One nice OEM upgrade for one of the issues listed: control arm bushings. Get the solid rubber bushings from an Audi TT or Golf R32. They are a LOT more durable and don't allow nearly as much movement as even a new stock bushing. The steering feels significantly more direct. And they fit not only Mk4s, but mk3s, B3/4 Passats, Corrados and even Mk2s.

Between my 2 daughters and my wife, we have 3 Mk4 Jettas. I would add glove box hinge, center armrest, dashboard cup holder, wiring from body to trunk lid, trunk lock, finish on aluminum wheels, LF wheel contact with fender liner, ECU control of A/C (can't fix it because we can't get a code), and moisture leading to foam under oil cap. I'm a sucker for styling and the Mk4 is hands down the best looking Jetta ever.

i love my mkiv. what engines do u have
@frankhoward76458 жыл бұрын
The cars are all practically identical. 2.0 gas motors with 5-speed manual transmissions. I know my wife and my daughters. They couldn't care less about extra power from a turbo or from a VR-6 and all I saw was more headaches so I made sure they all got the most basic engine. They're all GLS models so they all have sunroofs, heated seats, etc. I stayed away from the diesel because I wasn't up to learning a whole new concept in maintaining cars. Kind of nice that the cars are identical because I only have to navigate one learning curve.
@mujjuman8 жыл бұрын
Nice!! Sounds great. The 2.0 is a solid engine, even if it is underpowered. It gets the job done and gets good mpg. What do you avg? Props to them driving 5sp. I have a 5MT Jetta VR6.. horrible city mileage haha
@frankhoward76458 жыл бұрын
Everybody has their opinion of what underpowered is. I believe they're plenty fast enough and as I said, my wife and daughters aren't into drag racing. They just want a comfortable ride that gets them where they want to go with reasonable efficiency. As far as fuel economy is concerned, my kids don't pay attention to it and I've been driving my wife's car for only 8 months so I don't really know yet. Have yet to take it on a long trip however I suspect it will not match the 40mpg we acheived on trips with the car it replaced, a 1994 Mazda Protege 1.8 (actually 1,839cc). Before I sold the Mazda, I took note that at 70mph, it was reving at something like 3,200 rpm while the Jetta revs at 3,800 at the same speed so the final drive must be taller on the Mazda. Taking into consideration the extra 600 pounds of weight, the extra 145cc of engine displacement, and the shorter gearing, I don't expect the Jetta to return more than 35mpg highway.
@MartinAdrianoFlores8 жыл бұрын
Funny you say you have bad MPG with the VR6 because I have a 2001 Jetta with the VR and I get no less than 22mpg, not bad for a 16 year old V6

Beetles from 2000 can be got for around £600 in the UK (quite cheap for a VW imo and maybe for a future classic) . Currently I own a Ford Fiesta Mark 4 (Smiley) 1.3 Endura Engine which cost me £418 from Ebay with a full service history I've got a service coming up in a c ouple of months I've owned it for 2 and a half months and it's been a fine little car and good MPG (40 to 50 mpg). Just thought that maybe ANY make of car will serve you well if it's serviced as per the manufacturers guidelines .. what's your opinion on this say if I were to buy a £600 Beetle? I'm just asking a general opinion because there is a little voice telling me that replacement parts will be of the revised and improved versions these days and essentially something old drives forth as something of better performance and reliability .....
@Limeslice4r643 жыл бұрын
@@TheFusedplug late addition, but so long as you get a manual transmission, which I'm sure in the UK is no problem at all, they are still perfectly fine vehicles. So long as they were maintained of course. I currently drive a Mk4 Jetta TDI (alh of course) and it's been moving me for well over 2 years with no major problems. I take care of it mostly but the big stuff I leave to certified mechanics. It has been nothing but good to me, only offering me some small projects for the weekend on occasion. The thing about direct injection is there is no fuel flowing with the air to continually clean deposits. Now that gas rigs have converted to direct injection, too, we should see a lot more of this issue. Apparently there is no free lunch!

When I turn on the contact I can hear relays switching and even the door lights are flashing, Today I checked all grounds on the lower dash and they look good 0.1Ohm to the Battery. Already cleaned the ground connection under the battery tray. Today I also noticed that when I hit the brake pedal at the moment the car won't crank that that also causes the dash to fade out and reset clock amd trip. Last 7 weeks I only had this problem twice while daily driving on weekdays. I have seen in online forums that this is a issue that appears to happen (maybe common issue) but never really saw a plausible solution.

Seems you have fixed quite a lot of vw. I have a vw beetle 1999 2.0L. I've had quite a few problems. The one I'm stuck with at the moment is codes p0301 and p0304. I just changed the Spark plugs plus the spark plugs wires and the "check engine" light keeps coming up with those same codes. The car kind shakes and you can hear a rattle. By this video I got that it might be the catalytic converter. Can the codes be showing bacause of the catalytic or is that something else? I would really appreciate some guidance

Have you seen the coolant temp sensor fail and not throw a code? I've been having problems with my car stalling out as the car is warming up.

I've owned a mk4 GTI for about 4 months now. I spent 5 five minutes looking for these problems, and sure enough it had some replacement parts. Car Fax said the cat, switches, and window regs were done, thankfully. With the roads in my area I ate bushings for breakfast and replaced those a month ago.

My automatic 2002 beetle shifts really hard when going past 35 mph but drives smoothly with no issues after that or when going slow speeds, it just started doing this. Hope the transmission isn't breaking down.

7:50 My 2004 Golf 2.0 had a po343, 4 coil codes and the engine would not spin pass 3,100 rpm. The dealer wanted $2,048 to replace the timing belt. I replace the $17 temp sensor and everthing was fine.

Hi Richard. Thank you very much for the vid. Really helpful to get this improtant information. Can I please ask a question about the fourth item of the vid, about the coolant temperature. I have my 2002 Beetle (2.0 ltr engine) with a strange phenomena. As starting the engine the coolant temperature indicates blue on the dashboard. I guess this is how it supposed to be. After a while, when the engine is at the right temperature, the blue coolant temperature indicator light starts flashing and will not stop flashing during the entire ride. I already exchanged the coolant reservoir, but that wasn't helping. Do you have any clue what happens here? Thanks in advance. Kind regards Carlo, the Netherlands

A friend has a 2004 Beetle and it won't shift properly until the car has warmed up. Otherwise you have to lift your foot off the gas and then it will. Kind of like Chevy powerglides would do when they were getting old. Any ideas....water temp sensor??

Hello, i have a 99 vw bug that the brake light indicator is on forever. It has been with 4 mechanics and still can't fix it. All the sensors ( brake, master cylineer, hand brake, the common) issues have been checked and all is working fine. The abs module was replaced and still the BRAKE light in the dash is on. Can you share some insights or experience, a solution would be appreciated. Thanks

I've had the rear bushings on my 2000 vw beetle GLX replaced because every bump felt and sounded like the suspension was nearly breaking itself. However, it seems that the front bushings need replacing as well since I'm getting a squeeking sound and the occasional clunk in hard turns. Is this an immediate issue or can it be left alone? I'm a college student on a budget

Great Video, I am having a weird problem with my 2003 Beetle with a 2.0 engine. The cruise control starts to surge if set at 70 MPH or higher. This also causes the speedometer to bounce and not read speeds over 80. no check engine light or engine codes. speedometer works fine if I don't use the cruise. It also seems like my speedometer is about 2 MPH faster than what I'm actually going. Any ideas? Thanks!

Speed sensor failure theres a couple videos on u tube showing how to repair it with epoxy or u could just replace it i guess were the wire plugs in cracks or delaminates from the sensor

hey humble! i am going thru a electrical nightmare, i replaced the BLS to the new green one, bought a new third brake light, brake lights worked but i had a blown parking light fuse(23), basically my brake lights would only work w the light s off and all other lights(turn/reverse) on the rear worked. i cleaned up a bunch of wires in the loom/headlight casing and replaced fuses and bulbs/ new oem headlight switch. i notice if i unplug the ballast the fuse doesnt blow but now my brake lights dont work again, could this be do to the system being unbalanced, probably gonna go back to stock headlights. brake lights will not work/intermittent(all 3) if i use my headlights, idk what to do thanks!

I’m quite new to your channel so I apologize if you’ve covered this in a previous video. I have a 2004 VW Jetta 1.8L T with a speed sensor error. I’ve heard every recommendation from replacing the transmission (a painful $5K pill to swallow) to junking it. I’m quite attached to it and hate to see it scrapped for a measly $200.00. I’m looking for any tips on replacement of the speed sensor without a full transmission break down or rebuild. Any advice?

I had that problem. The lights in the switches on the drivers' side door stayed on. I discovered that it was a bad gas door switch that caused it. Try disconnecting all the switches from the wiring harness until they go out.
