games Elves have it kinda shitty too since they pretty much got genocided and their home forest became their king’s Nightmare hellscape.

Here's what I hate about the Empire in fantasy: the lack of unity or practicality. Life sucks for the people of the Empire not just because they live in a feudal pre-industrial society, but because they act like they don't live in the world of Warhammer. They're going about things as if this is a normal human society on Earth with nothing supernatural going on. It's all about rivalries between city states and nobles and elector counts, squabbles over petty claims and insults and taxes. Are they like... not bothered by the fact that there are literal inhuman man-eating monsters in every single direction who adamantly want every member of humanity enslaved or dead or both at once? Like ALL THE TIME? I mean there are ACTUAL daemons jumping out of holes in reality in the north. This is a well-known fact, it's not like governors and dukes don't understand that there are real monsters in their world. So what the hell does it take to get people working together more often? I'm sorry, is the constant threat of hundreds of thousands of monsters pouring from every single direction not enough to get people motivated to stop bitching about how much gold they own or what the gossipy wife of the mayor one town over said about you? As a leader of the Empire you have nothing but a meme (HURR DURR, FURTH, STURL UN GUNPUDUH!!!) to fend off hordes of superhuman terrors that can each individually slice thirty men in half with one swing of their warp-spawned cocks. Meanwhile, you're spending the blood of thousands of men as you wage war with your neighbor because some hoity toity Averlander noblewoman loosely related to the elector count implied that Sigmar didn't grant you a big dick. Que confusion when the magical laser-shooting lovecraftian hellspawn come in the millions and your Steward-of-Gondor ass doesn't understand how you couldn't possibly have enough dirty peasants with floppy hats to throw at the armies of evil. Give the Imperium _some_ credit, they at least properly unite and mobilize against threats (or at least as well as you can when the battlefields are thousands of lightyears apart from each other).

Another thing to consider in 40k is that nice worlds aren't important to the war machine. If Orks come knocking, space marines aren't gonna lift a finger to help. Cadia, a planet next to hell, was hilariously a planet that you'd have the most security in whilst also being able to have normal job to occupy you in between your mandatory PDF shifts.

I remember a friend once telling me this sorta theory in warhammer 40k lore that I really like and I think is emblematic of what is wrong with the Impurium: mainly the theory goes that if the emperor of mankind were to officially die, instead of the world ending his spirit would actually go directly to chaos and maybe not *save* the setting but fix a lot of the issues with chaos and make warp travel safer. Now I'm sure some fat Warhammer 40k nerd who's read horus heresy like 180 times before bed will call me out and say how I'm wrong or whatever but I still like this theory as it shows off the Imperium's hypocrisy nature and how Empire's symbol of hope, the person that formed the culture of this empire and everything they fight for: it's better off dead and forgotten for everyone involved. Humanity is shooting themselves in the foot and they are too prideful and fanatic to realize it. Also reminder anytime you say "praise the emperor", called him "God emperor" or do anything religious in his name you are literally spitting on his wishes and directly in his face given he never wanted a religion around him.

it's even worse for space marines then what's mentioned at 13:44. remember that IF you are selected to become a space marine, your never allowed to see your family again unless your a salamander and even then the process to get there isn't a cakewalk, and if your a salamanders they will quite literally bathe you in fire. you have to go through various different trials and depending on which chapter your apart of the trials alone are so dangerous that you might die at the hands of your fellow initiates on the first trial if you don't die to whatever the trial has you doing in the first place. on top of that in between these trials you also have to endure MULTIPLE surgeries to get all of the required organs to even function as a proper space marine and these surgeries can kill you if your body ends up rejecting or having a bad reaction to whatever organ or gene seed they cram into your body. and it's not just organs either, the first surgery they give you they stick a sheet of metal into your chest. and if they fuck up the surgery somehow and you die cause they fucked up, they will not hesitate to chuck your dead body into the gutters. humanity sucks to live as in 40K

2:23 funny thing actually - my first (and so far only, unfortunately) DnD campaign I took part in was set in a WH-fantasy Empire of man setting. Ironically enough, there was a revolution (liberal socialist though, nowhere near communist), and my character, a paladin working for a holy order dedicated to peacekeeping and order in general, abandoned his party to join the revolutionaries. Funnily enough, he quickly became second in command to the leader of the revolutionaries, an oath of the common man paladin (mine was oath of heroism) who had previously been the only one to comfort my character after he got PTSD from trying to heal people in the city's slums (including the brothel - I actually asked the DM - in character, of course - as to where the place with the most people to heal would be and he said it would be the brothel). After that oath of the common man Paladin died halfway through the revolution (after the city, and multiple others on other continents, had already fallen to it), my character took over and led the revolution (according to the "end slide" of sorts my DM showed us), leading to effectively a blitzkrieg-style overruning of it, leading to less than 2 years of actual war and chaos, giving the chaos cults no time at all to form and bring their gods in, meaning that didnt happen. And for some reason, the DM insisted that my leader became the new Sigmar (as in, a technically immortal deity-level entity) as the gods of order (ironic, since my paladin was an atheist) bestowed the title and gifts on my character. Even crazier, it actually worked according to the DM - I was able to form a liberal socialist democratic system for the main civillian government, with the millitary under my control, as I was given the title "lord protector" (yes, like cromwell - no, I did not go full puritan), and my character succesfully lead this empire to crush the skaven, orcs and many other threats, actually incorporating those loyal to him into the nation he founded, nomatter the race. And he actually created a truly enlightened democracy - basically, what the Emperor from 40k was aiming for for the future of humanity.

It's warhammer. WAR-hammer. There's no peace only war, no pleasure only pain, no life only constant violence, death and destruction. The tabletop game is for doing battles/scenarios/operations that resembles war, not some good life simulator. It's a fantasy that pleasures our mind of wanting constant glory, drama and carnage in battle but also having the pleasure of not dying or losing something (other than money and time) in doing so. I'm just a newbie in this fandom tho and this is what my opinion on what I have read, watch and see in Warhammer universe

@thechangeling38512 жыл бұрын
To be completely hopeful, if there was a race you likely would be isekaied into it would be the orks in 40k. There is just so zoggin many of them (not as much as the tyranids obviously, but tyranids seem to have no free will/intelligence outside of the hivemind) more than humans for certain. The thing is about orks is that your life expectancy is probably going to be very, very short...but orks don't exactly have a "growth" period humans do so you can get right to work, and you are going to enjoy fighting every single minute, laugh at brutality and destruction like children, and frankly feel like you have some sort of belonging to a big group...some may not be the best, and you hate some of the others, but they are still green and that is cool. Basically, orks are by far the most content race in 40k...if your lucky you might have some sort of special skill or are just ard enough to get up the ranks (if your a weird boy...well...that is a unlucky RIP for you) which means you might actually move up in life. Living conditions generally don't seem to be a primary worry...pain just "works different" and a Ork is generally as a whole probably one of the toughest races on average when it comes to survival. (hell...losing your head might just be a inconvicence if a rippa doc is around). frankly, I'm struggling to think of a time in 40k lore where the orcs were actually having a "bad time" and not enjoying themselves as long as they were fighting...
@SamueL-td7fb2 жыл бұрын
The only "sad" Orkz i can think about are the ones trapped in shithole planets with very little resources. Which means all tribes are weak, the growth rate is low because of how little killing is taking place, plus they can't even leave in space ships because the resources are absolute garbage and all tribes have next to nothing anyway. All you can do is hope that a big and strong Warboss rises to power and unites the clans, and that might take a while...
@thechangeling38512 жыл бұрын
@@SamueL-td7fb even then there still is fighting among the tribes, and orks love to fight (if they don't fight other tribes they probably would fight among themselves). Basically as long as there is not any major land features that keep them from fighting each other they will find ways to scrap with each other. Part of me now wants to see a bunch of classical era or age of the sail naval game where its just a bunch of orks on a mostly island planet waging naval war against each other like a bunch of priates
@thechangeling38512 жыл бұрын
@MonsterousBearFolk i mean...that is the ork mindset I honestly think. I don't think orks die of old age, and to an individual ork they believe that they will become the strongest and best until someone krumps them and proves them wrong. If I'm correct I don't think orks even have a concept of death as we know it...like they know something might hurt a ton, and that they can kill gitz, but they don't generally seem to have a fear of death (being final) rather instead a fear of significant pain...which makes sense as why some orks effectively on adrenaline rushes don't seem to have limited to no self preservation, because they are being driven to ignore stupid amounts of pain. Though...this is all a theory and observation from one whom doesn't fully understand ork lore...especially as im more a necron and tech priest enthusiast.

12:00 I think your "hive worlds account for half of 40k humanity" is a solid heuristic. IRL ca. 2020s Earth has a bit more than 50% urbanization rate, so assuming hive worlds are 3k equivalent of cities it is not a stretch to estimate half or more humans in those "city" worlds. If someone asks me to pick a race to live in 40k universe I will choose the bois every time. I am not choosing humans; it is like betting my physical and mental well-being on a Powerball or Mega-Millions.

I disagree with most of the points brought up in fantasy. Lacking modern technology and comfort doesn't make their lives particularly worse compared to contemporary people and there isn't a sense of woe among Bretonnia, the Empire of Man or Cathay compared to other races. Both High Elves and Dwarves are dying races, many of their current cities being partially empty due to dwindling inhabitants which leaves a sense of melancholy. Then the dark and wood elves have far from comfortable lives where the former live in a tribal society where every day is a fight to survive with the threat of beastmen or tree spirits killing you at random. The dark elves are arguably the worst society to live in considering their cutthroat society which has amazingly awful traditions such as Blood Night where mass murder is condoned and infants are thrown into boiling cauldrons mostly to die. Also the Dark Elves live on the verge of the chaos wastes which means they regularly fight hordes of daemons and chaos worshippers. Overall I feel this is unfair to the humans and overstated the apperant suffering a common person would face.
@justthunderbolt402 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's an exaggeration, considering that the vast majority of the population of human factions, like Brettonia, live a life of hard work for nothing at all, purposely kept in ignorance and yet called to be cannon fodder every time a chaos invasion comes. Beastmens and dark elves have it worse, true: but why would anyone, given the choice, choose to be born as a bretonnian peasant, rather than be born as an elf in Avelorn and live a life free of any hardship thanks to magic?

And then when they HAVE children it takes them gods know how long to reach adulthood and start families of their own, meanwhile more and more elves are dying every day from one conflict or another. The Dwarves in Warhammer are Particularly bad about the whole matter due to the book of grudges the have to follow. They launch a war over being slighted a few pennys,, then they take down the list of dwarves who died during THAT war and now that needs to be avenged, and on and on. @@Mongoosesummoner That's why the elves prefer to use manipulation to get what they want, rather than start wars for everything as the dwarves do. Their numbers will always be low due to their fertility, but I'd rather live a few centuries with the complete freedom of doing what I want, rather than be a peasant in the empire or bretonnia, constantly working just to scrape by and at the risk of being drafted because the lords keep fighting among themselves.
