Informative video on a seldom seen rifle. One historical quibble - Hungary did not receive her "independence" in 1920. On the contrary, the Treaty of Trianon gutted Hungary, stripping her of lands historically inhabited and ruled by the Magyar since 800AD. Millions of people were displaced and her lands reduced by half. Hungary was a full partner with Imperial Austria after 1867, and the Empire officially known as the Dual Monarchy, with Franz Josef as Emperor of the Austrians and King of the Magyar. Lots of history there.

Glad you pointed this out! Most people think of Germany when they think of harsh retribution for starting the war, but Hungary (in my opinion at least) suffered a much more traumatizing defeat. The country lost more than half of its territory, most of its precious resources, and the displacement of millions of Hungarians is still a very controversial issue which is a source of political tension with neighbouring states. Hungary also went through the greatest hyperinflation ever recorded in history after the second World War. In general, Hungarian history is a melancholic one, pepperred with a great deal of suffering, injustice, and struggle for sovereignty (which remains the case to this day). On the bright side of things, it's a country with a noble and old military tradition, the fruits of which include this wonderful rifle. My grandfather started his military service with one like this when he was conscripted at the age of 16 in 1943. He told me that once he was promoted to corporal he was issued the much coveted Kiraly SMG.

Unfortunately, the weapon fired only 8 × 56 mm lead ammunition, which was obsolete compared to the German Mauser 7.92 × 57 mm FMJ rifles. They were also made from the Hungarian 35m for export to the Third Reich under the name Gewehr 98/40 but in a different caliber and already fired the German 7.92 × 57 mm FMJ ammunition The German version of the Hungarian 35m rifle was used to fire 7.92 × 57 mm FMJ ammunition at the Royal Hungarian Army from 1943 under the name 43M. What is a rarity among Hungarian WWII weapons is the Danuvia 43M submachine gun aka "Király géppisztoly" (King submachinegun) and its predecessor the Danuvia 39M submachine gun You may be able to find a few of them abroad, but even in Hungary it is a difficult task to find one of these two submachine guns.and there is a serious price to pay for an original Danuvia 43M submachine gun kzbin.info/www/bejne/gIi0d6eIfslra7c

8x56R was quite a good round and quite modern (going into service around 1930), not quite up thier with the 8mm mauser stats wise, but comparable enough to not rechamber it if it wasn't for logistical reasons.

My understanding is that in Europe the "gun" is the barrel, and not the receiver. Therefore it is not uncommon not to have serial numbers on the receiver. Check for serial number on the barrel and see if it matches the butt plate.

I have a 35M. It has a crack in the buttstock where the lower screw goes in the buttplate. Probably about 3" long. Any recommendations on what to do about it? Try to repair? Leave it alone. Since these are pretty uncommon I do not want to ruin the rifle or detract from the value but I would also love not having a crack in the buttstock...

Once wood is cracked, there isnt a way to un-crack it. The main thing is to repair it in a way to make the crack less noticeable and stop it from cracking more.

Nonsense. Where did you get this idea from? I've been on a website which showed the Hungarians with the civilians in the USSR. When Hungary recovered what is now part of Western Ukraine, many Slavic people (mostly Rusyns) chose to support the Hungarians. It just doesn't align with what you claim. Meanwhile, many know about the socialist terrorists under Tito. Many know about the socialist terrorists in the USSR. Perhaps you're mistaking them with civilians.

@@zoltancsikos5604 I'm talking about the population of Eastern Ukraine, southern Russia, and there the Hungarians were worse than the SS in these territories. Therefore, when the battles were going on there, the command allowed not to take Hungarians as prisoners of war, but simply kill them, and before that this was only possible with the SS.

I am Hungarian and I know that (maybe because I studied history at the university) the Royal Hungarian Army had never been at Stalingrad. The Royal Hungarian 2nd Honvéd Army defended the West bank of the River Don, the Don bend. After setting up the Army was transported to the Eastern Front between April and June 1942. In the summer the army fought for to hold the control over the bridgeheads of the West bank of the Don bend at Shchuchye, Korotoyak and Uriv. In the autumn 1942 the army set up the defensive line by the River Don. On 12th January 1943 the Red Army started a huge offensive against the Hungarian Army and the defensive line collapsed, the Royal Hungarian 2nd Honvéd Army was destroyed. The Army consisted of 207 thousand soldiers and about 60 thousand died and another 60 thousand became PW and disappeared. The Army had to defend 200 km long frontline, so the defensive line was not deep enough. It was one of the greatest 20th century tragedies of the Hungarian nation. After ww2 the communists executed and imprisoned many soldiers and officers.
