Hellfire is considered to be Disney's darkest song. I personally love it. Frollo is the one Disney villain that no one talks about these days but should.

Same here. Frollo deserves more credit as a villain, in both the animated movie and musical. Most Disney villains you don't really have to worry about in the real world, but a man who sees himself above those he's supposed to help and abuses his position of power is sadly pretty common.

You don’t have to rely on just shouting the line to get the emotion across. The vocals follows the song in respect to what is written, and you add the emotion by changing the quality of your voice as well as inflection. I also don’t think the shouting fits the emotion Frollo is feeling as he is asking for forgiveness while trying to remove the blame (even if he continues to blame everyone but himself). The rhythm at the end is too lackadaisical since Frollo is very strict in nature and attempting to remain “free from sin” (again hypocritical throughout). I don’t mean to point this at the actor; I have no idea his story, but I think the director could have done better here 🫤

The song is the moment when frollo acknowledges his weakness to lust, and he feels his pious self righteousness battling his human desires, which put him in the same class as the common sinner. This is breaking him, and that his lust is for a gypsy makes it even worse, and he feels that she is using her evil wiles to seduce and manipulate him. This song represents him snapping, and standing with one foot in heaven and one in hell, unsure of what direction he wants to go in. He prays for forgiveness yet begs for his desires to be fulfilled. This young man portrayed that instability in a unique way and I liked that he didn’t just cover the song the same way as in the movie. He gave it that emotion and instability that frollo felt. Good job.

I would be critical because his voice range is out of place for this song, a bass/baritone is meant to sing this song not a tenor. The tone has to be rich and desperate, I have recorded this with my music teacher and was told that using one's personal experience can amplify the feeling.

The fact that this is a high school performance is really impressive. The dude has a good voice but I wish he had more emotion and he moved more. For example during the lyric "It is the gypsy girl who set this flame" He could have pointed at the audience and looked around a bit. But yeah I just wish they added more motion and emotion. It's kind of awkward with him just standing there.

I get this but I also think it must be very difficult to control your voice in a song like this while moving around. Low notes require precision and breath control. They’re not professionals, but even then, I think they absolutely nailed this. I couldn’t believe this was a school production.

@@youtubegirl_1974 well, I'm in a little musical group and we play at this time Dracula and hairspray and I have to sing some really deep notes while moving. For me personally it is far more difficult to sing them while standing still then moving. And the fact that I'm most of the time hold my breath anyway and my lungs are trained to contain a certain amount of air while I'm moving. Also little Funfact: our choreograph would never allow us to stand still while we have to show emotions. We made to hellfire a just for fun choreo in which I was frollo because I am the only one who can sing deep in our group. I had to run from one stage side to the other during the "It's not my fault, I'm not to blame" part then go back in the center of it "it is the gypsy girl, the witch who sent the flame" and pointing in the back but must look in the audience and run to the other stage side "it's not my fault if in God's plan" only to be back in center to fall on my knees and pray for "he made the devil so much stronger than a man" all while singing

So, I just discovered this version. I was blown away. I went on a binge of watching every version I could find of this song and I've come to one conclusion. This is the best version, including better than the original. The emotion, the humanity, it's so perfect. I really believe he's trying to pray away and justify his lustful feelings that are forbidden, no other version gives you the hint that he's desperate and praying. I also love the part where he blames everything but himself, including God. This emphasis is missed in all other versions. All his values and morals he holds so deeply are coming crushing down upon him, all because of this 1 woman, and he deeply believes what the consequences are. She is his undoing, no matter how good he thinks he was until this point, this is why he does what he does in the rest of the show. It's so thought provoking like no other version. Well done.

I forgot an idea I had before, it just hides somewhere in my head lol :D. But seeing this performance I thought some emotional elements are really inspiring for my villain! Also random fact: Reverse to Frolo, my character allows every belief since he became lord over his land, for in his childhood his village was wiped out for "wrong belief". I just became aware of this coincidence! :D

In retrospect, and after some consideration, I personally think Frollo is without question the best villain in any Disney movie. His motivations are extremely down to Earth, his descent into darkness is exceptionally well paced. There is nothing fictional about his actions, nothing that makes you go "this couldn't have happened". He is depicted to be hated throughout the entire film, but in the end, the very last scene he appears, I feel nothing but pity for him. This is on of the most underrated films of all time, in my humble opinion.

The choice of Hellfire being sung along with the Confiteor was nice as the two clashed together where Hellfire is about shifting blame, while as the Confiteor is about accepting fault. Every sentence of the first half was like an objection to Frollo's words.
