Manuel RVS Yup. Especially the earlier FSI 2.0T in my opinion. We have a 2008 Passat and we just absolutely love that car and I have done just basic maintenance and small issue repairs over the course of its life. I do my own belt changes, metal impeller water pump, reseal vacuum pump, check follower once a while and some upgraded ignition parts and it purrs like a kitten. It’s 11 years old at this point and I am planning on keeping it for at least another 5-7 years because no one even offers a good wagon hardly anymore that is affordable and fun to drive. Perhaps a Mercedes wagon next. And I will never buy a Subaru wagon, sorry Subaru.

Previous owners had somewhat neglected follower changes on our EOS BPY engine, and there is a new (ish) fuel pump on the engine, but the follower of the same vintage is starting to show some wear and the cam surface shows some wear also. How much wear on the cam fuel pump lobes will fall in the "worn, but acceptable to still operate" zone with follower inspections with each oil change? Based on the pictures of damaged cams I have seen, this appears to be somewhere in the marginally operational (vs obviously fubar) zone.

If the cam is very worn has the oil filter done it's job and protected the engine from all the shavings. This is a question that has bothered me for years. Can some oil filter systems cope with metal in the oil?
@superXwhiteXninja6 жыл бұрын
Andrew Thompson the purpose of all oil filters are primarily to collect metal shavings that collect in the oil as wear happens.
@andrewthompsonuk16 жыл бұрын
superXwhiteXninja but then you get stories of engines being destroyed by the smallest amount of contamination. I think filters can bypass.
@johnferguson72356 жыл бұрын
The manufacturers of the filters keep the data about the performance of their filters TOP SECRET. They won't tell you anything about the filters except that they meet a certain specification which usually involves particles larger than 5 microns and a single pass through the filter or a short cycle. How much of the sub 5 micron size metal particles that are trapped is a mystery. Large particles can get stuck in oil passages or galleys and never reach the filter.
