Hundreds of Birds ‘Free Fall’ Out of the Sky

It’s a perfectly calm moment in Mexico, when suddenly, something mysterious falls from the sky! It’s a flock of black birds swirling to the ground, and it’s absolutely stunning. Hundreds and hundreds of the birds appear like a plume of black smoke. Within seconds, many of them fly off, but a considerable number are killed upon impact, left scattered on the ground. While it looks like they’re just free falling, Miami Zoo’s Ron Magill says that they were actually on the run from a predator.

They don't fly individually, they fly in a collectively guided manner. If many of them decide to fly down and up to avoid a predator, the entire group will replicate the movement, even if there isn't enough altitude for everyone to do the maneuver.

This is false. Fish for example swim in groups to avoid predators (because predators will have to traverse larger distances until they find a prey), and when the group gets attacked by a predator they swim in all different directions to maximize they survival chances (as predators will get confused) and then slowly group up again (smaller groups first, then a big one). This same principle applies to flocks. This is explained in several books about chaos and complex systems.

Magnetic anomaly, pulse. Birds as a flock, lost their up/down bearing same as stunt aerobatic pilots sometimes do during manuevers. Entire flock dived, lost track of how close to the ground they were, slammed into the ground full speed. Most got up, flew away but a number of them died on impact.

obviously impossible to tell, but it looks like a starling murmuration. I guess it's possible that a predator could've scared them into the ground during murmuration. I don't really know enough about them but they have insane reaction times, my guess would be some kind of herd mentality thing since they navigate by the birds around them so if the flock 'dances' into the ground they're none the wiser

0:26 to 0:27 Check out the dust cloud to the right of the flock as it travels across the street. Looks like the end result to a microburst caused by dense cold air coming off a rain cloud. Since the air in Mexico is so dry it may not be reaching the ground. The same conditions have knocked commercial aircraft out of the sky.

There was not enough distance for them to gain enough momentum to crush their bones with just the weight of their bodies nose diving toward the ground from that height. There had to have been extra force propelling them. Also, if there was a predator, they flew right back in its direction the instant they regained control of their flight, which makes the notion thoroughly ridiculous. The trajectory of the flock is shaped like a large gust of wind, and all the physics point to them being forcefully blown out of the sky.
@Smokeyjoedamanedamythdalegend

It looks like they got hit by a downburst or something with the amount of force some of them hit the ground. You can see some dust kick up too, and the immediately fly back up. I don’t think if they were escaping a predator they’d all immediately go back the same direction

I've seen this several times. They're merely flying along with the group like how sheep would follow each other without knowing where they're going. They just go with the flow. Some of the maneuvers involve sharp dives. Obviously if you're flying in a pretty dense flock, you're not going to be able to clearly see what's ahead of you, this is what caused some of the birds to smack into the pavement and die. Imagine you're running in a dense crowd headed towards a cliff. The people at the front will see the cliff and move aside, but the people in the middle will not be so lucky and end up falling off by not reacting fast enough, and/or by being pushed off by an equally oblivious group behind them..

A similar event happened right outside my house a couple of years ago. The same type of bird too, they migrate from Canada in the winter. No one really knows why it happened, but some say it was due to the smog. I kind of agree with Angeline in the comments though, about it being a magnetic anomaly. Weird stuff happens around here.

That’s crazy!! Could it be some sort of air pocket or weird gust of wind? I doubt the “toxic air” bit given how quickly they recovered.

My bet: something caused the birds to fly very close together in a massive clump and drove them closer to the ground. But because of their speed, and close proximity to each other, most of them did not see the ground before it was too late. Either they're in some crazed mating frenzy or behavioral anomaly, or that was a really smart hawk/s
