Thanks for this video. I am trying to learn Hungarian before moving there to teach, so this topic is handy. I've been studying with some language apps, and I recently learned about the accusative form. This video explained that even more clearly for me, which I greatly appreciate.

It is for what is called the direct object in English. In a sentence like "I see the car" the car would get the -t in Hungarian because that is what you see. Or if you speak German, it's the same thing as the accusative case articles (den,die,das) and their usage overlaps with the Hungarian usage pretty much perfectly.

Wow, what an awesome movie! Thanks very much for the glorious clip that inspired me to watch it. It's like a Hungarian version of the "Friday" movie series here in the US. :-) On a lesson related topic: (ballpark figure) how many special vowel shortening exceptions do you think exist for the accusative case? For example, eper -> epret. It seems like it would apply to words where it sounds more "harmonious" to abridge the stem. However, madár doesn't seem to follow suit with this rule. :-/

Hi, can I ask you, why in the last part of video (from 9:02 ) there is not the -t also in second line. For example, mennyibe kerül egy kiló almat? That is not also Akuzativ?
@hungarianlessonwithzsuzsi7 жыл бұрын
László Iván Sure! :) Because the alma is the subject and not the object of that sentense.
@laszloivan83217 жыл бұрын
Oh köszönöm :) I hope i got it now.
@hungarianlessonwithzsuzsi7 жыл бұрын
For exemple: Hol van a könyv. A könyv az asztalon van. (Where is the book? The book is on the table). In this case we don't say könyvet, because the book is the subject of the sentense. It's the same when I ask Mennyibe kerül egy kiló alma? (The alma is the subject). I hope it more clear now. ;) Thank you for watching!

Megyek .és veszek egy kiló almát.I'm going to buy a kilo of apple. This is an apple =ez egy alma.This apple is beautiful =ez egy gyönyörű alma...Eszem az almát=I'm eating an apple.I don't want to eat apple anymore = Soha nem akarok enni almát .Do you understand it?

Sorry but this is way too much way too soon. I'm not saying this won't be of any use to somebody trying to learn Hungarian who already has some experience with it but for a total newcomer, the amount of stuff you have thrown at them over the course just the first three lessons will be just overwhelming. The key to getting a newcomer invested is to make them feel like they progress, allow them to build their first sentences no matter how simple. Back in the first video you briefly glossed over the three pronouns and quite a couple of phrases that would go with them but you didn't mention, for instance, why the word order changes in the negative. so many teachers of languages are under the impression that everybody hates grammar but as long as you stick to the relatively straightforward stuff they can master with little effort (such as the conjugation of the verb "to be" or some of the more basic ones), you will allow them to construct their first simple sentences and actually understand how they work. But if you insist on grammar being this scary boogeyman you have to avoid at all costs, don't compensate for it by flooding the student with a bunch of unfamiliar words they will forget within the next few seconds. Groceries might indeed come in handy but come on, not that much at a time! That also concerns the numerals: stick to 1-20 for now and that's it. You really don't need more at this point, just keep putting them in the aforementioned simple sentences. And then you default on your previous assumption and literally go carpet bombing on the poor guy with the Accusative stuff. Now okay, I understand that it'd be hard to come up with even very simple sentences that wouldn't employ that particular case and that's fine. But you need to keep the doses as small as possible. And try to avoid the grammatical nomenclature: myself, as a speaker of a highly conjugated language, I don't really mind that but you need to understand, most Anglophones have never ever heard the damn thing and won't understand it. Just try something along the lines of "Look guys, if you want to objectify a word, such as in 'I eat an apple', then just attach a '-t' at the end of the word. It isn't always so straightforward but don't worry about that for the time being." And really, I wouldn't focus so much on the pronunciation now. You may think you're making distinctive sounds but to an average foreigner, all they hear is just different variations of exactly the same vowel. Just take it easy. They can focus on it once they actually start having any sort of grasp on the language to speak of. Don't take it personally but this is, as they say, a piece of constructive criticism.
