Hey, read the comics. Three Viltrumites can go super speed and blow up a planet by plowing through the core. Not all Viltrumites are at Omni Man's level but enough are. There's Viltrumite overlords strong enough to casually punch holes through Mark and Nolan. Furthermore in the comic's lore, there's reanimated corpses of Viltrumites (Mark's body from other dimensions) capable of being stronger by virtue of being enhanced by tech. That said, Viltrumites (gosh darn this is the most I've ever typed out that word) do have a weakness to audio, so noise marines could stop them or at least disorient them. There's monsters capable of eating viltrumites that can live in vacuums. There's a dude who can shoot a destructive beam that essentially never ends (he also looks like the Grinch). Robot is what Batman fans wish he could be for prep time. Robot will find a ton of ways to prep and make ultimate cheesed counter measures. Also back to Superman - Long established tradition holds that Superman is vulnerable to magic items or magic. A magical sword will slice him. Not sure if Chaos powered weapons would count

I think an important thing to examine is cooperation within settings. The species of Mass Effect, for example, are pretty weak when contrasted to other sci fi settings. But one thing we know about the ME species is that they can all band together to fight a common foe. Every spacefaring species in the galaxy, including ones that had previously committed genocide against each other, came together to fight the Reapers. Compare this to 40k, where getting even 2 races to fight together for a brief period is a massive hurdle. It wouldn't be 40k vs Mass Effect - it would be *every* ME race vs the Imperium of Man, who still has to busy themselves fighting Eldar and Tyranids etc. Alliances of weaker powers can beat stronger ones, or at least survive.

I remember a line from a Halo book where an Elite wants to fight smart versus Humans, who were lesser than, supposedly. His commander says "The Humans seek an open fight! If they will fight head on, bravely, can we do any less?" He muttered after withdrawing to follow orders: "But as Elites... we should aspire to more."

On the Grunt Rebellions, it should be noted Grunts are only "Cowards" because they're slaves. They have no real reason to want to die for something that hates them. But when the Jackals decided to be....Jackals, and they had a cause to fight for, they are Fucking terrifying. Imagine a million strong horde of chimpanzees with club-like knuckles, with a penchant for explosives and near zero-regard for survival so long as the enemy dies. No wonder the Elites so potential.
