I'm so grateful that I get to occasionally work with brands I actually like to create sponsored videos. Their direct support helps keep this channel afloat in the ever unstable world of KZbin ad revenue. These videos will always be disclosed, of course, and I appreciate everyone's kind support for these partnerships. Royalty Soaps also participates in commission or discount affiliations, like Amazon or RewardStyle, as these opportunities become available, like Amazon and RewardStyle and while the money we make with these links isn't much, every little bit counts and once again, we really appreciate your support! These products will always be marked and disclosed with a "✦".

Rachael Keagy hi there! Sorry for responding now! I just noticed the notification. The amount of lye/sodium hydroxide would be 4.60 (or 4.6oz) and the amount of water is 8.50 (or 8.5oz) which Katie suggest half (4.25 oz) in liquid form and the other half (4.25 oz) in ice. It sure helps not creating steam. Keep in mind the ice will melt really fast because the temperature gets up so be careful handling the container once you finished the solution because it will get super hot. (Mine got to 150F) Oh! And remember to pour lye into water.

The percentage is based on your personal preference. Different oils have different properties and different recommended usage rates. I recommend you read the soap classes articles on natures garden candle website as well as the oils in soap making article on the soap queen website. So you get the general idea. After you have came up with a recipe of oils you want to use with their corresponding percentages that equal 100% then you enter it on soap cal to get the amount of each ingredient. You measure with a scale btw

A question- Is the oil blend something we can keep mixed up ahead of time (and if so, how far in advance can we keep it), or does it have to be done just prior?

Sure is! www.soapguild.org/how-to/ingredients/masterbatching.php

You can mix it ahead of time. It's called master batching. You'll just have to warm it up a bit and blend it before you portion it out for the recipe since the oils will separate in the batch. Oils that are stored for a long time (months or years) can oxidize which will result in brown specs in the soap. They're harmless but unsightly. So if you aren't going to use the oil in the next couple of weeks I wouldn't mix ahead. If I master batch I use it within 45 days and keep it sealed in a food safe container away from light, indoors, at room temperature. Oxidation occurs faster if exposed to light or if the temperature fluctuates too much. Also, butters like cocoa butter or mango butter can rot if you master batch so I wouldn't include them at all.

The first time I made soap it was for an organic chemistry class project... even knowing proper lab safety I did everything outside in a full lab coat with goggles, gloves, and I had an open gallon of vinegar in easy reach just in case. I also added the lye to the water so slowly that it took me thirty minutes for what I think was only eight or nine grams of sodium hydroxide. The only thing I've changed is that now I mix the oil and lye inside... I still wear full lab gear and mix the lye solution outside with an open gallon of vinegar in easy reach. Though, I do mix the sodium hydroxide and water a bit quicker now but still not all in one go. Feel free to panic and walk away... you won't hurt anything by walking away. You may just end up with a bunch of soap in a plastic pitcher that you'll have to figure out how to use or get rid of.

I had a question about soap making, you stated in another video that putting fresh flowers in a soap is not right, but can I add crushed petals of a dried rose in a soap? Is doing that right or wrong and does it add anything to the soap?

Allison Autrey Yes but it may take a bit longer, and if your just starting out I would probably use a stick blender so then it’s easier to follow along with Katie. Hope this was helpful! ❤️

Hello from Belgium, Katie👋😁. Love your vibe! I am a small candle maker but love love to learn how to make soap🤪😆. Is it possible, maybe in the future, to also say how many grams you use as to ounces? Yep the metric system huh 🤔😁. Have fun making your beautiful soap and I'll have fun watching more of the videos!!! 👍❤

Katie, I was wondering about the amount of fragrance oil per pound of oils we should be useing?
@skyydancer67
@skyydancer67 4 жыл бұрын
If you are using the fragrance oils Katie suggested, you can use them at a rate of up to 5%. You would want 3% to have a lighter scent that comes through.

I enjoy your videos but do have a question: In your lye video, you use 8.52 oz of water and 4.59 oz of lye. But your basic beginner recipe has 10.2 oz of water and 5.10 of lye. Which amounts should I use for my beginner recipe?
