How to inspect and replace a FSI HPFP and Cam Follower on a MK5 GTI. The high pressure fuel pump and cam follower is a common MK5 FSI failure. Checking the cam follower is basically maintenance. Also failure can cause check engine light codes P0087, P1093, P2293. Today I will show you step by step how to DIY the FSI fuel pump and cam follower. Thanks to FCP EURO and Meyle for sponsoring the MK5 Rusto-Mod project.

Manuel RVS Yup. Especially the earlier FSI 2.0T in my opinion. We have a 2008 Passat and we just absolutely love that car and I have done just basic maintenance and small issue repairs over the course of its life. I do my own belt changes, metal impeller water pump, reseal vacuum pump, check follower once a while and some upgraded ignition parts and it purrs like a kitten. It’s 11 years old at this point and I am planning on keeping it for at least another 5-7 years because no one even offers a good wagon hardly anymore that is affordable and fun to drive. Perhaps a Mercedes wagon next. And I will never buy a Subaru wagon, sorry Subaru.

That exact sensor has failed on my Mk5 GTI in the winter of 2016. After a search on eBay I found out that I had, as mentioned in the video, the old revision, with E, and I ordered the one with K from America, because somehow, no ebay vendors here in Europe had the part. Took 2 weeks to get here, but my engine ran again.

Hi Charles, Big fan. Here's a question for ya regarding my 08 golf gti mk5 hard start issue. 1. Car is parked indoors. First start in the morning, no problem. 2. When driven and parked under hot sun(hot weather), many cranks before it finally starts. The hotter the weather, the harder to start. 3. After the hard start, driven a little bit and parked for an hour or two, hard start returns. Do you know what could be the issue? Lpfp had been replaced. Starter relay been replaced. Lpfp primes. It's been frustrating both for me and my neighbourhood mechanic. Your opinions is very much needed. Thank you very much for your time.

Previous owners had somewhat neglected follower changes on our EOS BPY engine, and there is a new (ish) fuel pump on the engine, but the follower of the same vintage is starting to show some wear and the cam surface shows some wear also. How much wear on the cam fuel pump lobes will fall in the "worn, but acceptable to still operate" zone with follower inspections with each oil change? Based on the pictures of damaged cams I have seen, this appears to be somewhere in the marginally operational (vs obviously fubar) zone.

Good video, I had the follower and pump codes come up on a 1.6 fsi mk5 golf, bfm engine code, p2293 fuel pressure regulator valve and p000A camshaft postponer bank 1 intake, so I had a hole through the follower and the end of the spring was very worn on the fuel pump, I replaced with new follower and a second hand pump, but after a test drive I am still getting the same codes and engine it spluttering, any ideas if this means my cam is gone? I just brought the car and it looks like it had a very new pump on it already but was well worn at the spring, any advice you can offer many thanks!

Humble, I have this same motor and it is clattering like it has a cam chain flopping around in the housing . I have read it is common to make clatter under a few different parts failing. I just watched this video and pulled the follower it looks very clean and well kept I was wondering what else could be making this noise on this type of motor I am not really interested in chasing parts and replacing them if i can find an experienced vet to help in the diagnosis process

Sounds like it's a faulty timing chain tensioner on the back or right side of the engine. The tensioner is known to fail and cause a rattling noise, with catastrophic engine failure if not fixed in time.

Would you happen to have a Premo Code to use at the Online Store FCP ? Also I'm not sure if it's made for the VW 2.0T FSI engine or not but I see Cam Followers with a roller on the end that meets against the Cam, So maybe less Ware & Tare on the Cam , If I can find that type of Cam Follower for the VW FSI 2.0T would you recommend it ? Hey mate Im from Australia, Got a workshop over here I own, We have a MK5 Golf GTI that has had this failure and damaged the camshaft. Do you know of anywhere that does an upgraded or "stage 1" Style camshaft ? Or just a lead for parts suppliers for these vehicles as VW are closed with COVID restrictions in my area Thanks for any info you can supply Shane Mitchell ELITE Brake and Mechanical

Im confused about one thing, I read that this engine has vvt on the intake but the whole variable timing part/variator is mounted on the exhaust cam. How does that work , am i missing something really obvious?

Charles have you ever made a video about the FSI pcv going bad? Seems to also be a common issue with these cars (mine is bad i think 🙄)

So replacing the cam follower and HPFP will save you from a catastrophic engine failure? What if you only change the cam follower? Thanks

You should only really need to replace the cam follower regularly. The hpfp if you're getting codes.

hey man. I'm getting these codes on my MK5 GTI 2.0T DSG STOCK BWA. Engine light is on so scanned and came up with 2 pending codes: P0171 System too Lean Bank 1 and P0441 EVAP System incorrect purge flow.. My car seems to be revving itself on idle slightly, especially in neutral. I'm thinking change the pcv valve and cam follower and do a change of spark plugs. Already done the oil change. My GTI also been drinking 1L oil every month..

Check the plastic "T" fitting with the check valve near the driver side of the intake manifold. That is a common breaking part.

Apologies if this has been asked, can I just lubricate the new follower with oil or does it have to be engine assembly lube?

If the cam is very worn has the oil filter done it's job and protected the engine from all the shavings. This is a question that has bothered me for years. Can some oil filter systems cope with metal in the oil?
@superXwhiteXninja
@superXwhiteXninja 6 жыл бұрын
Andrew Thompson the purpose of all oil filters are primarily to collect metal shavings that collect in the oil as wear happens.

superXwhiteXninja but then you get stories of engines being destroyed by the smallest amount of contamination. I think filters can bypass.

The manufacturers of the filters keep the data about the performance of their filters TOP SECRET. They won't tell you anything about the filters except that they meet a certain specification which usually involves particles larger than 5 microns and a single pass through the filter or a short cycle. How much of the sub 5 micron size metal particles that are trapped is a mystery. Large particles can get stuck in oil passages or galleys and never reach the filter.
