LOL The descriptions are so much like the old E.E. Doc. Smith writings in such series as the "Lensman" books... "coruscant scintillating deluges of vibrant energies inundating the target with overwhelming torrents of destruction"... or my version "the running dog lackeys of the industrial military complex arraigned against the peace-loving peoples of collective destiny..."

Bears a small shade of similarity to the universe of David Brin's "uplift series". With a huge major difference of the more ancient races existence and the left behind tech they created bestowing knowledge onto a human representative. In the Brin universe the progenitors were viewed as a race who uplifted countless species to true sentience and established a multigalaxy organization of those sentience species. Then they inexplicably disappeared. I'd bet the author of this story read the uplift series. Then shuffled Brin's ideas and his until he came up with something he could rightly call his own. This was a very enjoyable story.

Why would a ships Captain send a boarding crew over to a ships with failing systems? Send crafts to evacuate the personal or "transport" their personal off the failing vessel. Sounds like the author just want a reason to introduce the human crew to the "anomaly". Bad craftsmanship.
