Today we visit Liss Cemetery and church, on a freezing cold but dry day.
On our walk, we find a beautiful Mausoleum with an open door so we can peep inside. at least one coffin was visible.
Liss Church, Church Of Ireland.
Detached former Church of Ireland church, built c.1820, with three-bay nave, three-stage tower to south and vestry to north. Situated within its own grounds. The church is no longer in use. Pitched slate roof with terracotta ridge tiles and chimneystack over northern gable. Random coursed stone walls with tooled stone plinth course. String courses to tower with pinnacles and crenellations. Crenellations to parapet of vestry. Pointed-arched window openings to nave with Y-tracery and diamond-paned glazing bars. Diamond-shaped window openings with hoodmouldings to central stage of tower. Pointed-arched louvred openings to belfry with hoodmouldings. Square-headed window opening to vestry with tooled stone surround, hoodmoulding and diamond-paned windows. Pointed-segmental chancel window with Y-tracery. Pointed-arched door opening to tower with tooled stone surround, hoodmoulding, timber blind tracery panelled double doors and stone threshold. Pointed-arched door opening to vestry with timber battened door. Church set within graveyard with variety of stone grave markers. Enclosed private burial plot to west of church, bounded by random coursed stone wall with tooled coping and accessed though flat-arched portal opening with wrought-iron gate. The tower of church is flanked by sweeping wrought-iron railings set on a tooled stone plinth with gates, which bound graveyard to south.
The Castle style Mausoleum holds the remains of William Wellington Bailey. He was a Rubber Merchant and Company Director. Late of Plassey House, Limerick. He passed away at 114 Lower Bagott St, Dublin. He was aged 57. He died of Bright's disease. The funeral was to the family burial ground at Liss Cemetery.
The son of Daniel Bailey, a landowner. He lived in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) and Malay from 1875 to 1906 when he returned to Ireland. In Ceylon and Malay, he was engaged in coffee, cocoa and rubber plantations. He amassed a huge fortune from rubber. In 1906, he returned from Asia and purchased Plassey estate, where he owned and trained race horses. In 1908, his horses won 20 races, winning him over £1,865.
He was survived by his wife Blanche.
He left £368,582 in his will, the equivalent of £39 million in 2015.

I can't believe that church is abandoned! The upkeep on the grounds: the grass looks beautiful, and I know my hedges, those are in perfect condition, and I love the crunchy red leaves! What a shame we don't know more. Maybe they combined attendance with another newer church but still bury there and keep it up. That wooden coffin was in beautiful condition. Thank you for the peek! That was a treat! Hope you both are doing well! Yes go get some tea or coffee! All my best! ♥️🙏

Beautiful as usual. I love old churches and cemeteries. How sad that the church is abandoned. I remember growing up in the 60/70’s, my father had us in Church every Sunday. Big family, almost taking up one entire row. Even when we’d go camping, Sunday morning meant Church, before packing up,to go home. I remember the front of the Church had a wall to wall almost floor to ceiling window and the view was so amazing, made it hard to concentrate on the mass. ❤️🙏❤️

Before I began watching, I wasn't aware of the "Old World" having such a widespread use of the lead liners within the traditional wood. Makes one wonder how many past craftsmen had prematurely helped themselves into their own creations, via lead poisoning over their many active years.

@@LarsonPetty Good question. I know it helps preserve the body. That’s why they do it. Queen Elephant coffin was lead lined. The radium girls were buried in lead lined caskets because of radiation. This sounds like a good to look up. I’m curious home often lead poisoning occurred.

Hi Sue, Iam Darren from Australia and I just wanted to thank you for your amazing videos and the history behind them.... You are very lucky to live in such a beautiful country, I also love the accent it brings back many fond memories.... I was an on-site construction manager and worked in very desolate places in the Australian outback.... A few of the young lads working for me were from Ireland and some of the hardest workers I had, the only thing was they work hard and play hard 😂 They love to drink and fight no surprise when you working in desert like conditions 7 days a week for months at a time, I was good with that as long as they were at the work truck at 5.30 am to go to work in the morning..... Those boys never missed a day, I miss them a lot hard working hard drinking and very respectful.... They made living in the desert actually fun with loads of laughs and bonding..... Sorry to rave on 😂 Cheers Darren...

@Serenity Sue You'll be glad to know that William Wellington Bailey was not a slave owner. Slavery was abolished in Ceylon in 1844. In Malaya the British were instrumental in having slavery abolished where in fact, owning slaves was a matter of prestige and an indication of the wealth of Malay chiefs. Consequently, they didn't take kindly to British intentions of stopping slavery and several British officials were murdered by them before it was finally abolished.

Thank you for the tour of the lovely cemetery and church. My guess as to where the bones came from. He had family buried in the ground behind the mausoleum. Sometimes caskets rot, collapse and bones will work their way to the surface. Maybe they put them in the mausoleum for safekeeping instead of further disturbing a grave.

I did notice that the bone was cut. I wonder how that happened. Here in America in the older cemeteries they poke a steel rod into the ground and if nothing stops it's travel down, they re-sale the grave and dig it up for the new dead. I was really shocked. They also have a law in place in Pennsylvania that if there hasn't been a burial in the cemetery for 20 years the land can be sold, and the graves dug up. A church can do the same to create more space in the graveyard. So much for expecting to rest in peace. I've seen the coffins loaded onto trucks (after sitting on the side of the road for two weeks) as they riffled through them for mementoes and whisked off to God knows where. This is the truth as God is my witness. Loved your video BTW. Wish they were taping these in Herefordshire and Shropshire.

Thank you very much for taking us there on such a very cold day. I hope you both didn't catch colds. I used to love the winter and being cold. Snuggling up in slippers and warm dressing gown. Now I'm growing older and have aches and pains so I don't like winter at all. Sue please take care and thank you so much 💖💖💐💐☕☕🍪🍪☀

I love a bright crisp day but I hear you on the aches and pains, it's not joke..I've never done grave rubbings but have seen them done, although they are so beautiful when completed I do worry if it might hurt a stone that's fragile

We have a few people here in America that go and they clean those old headstones without using abrasive chemicals. I don't know if they allow it there, but it may save those headstones from decaying and give people a chance to record them. I like that you recorded that old coffin now at least there's pictures of it it was made beautifully. Do they still have funerals at the old church.

Unfortunately we need permission from family to touch headstones and if no family left you have to prove it which is very hard to do. I'd imagine there's no sermons here anymore

So sad with so many abandoned/derelict churches. Fascinating seeing the vaults & mausoleums amongst the headstones & unmarked graves. Sadly, such buildings are confined to major cities such as London where the wealth lay in the 18/19th century.👍😉

I don’t think a mausoleum is the way to go. This is very depressing how they are left to deteriorate over the years. Can you imagine how beautiful everything was when it was first built.

There has been a significant drop in the number of people regularly attending church but many rural churches were very small and the congregations probably joined with others in bigger, more modern churches. Another, perhaps more common, reason is many rural areas have become depopulated for reasons of work and convenience etc even though the overall population has increased greatly in the last 30 years.

I think your short preview to this vid's cold opening is very effective. Starting with a compelling moment to start your story, as you have in other videos, is wise. American network detective/police shows used to do this to hook in viewers.
