Basic warmups for the Hussar sabre fencing lineage. These movements, practiced daily, will help you stay loose and mobile (or get that way!) so that you can fence in comfort.
This channel was created at the request of students who wanted a handy visual reference for techniques, and in order to help us make new SwordFriends to trade whacks with. Come fence with us! We routinely help long-distance students as well, so if you have questions or constructive commentary, please feel free to ask and/or jabber away below. :)

I won against 4 sword masters at the Renaissance Fair and that got me an invite to a tournament. My only experience has been games, videos, and play fights (and it showed because it was really just persistence that got me through as I kept losing), but since I have a month to seriously practice I've been studying your videos carefully and they've truly been a blessing. I spend 2-3 hours a day just drilling the basics, watching your videos on loop, and adding more advance techniques you have bit by bit. Thank you for all these videos, I know it's not a replacement for actual practice but it's the best I can do relative to my cash situation.

I will start doing these warm ups from now on. I'm interested in saber fencing. Sadly, there are only 3 Hema clubs in my state (Im talking about German states not American) and none of them teach saber. So I guess I have to learn from online videos like this one.

I have a half-dozen students scattered all over -- the learn-online model is workable. You can also get online private lessons from me via my Patreon if you intend to study seriously -- I have two European students doing so already, one in Germany. Good luck and have fun training!

Hi Russ, LOVED the elbow circles. Never saw them before and I definitely see how valuable they are for sabre fencing. Thanks for sharing!

I never expect a swordsman cares about warm up and mobility! :O This is a really good special warm up, whit the tipical joint movement of the fencing. It seems, you know a lot of about anatomy. I mean in my point of veiw, im not an fencing expert, but capoerista, amateur gymnast and teakwondo practitioner.

Hello. I would advice to step up this warm up a lot. Look up into so called RAMP system it will help you with sturcture that make sense. (i am not saying the movements are bad, just that they need proper timing and can be enhanced by proper warm up structure). One should start warm up with increasing blood flow, heart rate, breathing, temperature and biochemical mechanisms. That helps activation and mobilization phase that you show. I would pay more attention to legs to stabilization of ankles, knees and more mobilization of hips (for lunges) but i guess everyone to himself. You are missing activating core muscles in your warm up. Also you only potentiate arms, do same for legs in my opinion.

I'd just purchased your book and a Hungarian sabre from Purpleheart Armory. I was looking for a video exactly like this. I'm wondering however, the first few times I've practiced cuts, I've found my upper arm gets sore really fast. I used to practice English sabre and it never happened before. Could it be that I'm generating power with my arms rather than my hips, or am I just a wimp and this is normal?

Most people tend to use their upper arms and thus wind up abusing their rotator cuffs, rather than knowing how to move from the waist effectively. It's normal. Just make sure you take care of yourself so as to avoid a strain injury.

@@russmitchellmovement One other question... I've noticed that when I spar others, I end up fighting from pure instinct rather than "by the book". I know about footwork, cutting motions, parries, etc., but it seems the moment I start actually fighting, I forget it and end up fighting with awful footwork and using fencing sabre styled attacks. How do I fight the tendency to fight instinctively?
