Just an idea, the 95B 4-piston, all-aluminum Brembo caliper used on the base Macan and Audi Q5 are direct fit for the stock calipers of the Golf R and Audi S3. Many people have done the retrofit but there is no detailed write-up or video on it yet. Both calipers can be had for about $500 retail making it a cheap upgrade while shaving off half the weight (from 18.8lbs to 9.4lbs). Would make for an awesome video.

I have a 2020 GLI Autobahn and my dealer here in Southern California were very specific with me on warranty as I kindly asked them questions about it. He told me straight up that if you do a tune and come in for warranty claims, the first thing they do is scan the ecu and look for flashes to make sure it’s factory. Then it’s automatically posted to Volkswagen and they know that your car is no longer covered for drive train warranty. The “Okay’s” are the exhaust (better to put on factory exhaust if you are concerned before going) wheels, and aesthetics really. If you bag it or do springs/coil overs whatever suspension mods, it will void the suspension warranties. He specifically said upgrading brakes and rotors are totally fine as the warranty rarely will ever cover them anyways lol

Dig your Golf R. So addressing your warranty part ~4:00 we have a '15 Audi S3 with APR Stage 1 low torque ECU tune currently. It previously had a Stage 2 high torque tune and DSG tune (also APR) with downpipe from previous owner and it had to goto Audi for service for something unrelated. They voided our warranty for powertrain altogether. So regardless of which dealer we went Audi of America did not do us a solid. And we had flashed it back to stock before bringing it in. We ended up having to replace our turbo and clutch pack (or something like that) out of pocket and it was about $7k.

I have Stage 1 APR tuning on my 2016 R, as I did on my 2012 model, and the GTI that preceded it. Worth every penny. The big difference is that my latest ECM chip was installed by the dealer, and had no effect on warranty. So I don’t need a “stock” setting to use when I take it to the dealer. It stays on all the time. My only regret is that I chose the DSG transmission (also upgraded). It’s butter-smooth on upshifts, but lags on downshifts, and is not quite as fun as the manual. Though the paddle shifters help.

Fantastic info. As a person with an APR stage 2 2017 GTI Sport that I had lemon lawed, TD1 flag does not void your warranty. It can cause you to have certain items denied. This did happen to me, but like you said. Be polite and work with the dealership. I ended up contacting VWoA, received an advocate and she worked with the dealership to warrant a new ECU. That didn’t fix the issue and long story short ended up getting the 2017 GTI Sport replaced with a 2018 GTI SE.

Granted, this is on my Mk7 GLI(2019)... When I first got the car, I didnt have a VCDS but there were a few features I really wanted like the remote windows and disable that annoying auto start stop right away. I bought a cheap wifi/bluetooth OBD adapter off Amazon and subscribed to Carista for a week($10). I was able to enable the remote windows and disable the auto start stop with some simple option clicks. I know the remote windows probably isnt as much of interest to you but the auto start stop is. Also, I do not receive any errors with the auto start stop. It does however show the A circle with a slash through it at the top of my display when I come to a stop. Its the same icon that comes up as if you were running A/C, car warming up, etc. So I believe its an icon that will be there regardless. Anyway, just thought I would let you know as it may be a cheap way to figure out how it can be disabled without errors. Maybe scan the car before and after, then see what was changed in the coding. I havent personally yet as it accomplished what I wanted so I just leave it be. Maybe it will help if you arent able to figure it out or if you have the adapter already, an easy way to just get it done.

@IReahpZz5 жыл бұрын
Neuspeed may be cheap but it will cause issues and if you hammer it a few times you'll go into Limp mode. It's a common issue on the 2.0t and 1.8t gen3 cars. If your gonna go piggy back tune buy a jb4 module since you get more power, customizability and alot less issues and less lag.
@DanielBrownOre4 жыл бұрын
@@IReahpZz Never have gone into limp mode on my gen3 1.8t with latest Neuspeed version that ends in ".15". The key is to not use the +7 mode and stay on the +5 mode with at least 91 octane fuel, preferably more. It also cost $200 used while a JB4 is hard to find for under $400 used with the BT connection. Now, if I had a 2.0 it would be different, but for the 1.8t you can't beat the Neuspeed used for so little!

Hi Charles. Thanks for this list. I got my 2019 Golf R in November and finally got a few of these done. Just got my car back from local shop Cantrell Motorsports. They installed the 25mm anti-sway bar and the skid plate. I "installed" the spare tire kit a month ago or so. Car is pretty much sitting in the garage while we shelter in place (still). I hope to run my car in at least one nearby recreational HPDE this summer, so I had Stoptech SS brake lines installed (along with Motul and Ferodo performance pads). Personally, I think SS-sheathed Teflon lines are essential for any car headed for a track day. I'm hopeful that I can get out this summer, but I'm wary of any kind of public gathering -- social distancing rules notwithstanding. I'm a 7/10ths track day guy, so unless the stock power is completely inadequate, I think I'll avoid a tune for now. Thanks again. Very handy videos and guidance.

OK, Charles. You asked- I'm gonna toss a lawn dart here. Rear hitch. The VW euro/ factory hidden hitch is so.....factory/ OEM/ awesome EXCEPT for the fact that it is just a ball hitch which= towing-which is epic in its own right-but my angle is rear-mounted bike racks. The current champion is the EcoHitch by Torklift Central. But- for me- it comes oh-so-close to perfect, but falls short because you always see the receiver below the fascia. I feel the ultimate, slickest, truly-hidden solution in the US is the Stealth Hitch. Only problem is that they have not yet found a person to blaze the trail for the community and be the prototype vehicle. They are based in Atlanta, so how about you do a video on how you spend a few days with those fine folks and help create the catalog product for the rest of us!?! Btw, their website states that your participation yields a free install and free hitch. And both versions- the trailer-centric version with all the wiring installed and the 2" receiver version for accessories!

One change I made on my Alltrack was the rear 2 outer headrests couldn't stand the tall ones that come on NA cars, the European rear headrests are very similar to the center head rest (low profile) and make a huge difference when looking out the back. Now I have an unobstructed view. I don't have part# but if you like having better visibility get them...they were pricey around $360 for the pair. I know it's not performance related but IMO they were worth it. I want to do a stage one tune and DSG tune (can't stand the low shift points). I would also like to hear a little exhaust note but to get that without drone is a issue. AWE "claims" no drone but local shop that sells and installs said don't and the drone is so bad he's had customers come back and have AWE system removed and this is the" touring" exhaust not the "race". He suggested down pipe instead but that requires stage 2 which I don't want. Techtonics Tuning has a SS system but no reviews on it. Any suggestions? Edit: The very first mod I did was changing the factory springs and shocks to factory Golf "R" springs and shocks I could not stand the too soft floaty feel ride with the stock suspension the Golf "R" is perfect IMO fitment, ride quality, it"s noticeably more firm and sporty in a good way plus lowered it quite nicely, I don't do much if any off-roading so it's basically the same ride height as a "R" I also used the Audi TT rear spring rubber mount.

Awesome video! I hope to get VCDS at some point (and DEFINITELY a stage 1 tune), but the one major thing that bothers me almost more than anything, I have to go through the touchscreen menus to turn off traction control (2016 Golf S). I want to add a physical button and code it.

I think there is a kit for that.

Charles - fantastic video. I am 71 and have never owned an automatic from VW bugs to an LS7 69 Chevelle to 3 TDI's- I was thrilled to get an all wheel drive Alltrack with a 6 speed (I was always hoping for it to be a TDI). I basically love the car but the REV Lag makes me feel like I have never driven stick before. Can an OBD 11 remove the lag?? Please tell me yes. Also - I installed a whiteline rear sway bar that has 2 settings - unfortunately the softer setting does not fit the sway bar link! The stiffer setting is too stiff and has resulted in clunking noises no matter what adjustments I make. I will try the H & R . Can you do a video on the transmission and front diff service? Thanks for all of your Vids- much appreciated

HumbleMechanic Oof, I just looked over the Atlas parts for that system. The toughest and most expensive part I didn’t think about is the locking/closing motor that sucks the hatch in. I assume the interior trim might be shaped differently there too.

Great video and i just got a MK7.5R and have watched a lot of your vids on the car :) Just wondering if you considered a front LCA upgrade (to increase caster and camber) or camber tops as the car seems to come with more neg camber in the rear than the fronts which i assume is the standard "safe" setup. I will definitely be getting a stage 1 ecu/dsg tune and rear swaybar upgrade but also want to dial in the alignment to get more front end grip. Cheers :)

I have a (Canadian) '18 R and OBDEleven and I used this method for disabling start/stop, and it works perfectly: Disable Start/Stop Select Control unit 19 Adaptation Start Stop Limit voltage Value=12 You still see the disabled start/stop symbol in the upper instrument cluster when you come to a stop, but there are no other warnings at all.
@HumbleMechanic5 жыл бұрын
That’s the one I don’t want to see.

10:25 I’d like the opposite in my Australian MK7.5 R. I find that the overlay obscures the reverse camera view. Can’t wait to see if you manage to fit that power lift gate. That’d be handy.

It shows up automatically without pressing the button?

It’s funny with the change you made to the reverse camera display. My Australian spec car does that as standard and it drives me mad. I’d love to stop that little display popping up!

I found it; I have VCDS. I went into 5f and then long code helper and click on square for byte 16. You're looking for 'Byte_16_legal_rvc'. I have the older connector/software so my page does not show the actual option; However, it is there according to a discussion I found in a forum. My fix was to manually change the code from 1001111 to 0001111. The details are here: forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?8927457-MK7-5-Golf-R-VCDS-Tweaks/page29

Hi man, love the vids just picked up my 19 R yesterday in Augusta. Small scratch on the door but other than that love this car. I have one issue I need to fix. Is there a way or hack to disable the active cruise control ? It never does what I would do so it needs to go. Unfortunately the salesman incorrectly informed me that the menus can turn it off. Im even open to adding another 3rd party cruise control to get rid of this and I understand from one of you other video you can turn things off through the ECU. I would even be open to turning all the driver aids off if this solves the problem.
@HumbleMechanic4 жыл бұрын
You have to shut it off but then you disable cruise. I’m sure there is a way but that’s not info I feel comfortable teaching people about.
