Test 1 was obvious. Others with so much gain were more difficult

Richard L same for me. With increasing gain it became harder for me to tell the guitars apart. First test was easy, 2nd test was basically 50/50 for me between the P90 and the Humbucker. In the third test I only got the humbucker right. I was actually quite certain that the 2nd guitar in the last test was the single coil, as it definitely sounded like the least saturated one to me.

Even funnier here. Test 1 was the easiest in my opinion, Test 2 I failed completely and Test 3 I got everything right like in Test 1.

Yes - the higher the gain the bigger difference it makes. I was really surprised to hear that my favorite in all three was the P90.

P90s really are great for tone and they have enough output to make even vintage amps breakup easily enough. If you are getting to much gain, roll off the vol knob on your guitar. As players we don't use our tone and volume enough. Set your amp when your guitar is at 8 vol and 6-7 tone...then you have two boosts available at your finger tips.

They're fantastic, aren't they? So versatile! So many magnet and winding combinations. The others have those same capabilities, but imo, with less effect.

i put $30 p90's in my custom build and haven't touched my other guitars since. sounds so rich and makes the strings almost feel more alive under my fingertips.

I never considered myself to have any particular talent for distinguishing between pickups like this, but I got them all correct. Seems easy because they were all very different. Single Coil = bright, Humbucker = mud, and the P90 = Rich lows and crisper highs, but not the really crisp highs of the single coil. P90 all the way, for me.

Humbucker for anything with gain (obviously for noise, but mostly for tone) and single coils for cleans. That's how I view it.

I could pick out the single coil every time. With gain, the other two were hard to separate. Easier on the 2nd time through though. I hear a "muddier" sound from the humbucker. I dig this video! I had always wondered about the difference in the P90. I really like it.

This was super informative! I especially liked that you played the same excerpt for all three, and didn't give any personal opinions or even make any comments on the sounds and timbres at the end. It's amazing how suggestability in videos like this can often make the ear hear things that are more based on someone else's opinion and preference. This video gave me a clear example of all three while allowing me to make my own decisions and observations on which tones I leaned towards. I found this useful, even though I got all three tests right. I love blind tests because they shed light on the superstitions surrounding electric guitars and their various bits. The internet will have been an eye-opener for many people - so long as they were prepared to have their eyes opened - thanks to comparison tests like this. The takeaways for me were: these pickups have distinct characteristics, but there is bo 'best' type; overdrive and distortion tend to override the differences between pickup types; and close listening to isolated guitars on headphones is an artificial test, and no test of how a pickup will sound in real music.

Thanks, Darrell. That was one of the easiest difference tests I've heard. I have been thinking for a long time that I want to build a Tele style guitar w/P90's - I am convinced now. I have a tele with p90s and I always thought "okay, have I purchased the right pickup configuration?" After this video, I am more than happy with my little tele. Of course other pickups are interesting to have if you thing about sound flavor. But for an all-around tone, I have finally proven to myself this broader range is real. Awesome video! Got the first 2 tests right and as a surprise for me it was pretty easy, because often I don't even have a clue what kind of pickup I am hearing. But in the 3 test I was so convinced that the second guitar was the single-coil. I was completely shocked. Thinking about getting a P90 in the Bridge, now. Thanks a lot Darrel for the comparison 😉

Got all of them right! My main guitar for years has been an SG with P90's so I recognized those characteristics immediately, and from that point it was just distinguishing between a single coil and a humbucker which of course is a piece of cake

Since getting an Epiphone Casino, I've fallen in love with the P-90 sound. It's a nice fit between harsh singles and the muddy humbuckers. Looking towards LP/SG copy with P-90s.

Seems like alot failed the second comparison and I did too. It definitely surprised me. First test was rather simple to hear, the second gave me a scratcher and third one I felt kind of confident in but still on the skeptical side. Good show ! I like the P90 sound

I nailed the first sound test even with my $20 in-ear headphones. I was kinda hoping I wouldn't hear too much of a difference between all 3, but it is way obvious. Especially the single coil (I play a Strat). For test #2, I had a harder time distinguishing the P90 and humbucker. They both sounded different, but I couldn't figure out which was which. Test 3 was easy peasy. You can especially hear the distinctive string attack in the single coil on the bridge.

Test 1 2 and 3 it was obvious which was the humbucker. Test 3 was the only one where I mixed up the p90 and single coil. Really love the sound of p90s. Definitely an underrated pickup option.

I guessed them all correctly, which impressed myself. Clean its all about the mids. Gained it's about the treble and low-end around 150hz, the punchy frequencies.

I would love to see you review the Godin Montreal Premier LTD or Summit Classic Convertible with Seymour Duncan P Rails that allow you to switch among the three types (also they're Canadian, like us ;-) ).

Great test. I have become obsessed with P90s as of late. I had an Epiphone Casino but I let it go because I had put it on a pedastal before I ever owned one and it could never live up to that. My dumb fault. Thinking of getting some Seymour Duncan Phat Cats and dropping them in a used Epiphone SG with an Obsidian Pro-Wired Traditional Vintage 60's harness.

I think the true test of a pup is playing it clean just before any break up without any effects.

I tend to agree. Once you start putting on effects, you're hearing the effects as much as the pick ups.

The first one I picked each pickup straight up. The second one I got wrong, and the third I could tell easily, but only after hearing all 3. In isolation, I could easily have been fooled! This will show my strat fanboyness, but it just illustrates to me how versatile a strat is. Wind in bass frequencies through tools at your disposal e.g. tone knobs on amps and guitar, pedals etc, and you can probably fool most people into thinking even a vintage single coil sound is a humbucker, at least with overdrive/high gain!

Like many others, I felt that gain was the great equalizer. The first test was very easy to hear the difference, but in the second and third the P-90 and humbucker sounded very similar.

I only made one mistake: I said P90 instead of humbucker and vice versa once. The single coil is really the only one I was 100% sure of, humbuckers and p90s sound more simmilar and I could surely tell which one was which only in the clean test.

I was 3/3 for the first two tests, and waffled on the single/p90 for test 3 but ultimately guess wrong on those two. What it really reinforced for me is that yes, my order of liking pickups in general is P90>SC>Humbucker. Just as a blanket thing, but I love P90s. Just got a tele with em a week ago, as a matter of fact. And yes, I love the comparisons, both blind and non. In a perfect world, you'd have a bass-playing counterpart whose content mirrored your own.

Hey Darrell! The test that I would really like to see is Les Paul with P90s vs. Les Paul with coil split. Epiphone makes the ProBucker Les Paul with coil split pickups and it would be interesting to see how the split coil compares to the P90s.

The speaker in your amplifier has a Noise. Most people can not hear this but it's like an inefficient speaker noise. Very evident at Minute 2:08 ( sorry to tell you this ) Your demo was really good. Thank you very much.

Another comparison again without any boring grandstanding party piece riffs. From my experience the one thing that instantly defines a single coil from a humbuckers is the totally different sound when playing a chord through a clean amp.

Blind tests are really good at showing you what you prefer, perhaps in spite of deeply-held beliefs about tone. I thought I'd come out of this liking P90s but it turns out it was an even split between humbuckers and single coil for me.

All right, got the first 2 test right, but messed up on the last test, had the single coil and P90 other way around. Personally I'm humbuckers guy, so that's what I will go with. Another interested test could be hot single coil vs low output single coil, hot p90 vs low output p90 or hot humbucker vs low output humbucker

I was surprised how similar they all were and had trouble hearing any meaningful difference. Been playing guitar for 34 years. Maybe I should try golf? Great test, by the way, thanks for doing it. EDIT: I went back and listened to each test a few more times (and I couldn't remember which guitar was which, so it was still a "blind" test). I was able to hear a difference between one of the guitars and the other two in the first two tests. It turned out I could hear the single coil as being different (and I preferred it both times). Test 3 - forget it! I have listened over and over and can't hear any difference. It wouldn't surprise me if you told us it was the same guitar each time!

I got them all correct! On your last test I didn't do very well at all but this time I knew the difference. I love the p90 sound as it has, imo, the best of both the single col's characteristics and the humbucker's. I don't use single coils and I don't generally like them. I had a bad experience with a cheap, unwaxed (as I soon found out) single coil guitar and it's poisoned my opinion somewhat. I love hearing them when other people play but I find myself drawn to HBs and P90s for my own playing. I think my favourite tone is a p90 with just the tiniest bit of gain so that it doesn't break up until you drive it with harder playing or adding volume. If I just want to sit and noodle and be taken away by the sound then that's the setting I am going to go for.

I could tell which which in clean. They all were good in all three test. It's a load of squit that you must have the right pickup for the kinda music you play.

I liked the P90 clips the best. But leaving the amp EQ the same for each pickup isn't the best test because whatever the EQ is set at could have been more favorable to one of the pickups and detrimental to the others. Perhaps better would be to EQ the amp differently for each pickup which is what someone would do IRL.

It's pretty easy for me to identify the humbucker in the listening tests. It sounds huge compared to the others. Not so easy for me to differentiate between SC and P90.

I never held any guitar other than my cheap single coil ones. I got all the test right by getting familiar through lots of videos here on YT. Basically. Sweet tone/Bright tone/ Single coils Fat and rich distortion but muted single notes= Humbuckers. Somewhere in betweens are the p90s.

I've always preferred the sound of single coils, the muffled sound that comes from a humbucker/p90 doesn't appeal to me so much. I got every test correct which was cool. I got every one of the tests which is cool. If it has a more pronounced sound in the upper mid frequencies it's gonna be single coils and with the humbucker and p90's it's whether which one is more bass heavy (humbucker being the more bass heavy pickup). I far prefer single coil pickups, however it's frustrating that I haven't found a noiseless single coil pickuo, that really captures the true tone of a single coil without the hum.

Kieran Sweeden I've heard good stuff about lace sensors, even clapton uses them. Phillip McKnight said that he saw a new company that was making true single coils with no hum at summer NAMM

Kieran Sweeden I tried a lot and came to the conclusion that there is always some kind of concession when you're going noiseless. That being said, Joe Bardens are the best humbucking single coils I've tried and they still sound 90% single coil.

I believe that's a Seymour Duncan P-rail, yeah? Not sure how close they are to a true P-90, as the construction is necessarily different. P-90 has a wider coil, which allows it to be wound hotter without having to use thinner wire. That means it can be quite hot without losing articulation or brightness. I believe that few pickup manufacturers compensate for this in their humbucker-sized P-90 designs.

the last test shows that the frequency outputs are about the same at each level..but that the gibson has better sustain..were the two guitars other than the gibson bolt on necks?

Such a great video! the comparison is very useful...IT's a pity that almost no model have the "versatility" to have all three sort of pick up.! The last frecuency graph is also very instructive!!! Does have P90 more sustain than the others or it is just a "guitar construction effect" ? Regards!
