How to Use SoapCalc (it's easy!)

If you're getting into soap making, one of the first things you'll need to learn is how to calculate your recipes using a soap calculator. I've used SoapCalc (www.soapcalc.ne...) for years, so here's a quick video walking you though how to plug a recipe into SoapCalc to turn a recipe written in percents into a recipe you can make!

You will want to calculate your entire recipe at 5% superfat to ensure you actually get a 5% superfat; simply adding an extra 5% of oils by weight will not result in a 5% superfat unless the oil you add has exactly the same SAP value as the average SAP of all the oils you are calculating the recipe at.

This is such a great video! I wonder. If I wanted to choose the ingredients for medicinal purposes. Would it still work? Does it matter how much of any oil from the list I choose? Why are things so poorly named? "Super Fat" has nothing to do with a special kind of fat, oh no, it means using less lye... So why is it called "super fat"? So 5% less lye = 5% super fat? The fact that it needs to be explained is evidence of how badly named it is. And of the many videos I have watched, you are the first person to explain it clearly. Thank you.

I've always assumed the root of the use of "super" in this term was related to/in the same vein as the word "superfluous" (unnecessary, especially through being more than enough), but yeah, it's not a great name! "Superfluous fat" would make more sense, but holy moly that's quite the mouthful!

Thank you for the video. I have one question. If I'm making 2 kilograms of a batch of oils and want to add 60 Gr fragrance weight, shall I discount this from the 2 kg or add the 60 Gr to the 2 kg. In other words, should the total weight be 2 kg with the fragrance weight? Or should the total weight be 2 kg and 60 Gr all together?

Seems so easy! How would we workout the percentage of our own ingredients ? Does the ratio of the different oils matter ?

You can just enter the ingredients into the weight column and the calculator does it for you :) And yes, the ratio does matter! Try entering different amounts of different oils and noting how much the numbers for hardness, lather, etc change :) That said, if you're new to soaping I'd recommend using tried-and-true recipes for a while to get a feel for soaping-this one (www.humblebeeandme.com/my-all-in-one-soap-recipe/) is great!

So Marie, how do you know which butters and oil are comparable in making a great bars. So let’s say, for sensitive skins or acne face you want to make soap for. Which butters and oils are good. Do you research to find out which are good together?
