Hundreds of people are believed to be dead after a massive landslide hit a remote village in Papua New Guinea on Friday.
The natural disaster took place at approximately 3 a.m. local time and resulted in more than 50 Kaokalam village homes being buried, and presumably, many families, too.
Local community leader Andrew Ruing captured footage of the devastating aftermath, showing people carrying their belongings as they traverse rocks and debris. He said landslides are an occurrence that has “never happened before” in the area.
Residents have estimated the death toll to be over 100, however, officials have not yet confirmed. “There are more than 300 lives [that] have been covered,” Ruing said, later echoing residents’ pleas for aid from the national government and “whoever [else] wishes to help.”
Prime Minister James Marape says emergency teams are actively responding to the disaster, adding that he will provide updates when they become available.

@rinalore9416 Oh, did I offend you? I don't need to explain anything to you, but if you must know, that country is one that has an ongoing civil war in which each side commits unimaginable horrors upon each other including cannibalism.

@@guyfawkes8384 I don't think they all partake in that kind of crazy way and just hearing the word makes me🤢gag. They don't teach us much about Papau New Guinea here in School and I've not seen anything about it on the news and I'm now grateful for that. 🤦🏻‍♀️Its the 21st-Century and the World's crazy. 💐Thanks for sharing/scaring me with your🤢reply.

This is about 3 times more deaths than 1903 Frank Slide Alberta Canada 🇨🇦 It was one of the largest landslides in Canadian history and remains the deadliest, as between 70 and 90 of the town's residents died, most of whom remain buried in the rubble.

Too many standing behind the community leader wanting to appear on TV, rather than spending time looking for possible survivors. Having said that, my thoughts and prayers go to those who are trapped. Hoping they are still alive.

From the looks of the small village, there are low signs of modern industrial technology. Moving debris manually takes hours to days and a lot of people,If they can move it at all, that's why he is calling for help internationally. Funding and technology to clear the debris can help them. Smaller villages don't function like a modern city and people can't just get water out of a fridge, every little contribution keeps the economy of the village functioning they have to also focus on maintaining order.

That wasn't a natural catastrophe, that's a climate-change disaster and I don't see a lot people rushing in to help the helpless in Papa New Guinea (who's just as important to this World as each of our Countries are. The people are using sticks and shovels, where's the rich Countries and why aren't they helping! I want New Guinea to call on Canada for money, our Government gives it away to everyone but Canadians! I'm so sorry for the losses and my condolences go to the ones who lost loved-ones.
