I'd love to see someone mythbust "cold air" intakes on the BPY. I'm very much a skeptic. The engine cover on the BPY is annoying and ugly, but I can't imagine this aftermarket setup is actually an improvement over a stock air box in good condition. So far all of the recommendations to run them seem to come from somebody who makes or sells a cold air intake.

@Joe_Rebel4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, most cases you'll raise IAT and not any real flow improvement the turbo or tune can take advantage of. Nice sound though, even though you can remove the sound deadening in the airbox and TIP to get the same thing.
@Joe_Rebel4 жыл бұрын
@Moto Guzzi No, higher IATs reduce hp, *real* CAI do increase hp but the actual intake is down by the bumper where cold air is flowing in. Any pod filter visible in the engine bay is going to reduce hp due to warmer air in the intake. You can argue this but, the fact is if you can see the pod filter when you open the hood; it'll suck in warmer air.
@Joe_Rebel4 жыл бұрын
@Moto Guzzi Yeah, I still have the factory airbox on my 1.8t and it's making 40%-50% more power over stock. Usually a higher flow panel filter, intake pipe, and removing any sound baffles will be more than enough for more flow.
@Joe_Rebel4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I don't use any K&N or oiled filters in any of my vehicles, I personally run an AFE dry panel filter which flows better without sacrificing much of the OEM filters cleaning ability. I can clean and reuse it and not need to worry about oil residue on my sensitive MAF. I believe that OEM parts are the way to go as well, if there's an upgrade that can be done using OEM parts from a newer or higher end model vehicle, then I would go that route. Like using 2.0TFSI coils for their stronger spark instead of the regular 1.8T coils. When I go aftermarket it has to be a good quality engineered product that will actually provide benefits. In any turbo car, intake upgrades are very limited on how much you gain in general, you should really be doing them for better throttle response and turbo spool.

Shame the new filter can't filter out all the hot underhood air. I was surprised at how disappointed I was when you actually called it a "cold air intake." 0:11
@HumbleMechanic4 жыл бұрын
What’s the preferred vernacular?
@aussiebloke6094 жыл бұрын
"Hot air intake" is probably more accurate...and perhaps a casual vernacular of "sports air intake" or simply "air intake" if one doesn't want to specify. But I fail to see how this could be called "cold" - the heat shield is only really good against direct radiant heat and does little about the regular underhood hot air that it'll be sucking in. Factory systems usually take air from ahead of the radiator/condenser for a good reason - it's where the air is coolest - and they are sealed once they pass behind those heat exchangers. And there's really no reason a quality aftermarket system couldn't do the same (only more efficiently) if they wanted. But this is much cheaper, and so long as people continue buy a semi-engineered product, they'll continue supplying one. /end rant
@aussiebloke6094 жыл бұрын
PS: All that said, this is still probably better than having the intake run through that plastic cover where it will gather _all_ the heat from the top of the engine, so it's likely still a net win in this car. Just wish they'd do a better job with these systems.
@simonjohnson36414 жыл бұрын
I've seen worse kits than this one - at least the air filter is at the front of the engine bay and not at the back (just Google "Corsa air intake" if you want to see a really bad example). Besides, this kit can't be any worse than the OEM setup, especially when it is broken - who at VW Group thought combining an engine cover with the air filter was a good idea? That said, the video where temperature is measured sounds like it will be interesting in terms of hard data on the effect of fitting an aftermarket kit on air temperature.
@sweis124 жыл бұрын
Can you take a look at the S&b intake for mk6 tdis? It seems to be the best one but im not sure if it is really even better than the stock intake. It seems to completly sealed off from the engine bay and only get fresh air from the grill.

@lorddragoono4 жыл бұрын

@HumbleMechanic4 жыл бұрын
That is a great question. The short answer is no. The more accurate answer is possibly. So these intakes can slightly change the amount of air in to the engine. But the ECM can make small adjustments for that. So no need for a tune in most cases.

I have a question: I picked up a mk5 the other day, there is a rubber hose that leads from just left and up from where the intake pipe meets the turbo and runs along the left side of the oem cover and meets a 3 outlet housing in the front of the engine, that hose connects in basically in front of the oil dipstick. On my car it is blocked off by a red cap with a screw on the end at the back and at the connection in front of the dipstick. What is that hose for and is that part of some sort of modification or maybe was it just removed and blocked off to be serviced and never put back on? I bought the car with jumped timing, so I haven't had it running yet, thanks!

Have the very same intake in my Jetta 2.0TFSI Stage1. Gain is marginal but hearing the sounds from the diverter valve and spooling turbo is priceless! Looks pretty good too after spending an hour or so detailing the engine bay. One note of caution: the silicone sleeves and reducer are NOT reinforced and overtightening the clamps will chew right through them

Its not really that hard to insall. Other intakes should be similar to this to

Why do they put so much plastic garbage on top? Selling point? Such a PITA to keep stock. Never understood "engine cover:" Marge, look at my engine, it looks sooo pretty. Lol Hate engine pretty covers.

That poor car engine bay needs a pressure washing! 😞

It needed a lot of things. Ahhaha

No race car....I would strip the interior, and add a roll cage if needed,tires and brakes before I did a CAI if making a race car was the goal....wouldn't even pop the hood unless I had to....just saying.

Not a race car for sure. LOL We did this as much as a repair as for race cars LOL

And now you will have very funny readings from your AFM. If you move AFM even 1/10 inch from the factory location inside the pipe, or this new pipe has a 5% more/less diameter you will have completely wrong AFM readings. What does it mean? For example, the load parameter in your ECU will be too low, and you'll have too high ignition timing and because of that pinging, excessive timing retardation, etc. Same situation with the target fuel AFR (especially during component protection in KFLBTS map). Factory air filter setup doing good even on Mk6 R with a chip, and its more than enough on the tiny k03 turbo, even if you pull every lb/min out of it.)))

Maybe. I’ve seen it go either way. I’ve seen Fuel trims get way sideways from intakes. And I’ve seen it make no real difference. You are right that tweaking with MAF and filter positioning can make the reading whack.

this design doesn't look like it has the best fitment
@HumbleMechanic4 жыл бұрын
The fitment was pretty consist with lost intakes I’ve installed

@@HumbleMechanic to clarify, I mainly meant the last elbow pipe the filter connects to. The rest of it looks good, but it seems like it's tweaking that isolation bushing and the pipe jams against the battery box. but maybe thats just how it was supposed to be 🤷♂️

side note, I have a mk4 r32, and the aem intake that came with it when I got the car years ago recently tore off the stud it mounts to from the factory airbox mount. I think the accordion tube behind the maf shrank over time and put a lot of strain on the attachment point. super annoying
