@@lostShadowLord There is an experimental pistol from the 50s that operated on bolter/gyrojet tech. It proved to be too expensive and finicky. It was also too slow leaving the barrel (you could apparently literally stop the bullet from leaving the gun by sticking your finger over the barrel). 40k bolters get around this issue by having a conventional slugthrower charge to shoot the rocket out at super-to-hypersonic speeds (depending on the bolter and the type of bolt round) and then the rocket motor kicks in and makes it start moving even faster. Rather ironically, between the minimum arming distance on the rounds explosive payload and the rocket motor, a bolter is less dangerous at point blank range and more dangerous the further out you are. Morals are the same as rules. They vary from culture to culture. Some consider it morally reprehensible to cannibalize. Other consider it reprehensible to put corpses in the ground and leave them to rot. Morals exist to guide a culture toward a permanent prosperous nature. A means to generate and acquire more things. Rules, on the other hand... exist so that those who do not engage in behaviors a civilization deems "moral", are punished for it. "Morals" are behaviors a civilization values for continued prosperity. "Rules" exist to enforce those behaviors. It is the difference between declaring a belief and enforcing that belief.

To be fair I agree with the thrax. The human were stupid in this story babbling about war crimes. There is not such thing as war crimes when talking about xenos. It's pest control

If a species needs rules and laws, enforced by every other country of a very divisive planet, in order to try not to go too far when waging war, then 2nd guess your decision to go to war with them.
