Masking tip. When masking off the machined surfaces (raised bosses specifically). Forgo the razor blade. Apply tape extending beyond all edges. Take hammer and tap along all edges. This cuts the tape leaving a perfect edge. Much faster with better quality. POR. Great when it works. I have much better results using automotive base clear, or even enamel. You can also more accurately match the sheen as I don't care for the gloss POR produces either.

POR15 is good to 450 degrees. Good for the block but not heads. If your block temps reach anywhere near 450 degrees, you have other problems. for the heads, POR15 has a high temp paint good to 1200.

im pretty impressed that the entire kit is only showing as about 65 dollars (us) on amazon. and if you are doing an engine of similar size to the vr6 you were playing with, id bet you could almost do 4 engines worth. ill be using this kit for sure when i do my aba build(s) because of the cost, and the relative ease of the procedure. by the way, thats that little 6-popper going in when you put it back together?

@HumbleMechanic
@HumbleMechanic 7 жыл бұрын
I just ordered a few measuring tools to we can be sure we catalog as much as we can. I am out of town this weekend and most of next week. I am hoping to start that process next weekend. I have all the parts to assemble other than cams. The cylinder head is ready to go I am not totally sure if I am going to paint that or not. I have the "aluminum" color to paint it with, but it was cleaned extremely well, and I am not worried about rust. From there is is about the small details of the reassembly. If I just did the job, it would be a simple 1 day job. But since I am documenting it, it will take longer. :)

Red is a minimum 20 to the wheels, obviously other mods (such as stickers, underglow lights, exhaust tips, etc) will increase the gains of the paint. Hondas will always see 10% more gain from paint and stickers than any other make.

Rattle cans like you get in the parts store is the bottom end. Next step up is 2k urethane in a spray can. Once you start spraying you have maybe a week tops before the paint fully activates in the can rendering the contents useless.

charles, i know you said you wanted to go OEM look but why not go with a silver color or something that makes leaky fluids stand out a bit more?
@HumbleMechanic
@HumbleMechanic 7 жыл бұрын
Well a few reasons 1) I am not too worried about fluids leaking. Every gasket will have been replaced 2) If I do end up with a leak, finding oil leaks is actually pretty easy. 3) Worst case I can add dye to the leaking fluid and trace with a UV light. I hope that doesn't read like I am being an ass about that question. I am really not. it was something I considered for sure. Either way, most of what you see in the video will be totally covered. I may do some small bits in the engine a cooler color. I will figure that out when it's time. :)

A lot of the times the gloss goes away when it fully dries like house paint. Your just seeing the shiny liquid before it evaporates. I like to do a test paint on something and wait for it to dry to see how its going to really turn out. My mom freaked over a red paint that was too glossy in her house after the painters left. I told her to wait before calling and yelling at them about using the wrong paint. Sure enough by the 2nd or 3rd day the gloss was gone. The more you know eh?

This has held its gloss really well over a year later. it's probably more dirty than anything.

I guess your machine shop just used a block washer? it just uses heated water sprayed by jets as the block rotates on a turntable. back in the 80's, when I went to tech school and used my local machine shop, they had a huge tank full of water and lye, heated almost to boiling. we submerged all the parts, block, heads, oil pan, timing and valve covers, intake if steel, for two or three days. it stripped off EVERYTHING, paint, grease, you name it. all that needed done after was the usual scrubbing of the oil galleries with solvent then a good wash with tide detergent and hot water, then blow dried with compressed air. I don't think shops use the lye solution anymore due to environmental reasons.

Be safe out there kids! Don't use kitchen supplies you actually eat with for mixing solvents! Paint mixing cups and the like work great, or buy dedicated measuring cups for in your shop!

this is kind of funny. Automotive painters go to school for at least 40 hours to learn how to paint your car . but will show you how to do it in just 11 minutes. * individual results May Vary.
