This video will be on one of my favorite axis power helmets of wwii. The Hungarian 35/38 helmet was a series of helmet designed and produced by Hungary during wwii. The original Hungarian 35 would be heavily influenced by the German m35 stahlhelm. The Hungarian helmet would differ from the German one in the liner and chinstrap attachment method and the addition of a lashing bracket at the rear of the skirt so the helmet could be attached to a pack. The Hungarians would export 75,000 m35’s to finland in the 1930’s and later would send m38’s during the war. Conversion processes would happen to m36’s to change them to m38’s and that change would basically constitute extra pins/rivets for the liner to help stabilize it better. The m35/38’s would remain in service until the 1950’s in both finland and Hungary ultimately being replaced in finland with the m40/55 and in Hungary with the ssh40.
Hopefully you liked this video and subscribed if you like this sort of stuff. Please leave a comment with any questions, additional information, user experiences, or suggestions for future videos and I will do my best to answer them. As always thanks for watching.

The M/55 was actually manufactured in West Germany, though the liners in Finland. The Finns only domestically manufactured the M/40, which was a copy of the Swedish M/37, and later modernised into the M/62 when it was deemed superior to the M/55. (Sweden also had a near-identical M/62)

I don’t think that the extra holes mean that it was an m40, those where probably drilled to fit the Hungarian helmet liners as the Finish probably had extra stock of those, at least more than their custom ones to fit their m55 stahlhelms. The m40s that the Germans used had split pins towards the front, which the m55’s eventually did. But before that they probably just used the Hungarian liners that had the extra rivet spots in the back. This is just what I saw when researching after someone else claimed that the “real” German helmets had the extra holes, which i don’t think is true. Hard to know for sure though as there is not a lot of info around the m55 (m40/55) helmets.

I’m guessing you are confusing the Hungarian m35 and m38 which are two different helmets with different liners. The Hungarian m38 has a very German based one piece liner and chinstrap. Whereas the Finn did not they had a liner and chinstrap system based off the German and Austrian m17 from wwi which had separate liner and chinstrap but it’s what they had Infrastructure to produce and it was easier to just punch holes in the shell then was the change how they made liners.

Dad got me a shell of this, unfortunately it has no liner, but it's got a slightly scratched up original emerald green paint and the coat of arms and it's a size 64 wich means my rather large head would fit in it nicely :)

I appreciate your content and really enjoy the way its presented. So many channels try to have a shtick that's just generally annoying or overly aggressive for no real reason. After seeing so many, it's tiring and I gotta say, I love the straightforward info you present, and the fact that your opinions on helmet designs aren't argumentative for the sake of arguing with your audience. Keep up the great work!

hello Devin can you let me know if the m-40/55 helmet shell if it is a size 64 or a size 66? because I bought two different Finnish m-40/55 helmets size 58 helmet and size 59 helmet w/liners but the shells are size 64 and the liners I bought were after market size 58 liners for the helmets but they wouldn't fit inside shells. just wondering
@DevinK
@DevinK 2 жыл бұрын
Well the Finnish liners and shells should be similar to the Germans ones but the fins didn’t size stamp their 55 helmets just the liners

@@DevinK no I mean take a measuring tape and check the size of the helmet from around the outside. A size 58 and a size 59 should be in a helmet size 66 but the helmets I got in size 58 and size 59 and both shells are size 64. That’s why I want to see if it was a fluke or if your m-40/55 is a shell size is also a 64 thanks
