As an outsider I can’t see the dirty protest as a success. When I first saw pictures of the men in blankets, I was shocked that the English could deny them the right to clothes like every other prisoner. Then I found out what was happening and felt confused. Same with the slops. At first I was outraged the English wouldn’t let them slop out. Then I got confused. The hunger strike sort of had to redeem a lot of bad decisions in publicity imho. No offense intended to those who feel strongly otherwise. I just wanted to explain a different perspective to show why it didn’t make sense to some folks like me.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say here. Could you explain it more clearly, please?

The dirty protest was a failure and they admit it themselves and that's why they escalated to hunger strike. It was out of desperation. The blanket made you feel empathy - so what for them prisoners? ya know? What's it to them that people were disgusted by dirty protest? That's secondary. They wanted their demands met nothing else mattered because of their tunnel vision. Don't mean that in an aggressive way just trying to get you into their strategic mindset. Blanket and Dirty both failed. Blanket -> Dirty -> First Hunger (failure) -> 1981 (failed on status goal, achieved all other demands essentially within the year)
