Hume AI
Founded by leading emotion scientists and artificial intelligence researchers, Hume AI is a research lab and technology company that aims to pave the way for an ethical, human-centric future for technology that understands how we express ourselves.
So much of human communication-in person, text, audio, or video-is shaped by emotional expression. These cues allow us to attend to each other’s well-being. The Hume AI Platform provides the experimentally derived datasets, models, and APIs needed to ensure that technology, too, is guided by empathy and the pursuit of human well-being.
The Hume AI Platform can be applied to almost any application that has language, speech, images, or video of people. We offer a spectrum of models of nonverbal behavior and psychometrics that are complementary to large language models, offering a new window into the half of human communication that isn’t explicitly represented in words. Our APIs are provided for purposes of (1) scientific research and (2) the development of applications that respond to human expressive behaviors in keeping with ethical guidelines and scientific best practices.
Models
Currently, our models measure:
Speech prosody, or the non-linguistic tune, rhythm, and timbre of speech, which spans at least 18 distinct dimensions of meaning.
Emotional language, or the emotional tone of transcribed text, along 53 dimensions.
Facial expressions, including subtle facial movements often seen as expressing love or admiration, awe, disappointment, or cringes of empathic pain, which span at least 28 distinct dimensions of meaning.
Vocal bursts, including laughs, sighs, huhs, hmms, cries and shrieks (to name a few), which span at least 24 distinct dimensions of meaning.
These behaviors are complex and multifaceted. To learn more, read about the science behind our models or visit our API reference.
Used responsibly, expressive communication is integral to a wide range of technologies capable of advancing the greater good. It can help us build healthier social networks. It can train digital assistants to respond with nuance to our present state of mind-to how we say something rather than simply what we say. It can inform technologies that let animators bring relatable characters to life, apps that work to improve mental health, and communication platforms that enhance our empathy for others. It can even be used to create entirely new experiences, from new kinds of art to personalized VR worlds, optimized for specific emotions.
Ultimately, what you build is up to you, but feel free to explore the examples on our Playground and keep in mind our app review process.
Facial expression is the most well-studied modality of expressive behavior, but the overwhelming focus has been on six discrete categories of facial movement that capture less than 30% of what typical facial expressions convey (and the scientifically useful, but outdated, Facial Action Coding System). Recent studies reveal over 28 distinct dimensions of facial expression (Cowen & Keltner, 2020; Cowen et al., 2021; Brooks et al., 2022).
Hume’s Facial Emotional Expression Model generates 48 outputs encompassing the 28+ dimensions of meaning that people distinguish in facial expression. These 48 outputs also encompass other, alternative conceptualizations for the sake of interpretation and alignment across our different models. As with every model, the labels for each dimension are proxies for how people tend to label the underlying patterns of behavior. They should not be treated as direct inferences of emotional experience.
Hume’s FACS 2.0 Model is a new generation automated facial action coding system (FACS). With 55 outputs encompassing 26 traditional actions units (AUs) and 29 other descriptive features (e.g., smile, scowl), FACS 2.0 is even more comprehensive than manual FACS annotations, and is even less biased by factors such as age.
Our facial expression models are packaged with face detection and work on both images and videos. Further details can be found in the API reference.
Speech emotional intonation (prosody) reliably conveys at least 18 distinct dimensions of meaning (Brooks et al., 2022; Tzirakis et al., 2022).
Speech prosody is not about the words you say, but the way you say them. It is distinct from language (words) and from non-linguistic vocal utterances.
