The reason Katniss voted yes to the symbolic Hunger Games, was to gain Coins trust, in order to kill her at the end. And the reason Haymitch agreed was because of how similar him and Katniss are, and therefore he understood what her plan was. Just thought you should know :))

There is a lovely line near the end of the novel, when Katniss says she doesn't need any more fire. She needs peace, and calm, hope and life. We also learn it took a long time for her to find the courage to have children, and she clings fiercely to the knowledge hers will never know what the Hunger Games ever were, not really.

"What I need is a dandelion in the spring. The bright yellow that means rebirth instead instead of destruction. The promise that life can go on, no matter how bad our losses. That it can be good again." - A quote from mockingjay that sums up katniss' love for peeta and what he has always meant to her.

It was a bittersweet ending, cause no one turned out to be happy in the end. Everyone suffered, because this never ends, even in their minds or their nightmares. No one was really happy after the Games. Everyone lost someone. They all lost a half of themselves. And it wasn’t because of them, it was because of the corruption of Snow and Coin’s power. That’s how war is. You can’t play war without expecting to suffer, even if it’s a book or a movie. And no one is used to recognizing that kind of reality.
@disistheway2679

One of the best comments on temporarily finding happiness after such events. After all these years I still believe that the Hunger Games does it as one of the best when it comes to realistically portray PTSD. The nightmares, the screams, the feeling of almost being completely numb and knowing you won't receive justice. It perfectly portrays the sheer horror in the eyes of Katniss and Peeta. Its the same look I've seen a hundred times before as a medic in the Gaza Strip and Mosul in 2014 and 2017. That look of pure despair when people lose family members but also the look of pure hope after reuniting with their loved ones, after we pulled them out of the rubble. The grey area where you see good people become bad people after their home is bombed by foreign countries. To either retaliate or find peace. This series bring that aspect forward really well. I met multiple people that shared bonds like Katniss and Prim did. Even met men with the character of Peeta and Finnick. I was invited to eat with their families. I've received gifts from some of them and even got flowers from their kids. Its hard to find out that you sometimes shared a meal with people that died shortly after. The pain becomes so agonizing that every memory, every image and even smell causes you too break down, to the point it feels almost impossible to eat, drink and even stand up. I like that in the ending of Mockingjay, we see them gardening, sitting in a field and listening to the rain. I do that as well in order to supress my memories. As dystopian as their society might seem, its not far off from the truth. After a while you realize that our politicians (Snow and Coin in their world) use Hollywood, the mass media and even games as a means to justify the chaos they have created over there. That they use it to invade countries, assasinate leaders, steal natural resources and not give back profits to locals, even classify documents of airstrike reports and vilify refugees. In most ficitional movies, there is also an element of truth. That's why I like the Hunger Games. For me its closer to the reality I've witnessed than it is to fiction. They did a great job in portraying those emotions.

One of the things I like about this series, books and movies, is that it does not offer a tidy love interest romance. The main characters (especially Katniss) are trying to figure out what they want, who they love, and where their relationships are, in real time. This is what real life is like, particularly for people in this age group (remember, they are all 18 or younger when Hunger Games starts). It is particularly validating to see a young woman character be given full agency to experience all these feelings without being forced into a box set by the men or boys around her. Katniss rules -- so she can pick one or the other -- or neither of them. And she can do it on her own emotional schedule. Refreshing, actually.

Prim dying and Katniss yelling at the cat so heart breaking. This all started because Katniss wanted to save her sister and at the end she couldnt but it became a bigger thing. I was never team Gale but he cared for Prim and saved them many times so him being part of the reason she died wow. I wish that was explored more. Again never been team gale and his arch could make sense and be so messed up but I felt like it was rushed. Peeta and Katniss had to end up together but at this point it is not even about love but they are only ones who really understand everything that happened. Its something they will never get over. This series always felt so real.

As others have said, there was a prequel that recently came out about Snow’s back story. I didn’t realize they were going to make it into a movie. It will be interesting, because she makes it pretty clear in the book that Snow is a straight up sociopath. He’s not the villain, but his motivations are all selfish even when he’s doing the right thing. The world building will be cool though. I really want her to write the book of Haymitch’s back story. The books give some details about how he won his games and I think that would be a really cool story to read.

My youngest sister was 26 when hunger games came out. When they got to the part where Rue was killed, she cried like a baby. She didn’t look at another hunger games movie until the final one was out then she finished the series. And only because I told her that Peter and Katniss would be okay. Of course she was none too pleased about not getting a heads up on Primrose.

Such an amazing series. So well written with elements sewn through from the first movie to the last. After watching through it a few times, I feel the author foreshadowed Gales downfall in Katniss's eyes just after she was chosen in the first games. He tells her to get a bow and that she's good at hunting. She says back to him that she's only good at hunting animals, implying she can't hunt people. He says back to her that there isn't a difference. Ultimately, that's the central point in Katniss's mind through it all. She kills, but it nearly kills her to do so because she refuses to forget that those she's killed are humans. The whole society has rotted to its core, simply for the fact that so many have been able degrade others, dehumanize them, so their deaths don't cause them pain, but can even excite them. Ultimately, this is why Peeta was always going to win against Gale, because Peeta refused to dehumanize even the enemy. When he was of sound mind, he always tried to find compassion. Gale, never learned that, so he chose to excel in the ways of war. In the end, his ambition for war played a part in Prim's death. Just like how he claimed even a janitor was the enemy because they worked for the other side, Prim ended up being an enemy killed because she chose to help the Capital civilians in their time of need. Such crazy writing. So good.

It just tickles me every time you laugh at Gale being butthurt, lol. I really don't like him. Everything about him bothers me. He always treats his romantic attraction to Katniss as a competition, talking about how he can't compete with Peeta, and he's always so whiny and manipulative about it and sometimes tries to pressure her. I always felt like Peeta's feelings towards her were much more genuine. In the books, there is much less emphasis on the love triangle than in the movies. In the books, Katniss is largely disinterested in romance in general because she's got too much else to worry about that love seems frivolous, though she does eventually end up falling in love with Peeta. For the ending, I favor how the book handles, though the movie is fine as well. They're very similar on the surface, Katniss and Peeta together with a couple of children, but the book feels much more bittersweet. Both of them are very damaged from their experiences in the hunger games and in the war. They suffer from depression and PTSD, especially Peeta who still struggles with lingering issues from the capital's brainwashing. Katniss had been afraid to have children for a long time because the world she grew up in was terrifying, and she was always scared that something like a new hunger games could start and the children would be hurt, but she knew Peeta wanted children, so she compromised so that he could have the children, and the books go into her fear and anxiety over her pregnancies and the aftermath as well. Definitely more of a downer feeling than the movies, but also a more realistic one, I think. Overall, a great series, both in movie and book form!

20:57. Plutarch wouldn't turn into the next creep because the actor died during the filming. It was necessary to use extra footage and modify some scenes to close the character's story. Philip Seymour Hoffman won multiple awards for Capote, The Master, Doubt, Flawless, and more. He was also an effective villain and/or a likable nutty guy in action movies and comedies. He had overcame addictions from his youth, unfortunately, he relapsed and died from an overdose. His death caused such an impact that helped to change legislation so paramedics carry anti-opioid medication regularly, and it could be sold over-the-counter without prescription.

Thank you for the wonderful reactions to The Hunger Games movies! I think it's already been said, but the possible 5th movie is a prequel, from the book, Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. It goes back in time to the 10th Hunger Game and it is Coriolanus Snow's back story on how he began to become what he is; he's 18 years old in this book. The book is stunning, and it suddenly puts things in the Hunger Games trilogy in a whole new light with more depth. One of the things I feel is always lost a little is that Katniss' main motivation is survival. She cares for Peeta and Gale, but between surviving the poverty of district 12, desperately keeping her family alive, the constant threat of being chosen for the Games for half her life, and then the nightmare of the Games and the destruction of her district, Katniss takes a very long time to let down her barriers and get past the trauma and PTSD, to be able to trust and love even Peeta. Your perceptions that Gale's unrelenting hatred and fury that would kill even innocents is the death knell of any possible romantic relationship with Katniss is spot on. Even at the end, he doesn't say, OMG, my strategy got used to kill children, no! He can only see it in terms of he'd promised to keep Katniss' family safe, and since he didn't, any chance be had with Katniss was over. This does not necessarily make him evil. But we have to realize he's as damaged and traumatized as Katniss in his own way. There are generations of young people who grew up under the tyranny of the Games that are functionally scarred for life, even after the Games ended. The deaths in the Arena are not the only victims. Have to wonder how that damage shapes the emerging culture after the fall of the Capital regime. I have to give Gale this. He could have pushed things with that kiss, Katniss was so confused...but when he realized that she was not on the same page with him, he stepped back. That's called consent. That's why he's not evil. Damaged and eaten up with hatred. But still with a working moral compass that would not take advantage when he could have. When I said it took time for Katniss to learn to love and trust, one point that does not get communicated clearly is that in the book, it took about 15 years later for her to trust the new world they were living in enough to have children with Peeta and that they could grow up safe. It's a powerful series, both the books and the movies! I'm so glad you loved them! Thank you once again for sharing this journey with us!
@Jessica_Jones

Man, I so appreciate that angle of consideration -- these are generations of traumatized people. Gale is not evil, but he's still missing the point. He can only view others in light of how their actions and circumstances affect himself. In a sense, he is also focused on survival, but his bitterness turns to callousness, and it's too much for Katniss. ... That's why this series is so great, it's both psychologically and politically fascinating. And now I do believe I need to read the books again, ha

@@jessicabaublit2835 It's one of those movies you recommend not because you love it so much as, you just think it is something that should be viewed, y'now? Like a gift you want to give someone; it's not necessarily something you'd want so much as you feel they might like it. I don't know... there's just so much beauty in that Ang Lee film.

Thank you for your reactions! A prequel of the hunger games book series came out last year. It follows president Snow when he was young during the 10th hunger games. I think that the 5th movie you were talking about will be this prequel.

There is a prequel book released last year that takes time on the 10th hunger games. Lionsgate is going to adapt it into a movie, probably we are going to see it by 2023.

Don't worry the next movie should also be based on a book by the same author. It is a prequel called something like A ballad of snakes and songbirds.

I'm going to ride for "Clueless" and "10 Things I Hate About You" until Mary finally watches them. I largely don't care what she's reacting to (not a big fan of LotR or Hunger Games), but I really think she'll enjoy them. If we're stretching her a little bit... "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" or "Lucky Number Slevin" maybe? Not in her wheelhouse the way the previous two are, but very well written and funny, and she appreciated "In Bruges", so... I expect she'd enjoy both, or either, of those as well. Also, if we're going in themes: I'm watching "Palm Springs" on Hulu, so the time loop quadrology: "Groundhog Day" first. After that, in no particular order: "Edge of Tomorrow", "Happy Death Day", and "Palm Springs". I hate to recommend similar stuff, but... they should probably all be on her list to get to eventually, right? At least "Groundhog Day", I'd think. But... mainly those first two: "Clueless" and "10 Things I Hate About You".

There has recently been a new book called The Ballad of the Songbirds and the Snakes; it's a prequel to this story, focusing on the 10th Hunger Games. It really shows you how over time the games have evolved. I'm about 3/4 through the book so far and it's really good, it's a very interesting, but quite confusing, I'm worried about how they're going to explain everything in one movie, or if it will be split into two parts...I'm not sure, but if the movie's a bit shit I recommend reading the book cause it's great

It's an incredible series. I was speechless too. It is a very ugly/pretty ending that has taken me awhile to get on board with it. Prim dying? That I cannot accept, ever. That's just wrong. But I really like your insight and woman's perspective on the whole Gale/Peeta mess, and your accent and pronunciations are awesome too. I always liked Gale for Katniss and hated the "goodbye Gale" moment. But I understand it now. Thanks Mari!

I’ve never figured out why it’s called The Hunger Games when technically there’s only one game. The Olympic Games has lots of games but this really only has one. And each time is called the games so it’s not cumulative either. I suspect the author just called it that because of the Olympics but didn’t really think it through.

My wife really dislikes the scene at the end with them and their children. But I think it really caps off nicely. There is a future after trauma. But you have to live with it your whole life and can just do your best to keep it from happening the next generation. I love these movies (despite NUMEROUS inconsitencies and problems with the storytelling) because it is a rather harrowing look into trauma of war, away from the usual suspect for these kind of stories, WW2 or Vietnam.
