Which version comes or came without the lining? The crater Rim is the current civvy version. Is there a linerless version of that? Edit: Apparently the extra length was by design. Because the boot was designed for the mountains of Afghanistan and troops carrying very heavy loads the extra length was supposed to prevent the wearer's toes from mashing into the front of the boot when traversing downhill.

I just purchased a Steyr M.95. It's a long rifle. All walnut stock. Underslung swivels. I have a fancy S stamped over the widest part of the barrel shank. The original proof marks are hardly visible under the S. At the furthest point forward on the barrel taper, just before it goes under the rear sight, there is the number "4". What is this, or what does it indicate? On the right side of the receiver, just behind the barrel shank, and on the right side of the barrel shank before the taper, there are two stamps. But they are illegible to me. They might be the Austrian eagle crests?? The bolt: there is a K on the base of the bolt handle, and an R on the back of the firing pin body. There is a K stamped onto the front flange of the trigger/magazine group. The rifle definitely has the updated rear sight with range markings only on the left side. I CANNOT FIND AN IMPORT STAMP ANYWHERE - even under the barrel just behind the front sight. The front sight is attached to a barrel band. All serial numbers match. But the barrel shank font is different from the receiver. The bolt is electro-penciled. On the right side of the the stock, it has its original serial number lined-out, and the matching serial number (to the rest of the gun) next to it. On the left side of the stock is another set of numbers (very faint), but they do not match the lined-out serial number, or the updated serial number. What is your assessment?

Alles Gute.

Contrary to the video conclusions, the Mountain Cookset was developed and procured during World War II, nomenclature “Cookset, Mountain”, Stock No. 64-C-1145 Specification OQMG 79A, J.Q.D. No. 305 Drawings D-591, D-592, D-593, D-594, D-591A, supplied by contractors including Republic Stamping and Enameling Co. (“R.S.E.”) Canton, Ohio January - February, 1944.

When the example in the video supplied in 1952, the 10th Mountain Division was a Stateside training unit, not participating in the unpleasantness on the Korean Peninsula. Although the Division took them to Italy starting in December 1944, Fifth Army declared the Division’s specialized alpine and mountain gear unit level equipment, so it remained in depot storage in warehouses in Naples and the Peninsula Base Section in Pisa, while they went into the line in January 1945, much to the consternation of ski troopers who had trained with the equipment. Quartermaster Historian Thomas M. Pitkin, writing in 1944, includes the following in his monograph: “Along with the 1942 stove and intended to act as a container for it when it was carried in the rucksack, a mountain cookset was developed. This cookset designed to serve the needs of two men on extended operations away from a regular company mess, consisted of two pots which nested into each other, with a cover for the larger pot. The cover could also be used as a frying pan. The cookset was preferably made of aluminum for lightness, but the first large procurement was made using steel due to the critical shortage of the lighter metal. The combined stove and cookset attracted the attention of a number of arms and services, and it soon became apparent that issue would be requested by a variety of forces in the field, in addition to the mountain troops” (Footnotes omitted, page 52).

I always thought the dot fastners on it were dreadful. Anyway I've retired that coat. A 1970 M65 came up on ebay here in Ireland just after I wrote that. It wasn't much for what was being asked. That arrived Monday. It is as good as new. I mean mint. Not faded and no signs of wear. The guy who sold it must not have known what he had and it's value. Anyway it has Aluminium zips and the wedge on the slieve as in the pre 1972 version. Have to say I'm so happy that came up and I bought it.

As a police officer years ago, we were issued these from military surplus. I wore them during snow storms on duty, and they simply keep your feet warm. I also used them at home whenever I had to shovel snow. Mine were made in 1979, and are currently in my garage in California. They are great for use in water too. These boots will be around well after I pass on, and hopefully someone else will get use out of them. They still look like the day i received them.
