The beautiful thing about it is you can tell when they discovered the sea Armin knew in his heart that Eren had always envisioned their dream of seeing it differently. His mind was so warped from the fact that his lack of reaching the sea made him a slave that he could never see the beauty in it, and it would always be a milestone. I feel like the themes Armin discusses with Zeke and his efforts to get him to see the beauty in life are things he desperately wanted to communicate with Eren. That he understood the concept of not being free, understood that deep, harrowing hatred for people, but there was so much beauty to the world that they could've seen.

My headcannon is that Erwin believes and sees Armin as a better version of himself. Erwin used to be a dreamer, but became a realist as move forwards. That is why I love the Midnight Sun, both sacrificed themselves beyond the walls but Armin won. I am an Erwin fanboy btw.

@@AM17titan The problem is honestly that they *didn't* push Armin to be like the best leader, and that no one had faith in Hange due to her taking responsibility for the serum bowl. Erwin is way too glorified. He is the easy and pragmatic choice, don't get me wrong. But his experience and skills are not what puts him individually above Hange or Armin, because the only thing he knows is how to fight titans, while they did the dirty work during the coup and fought humans. His strategies are obsolete by the end of season 3 and Liberio proves that the Scouts excel without him. People just imagine he'd do a better job because of his cult. Erwin's ACTUAL advantage is clout.

Our Boy Armin was the Narrator of the story, in the way, he was also the main protagonist alongside Eren! Every single scene with Armin pushed the story forward and in a way, he did turn out to be the rest of humanity’s saviour in a way, even though Mikasa was the one to deliver the final blow

I would argue that the "devil we need" idea is why Armin was revived in the first place. He does not represent that. Erwin keeps on sacrificing people again and again and does not try to do better, just win the next objective. Armin also commits atrocities to his fellow men, but he attempts to be better, and that's why I think he is not a "devil"

Armin is the most altruistic character, always ready to sacrifice his personal interests for the sake of achieving the common good. Many consider his desire for negotiations a weakness, but this requires much more effort than a violent response to violence (forgive the tautology). Armin's principles should be applied in real life: after all, at the personal, domestic, corporate, and state levels, there will be far fewer conflicts if people understand each other's motives, recognize their opponent as an equal, and come to an agreement among themselves. Then we will be able to build a truly civilized society, and not a pack with the principle of "revenge for revenge, blood for blood."

While negotiation is the ideal, it's not always an option. Imagine if Armin didn't shoot the military police, that was pointing their gun at Jean. Armin also manipulated Bertholdt and Yelena for his own gain. He also did blow up Marleys fleet. And at the end he thanked Eren for doing the rumbling. Becouse he knew that if Eren didn't do it, everyone on the island would've been eliminated and he couldn't make the choice himself. That's why he's grateful for Eren, even if he might not fully agree. King Fritz is also a criticism of blind pacifism. He moved all his people to an island and held them captured, letting them be annihilated if other nations decided to do so. You could say King Fritz is an idealist, while Armin is kind of in between. Both an idealist but also a realist. He knows how the world works and at times you can't end things peacefully but you can always try. No one is good for everyone as he says.

At least, it'd make no sense if that was why: Eren jeopardized the lives of his friends on several occasions, got Sasha and Hange killed, compromised nearly their entire military by cooperating with Zeke (an actual enemy of the state) behind their backs, and allowed the Jeagerists to set the island's inhabits against each other. If he used any variant of the 50 year plan, or even if he just went with Yelena's limited Rumbling strategy, they would have been able to crush any global allied fleet, render the world incapable of getting to Paradis for however long, and send the world into economic disarray that would see them not even being able to arrange a military force to attack Paradis-- all so they could bargain from a position of strength, with a much less severe kill count that included far less (if any) civilian lives. Even Willy's plea to invade Paradis wouldn't have actually gained traction if he wasn't killed right then and there by Paradis as to exemplify the threat-- and he counted on that. Armin's thanking Eren after having heard, on one hand, that Eren did this to save them, and on the other hand also hearing that Eren just wanted to do this. He already knew this couldn't have just been to save the island, and he was outright told by him that he would have completed the Rumbling even if he didn't know he'd be stopped (in contradiction to his earlier claim that he performed the Rumbling with the intention of being killed by his friends so they could be made heroes). The head editor, not long after the manga ending, described this as him attempting to relate to someone he realized he didn't really understand all these years. Isayama, not long after the anime ending, described in an interview that his intention all along was to have Armin choose to share responsibility for the Rumbling. Me, when I was reading the manga, I figured that Armin took to heart what Jean said when they were observing the beginning of the Rumbling: that they, Eren's friends, were the only ones who benefitted from it, and that he was at least thinking of them-- even if they weren't his only motivation.

Once the dust is settled, he's relieved that Eren took down an existential threath to them. But they're not betraying their own side during a war, just setting that straight. In order for that to happen, they need Historia to constantly have kids. Then they need to force those kids to inherit a titan shifter (not the coordinate becouse of royal blood). And then they need another person to inherit the coordinate and pass it down for decades. On top of that both persons need to have the same conviction to protect the island as someone like Eren or Floch. Becouse if through those 50 year, someone inherits one of the 2 titans and they don't want to be part of it. Someone like Zeke, Willy or King Fritz. Then the whole thing falls apart. This is simply too big a risk. In other words, Eren could only trust himself with the power of the rumbling. "Even Willy's plea to invade Paradis wouldn't have actually gained traction if he wasn't killed right then and there" It was pretty heavily implied that Willy were rallying the world to attack the island. He did make a war declaration. Especially as he revealed to them that the rumbling would be inevitable, if the world refused to help Marley in the attack. "in contradiction to his earlier claim that he performed the Rumbling with the intention of being killed by his friends so they could be made heroes" Eren started by saying that to make excuses for himself and Armin clogged that immediately and said that wasn't realistic. To which Eren also agreed, meaning he knew that already. This is just spelling out to the audience why "making them heroes to the world" simply isn't realistic. As many who read/watch needs that spelled out, becouse they don't understand how the world works (calling out Code Geass fans). Then after Eren says his true goal, which was to level everything. Meaning he wanted to kill enough to where they'd be even with the island. Giving the eldians a chance of survival.

Jean outright says that Sasha died because of Eren; the narrative also visually indicates Eren's culpability in Sasha's death by having a transition from Eren pulling the rifle trigger in the post-Marley raid flashback, right into the scene of Sasha's death. In the anime, Eren outright blames himself for Sasha and Hange's deaths when talking to Armin for the last time. *_It was not the jeagerists who betrayed their own people/the island. That was the scouts who did that._* No, it was the Yeagerists who blew up the head of state *_and cooperated with an enemy of the state behind the backs of everyone else_* in order to compromise the rest of the military. Paradis was severely off its footing by the time of the Shiganshina attack because of this. *_There is so many holes in that plan, it's pretty much guaranteed to fail_* They nearly lost the power of the Founder in the Shiganshina attack. Reiner could have eaten Eren. Eren could have been shot any earlier by Gabi. Zeke (who was nearly dead) could have not caught Eren's head. Eren could have expired earlier than he did after being decapitated. Paradis had nearly no military _from the start_ of the battle-- they were outgunned and outmanned. They could have been wiped out right then, and then the untouched Global Allied Fleet (who were able and willing to assemble because they saw the active apocalyptic threat manifest at the Liberio raid that killed countless diplomats and civilians) could have went to wipe out the rest of Paradis on schedule. Eren's plan, unlike any 50 year plan, actively relied on multiple parties being kept in the dark about each other's activities. The only reason Eren can trust himself, beyond his self-assuredness, is because he's seen the future to know that he'll get past that point, even if he mostly doesn't know how. But he _also_ said that he thinks he would have done this all even without having seen any of the future, and the future is strictly a product of the past (meaning it was always going to be what it was) so we can judge him for his actions conventionally. *_It was pretty heavily implied that Willy were rallying the world to attack the island._* It wasn't "heavily implied"-- he explains in chapter 100 that he already figured out (albeit too late) that there were Paradisian moles in Marley that were planning to at least weaken the Marleyan military. Taking advantage of this, he sought to sacrifice countless diplomats, soldiers, and civilians in order to seriously rally the world to invade Paradis. He reasons that they wouldn't bother, otherwise, especially considering the rest of the world hates Marley even if they also hate Paradis. *_Eren started by saying that to make excuses for himself and Armin clogged that immediately and said that wasn't realistic. To which Eren also agreed, meaning he knew that already. This is just spelling out to the audience why "making them heroes to the world" simply isn't realistic._* It's more than that, because Eren would have _never_ thought that it was a realistic goal (cf. chapter 12). Meanwhile, he already likened himself to Reiner in chapter 100 (the man who ruined his life, and whose motivations were explored in chapters 95-97, then summarized by himself also in chapter 100). We get even further clarification on what that meant in chapter 131. Also, in chapter 131, he outright explains to Ramzi the full breadth of his motivations-- it is not just that he wants to protect his friends and island, which makes sense of his repeated jeopardizing of his friends and island. At any rate, he didn't want to just make the rest of the world's population even with that of the island: he just knew that he was going to die at the point that he got that far. He outright says that he intended to level _everything,_ and would have tried to do so even if he didn't know he would be stopped all the same. We know he didn't deliberately intend to wipe out 80% (as opposed to 100%) also because he stated he'd wipe out the outside world before the undercover trip to Marley.

His final conversation with his best friend Eren was pretty great in my opinion. Not only does he condemn Eren's actions but he also chooses to remain his best friend by understanding Eren's actions and shows empathy and sympathy. And deciding to shoulder some of Eren's guilt and wrong doing. To me that shows what a best friend truly is. ( though I do think Eren let them win because of how he views Freedom. Not that he made it easy but Eren was done by that point probably even before that.)

It's interesting how 4 experienced leaders give Armin a vow of thrust: Erwin, Pyxis, Levi, and Hange. And yet he eliminates (in a symbolic manner) 3 of them. He is chosen over Erwin. Kills Pyxis titan's form. And Hange dies immediatly after designating him as the next commander. At first, when Hange chose Armin instead of Jean (who had become a smart, quick-thinking leader) I thought to myself that, even if it was a good choice, it felt a bit like fan service. But you are right: Armin holds his ground and keeps moving forward. I didn’t fully understand the meaning of Hange’s words at the moment: "The position calls for a certain quality: a mindset of continuously pursuing understanding. There's no one more suitable than you." And it's so true. Guides like Levi and Jean are good in taking decisions in the midst of the battle. But commanders want more than that: they need and live for knowledge and that's what keeps them pushing boundaries. In the end, Armin was perfect for a world without titans.

One thing I’d like to add that no one brings up is that it wasn’t just Eren lifting the boulder he came up with, it was pretty much the whole plan of saving Trost, he goes over it all with Gus and Anka. Also it was so great to hear the dub Armin breakdown, I can’t tell you how satisfied I was, it couldn’t be more perfect. JJ Grelle as Armin is my personal favorite casting choice in the show, out of both sub & dub.

Armin is my absolute favourite character in aot (and also probably in any piece of media I've ever consumed), you captured his essence and what makes his character incredible so, so well. When I first starting watching aot, I think what originally drew me in to his character was the portrayal of an 'underdog' , and what kept him as my favourite was how he continued to grow (his need to keep moving forward, as you highlighted.) I think his 'flaw' (in quotes because it feels wrong to call an insecurity a flaw) of having low self esteem helps him to be a better leader, and also his drive to keep pushing forward. He needed reassurance for the choices he made until he eventually became what he envisioned in that heartbreaking scene of his breakdown in the Paths. Anyways, I cried watching this video because I love him so much and his imposter syndrome and crippling self esteem issues are WAY too real lmfao!! This video was incredible :)

Best video i've seen on Armin! Have seen a few others but they tend to be very surface level or just misunderstands his character entirely. This covered the various aspects of him and the nuances that comes with it! Very satisfying to watch. One aspect i also felt was nice is his introduction. First we see him get beat up and when Eren and Mikasa defend him. Eren reaches his hand out to help him up. Rather than taking Eren's hand like you'd see in any other show. Armin refuses and says he can stand up himself. It's easy to overlook but this says so much for his character as we see throughout the series. He's personally my second favorite character next to Eren.

I have always loved Armin's character and how he was developed and I'm glad i watched this video, it really highlights some details that i missed, and I'm going to be honest that scene with Armin yelling at himself had me almost crying for him, that scene is one of the scenes that have broke me and had to make me think about life.

Awesome video! Id argue part of armins themes are a balance between hope and pragmatism. He has the vision of a mysterious world beyond the horizon worth exploring to inspire/motivate himself and his peers. Likewise he possesses just enough cynicism to consider the brutal methods needed to actually defeat the titans and reach those goals. I just rewatched season 1 and its kinda heartbreaking to see how mikasa and armin were complicit in the radicalization of eren. Armin is the first person to suggest tossing aside his humanity and basically win via war crimes. Meanwhile when eren is still hesitating to fight annie, mikasa gives a monolog pressuring him in a scene that 1 to 1 mirrors erens coercion of his father to kill the reise children. Its kinda wild how much they foreshadowed in 2013

I just realized that Armin and Erwin both were equally prepared to die as a "hero" in battle. Their situations are pretty much a trolly problem. Which one are you going to run over with the trolly? Although, we are lead to believe that Armin was the right choice actually for a few reasons. Though I think his role in the series is meant to symbolize that the young generation will save humanity.

Hey man, I absolutely love your analysis videos, you explain everything so well in such a great way. The only thing I'd recommend is putting spoiler warnings. Now obviously for videos like these its kinda obviously there'll be spoilers, but i think its especially important for videos like your jjk and chainsaw man videos, sense it was kind of hard to tell if you were gonna talk about manga stuff. If I were to go into depth about exactly what I feel towards Armin Arlert it would take hours and come out looking like a schizo post so I’ll justr say… he’s gonna be at the front of my mind for 10 years at least (not including the 8 that have already passed since I first watched aot). This man is, to put it lightly, “kinda poggers”. He is the reason I touch grass. He is the reason I have friends. He is the reason I know I am bisexual. He is the reason I scream “UMI DA” every time I see the ocean and the reason I purposely burn my food when I cook. I have drawn him at least seven hundred times and own zero Armin merch because I think that buying merch of him would be commodifying him and therefore disgracing him. So me again..... Greatly appreciate this video about Armin. And I fully agree with it. And Armin is my favorite character but not on his own. I realize this maybe unpopular on this video but I can't really explain it. But to me Eren, Armin and Mikasa are equally my favorite characters. All three serve their roles and they are important ones. I really love their friendship though S4 is extremely rocky. But hey at least it got rekindled in a way. To me you can't have one without the other. Of course thats debatable because not everyone likes Eren or Mikasa and well Armin. But that ok. ( man I need to learn how to say things with less words)

I think the point of his character is not to be Erwin #2, but to accept himself with all his flaws and virtues. Armin has always suffered from self-doubt, from not recognizing his sense of self-worth, and the perfect ending for his character is accepting himself, which happens in the conversation with Zeke, which took place right after the culmination of the accusation of his own incompetence. Have you read Requiem? It is there that Armin uses Erwin's speeches and becomes his second "I".
