How can people in a country as rich as the UK be going without food? There's something fundamentally wrong with the world. A few people are so rich and so many people are struggling to just stay alive, even in rich countries! Something's not right.

Yeah, food isn't always the first choice - because rent and heat and other bills may take priority. There's no one offering electricity bill handouts - but food is in abundance in the stores/shops and is easy to give away, so of course that's what gets given away.

From witnessing corruption in the States, always ask yourself: who is financially benefitting from this situation? Always follow the money! You might not think anyone is benefitting, besides the government. But several times people mentioned having to pay on loans, etc. What legitimate lender would grant those loans? So are they from check-cashing/ loan shark types? Predatory lending? Everyone complains about utility companies- do they have programs to truly help the poor? Or do the poor pay more for the same services? Find the connection between corporations and corrupt politicians

These days you can be poor, hungry and fat at the same time....whereas the rich are skinny. Strange world.
@grandmalovesmebest
@grandmalovesmebest 5 жыл бұрын
Herr Goldmann Most poor ppl try to wait then eat a whole meal once a day. When you are starving yourself your body will grab whatever food it gets and store it as fat. It will also slow your metabolism. Primitive ways to keep the body alive. These are some of the reasons ppl, rich or poor, are fat. If you want to stay skinny, eat the right foods and eat a little throughout the day. Your body knows more food will be coming and so uses what it gets for energy.

When a guest comes to my home, or if I meet a friend in the pub, I may offer them a drink or some food. There are no pre conditions, I don’t ask if they could work more hours or sell their organs. It’s just a nice social thing to do. After all, with my private pension, I’ve got more money coming in than I can spend. For me, as I accumulate thousands of surplus pounds in the bank, a few cans of beans is literally nothing. Being retired and with nothing to do, volunteering at a food bank is a positive thing for me personally, rather than just sat looking at the walls. We live in the fifth largest economy in the world. Many of us could afford to bath in beans everyday. Yet the UN has criticised this country for its levels of child malnutrition. What I choose to do with my surplus beans is not the concern of any politician. They may like to see hunger used as a punishment for being poor. Or they may choose to deny it to avoid the need to collect more tax. Either way they should just but out.

Erato IsYourMuse She will. It takes quite a struggle to go from one lifestyle to another. First world ppl cant believe what is happening bc they were led to believe they belong in a certain place, belong to a certain type of world. Then there is the problem with logistics. What do you give up, where will you go, what are the possibilities and problems you will face in a world you do not know? It is like this: the first day you are homeless you dont look any different than you did yesterday but the world as you knew it is gone. And so is the YOU that was. Yesterday you were a college professor, today you are a "homeless person." Got it?

That lady who thinks there is no need for food banks. I mean these are kind of politicians who have led society to what it is now. How she was even an elected official is a question her constituents should all be asking. I'm a govt worker and I sincerely hope she, and people like her, who haven't an ounce of empathy and who make sweeping generalisations, get pulled down to a level where they have to eat corn flakes for dinner in the dark. Perhaps then they will understand.b

Employment does not equal lack of poverty. If cost of living is so high and wages so low, it's a meaningless way of judging the situation. Besides, even if people are getting along by making certain choices - like living in more crowded conditions, making cuts in their spending - then they aren't spending elsewhere and this is felt through the rest of the economy too. None of this is sustainable and it's not just a UK specific problem.

With all of the things happening in terms of no employment, low wages, rent increases, benefits sanctions, lay offs, illnesses and any other sudden event, I don't understand why some say that food banks shouldn't exist, that food banks are not needed? Well without them, what would starving children do once their parents lose their jobs or are laid off? What would the senior/elderly do once their pension runs out and they're hungry? I just couldn't be that harsh like that woman and say that helping ppl in need by feeling them should not be... And I hope that she understands that although she's complaining about ppl not buying food bcoz they're doing other things with the money bcoz they can go and simply get free food, yeah but it's mostly canned, pasta, bread, what I'm saying is there's no meat or fruit or fresh vegetables so yes they get free stuff for about 2 weeks

Exactly, which is why people need to stop identifying with "them" and stop finger wagging at the poor as though that's going to fix anything. You too can get cancer and become unable to work - you might not be able to pay a mortgage or pay rent either. How can such a thing be allowed to happen? It's so easy to fall under, especially if you don't have a support network. Some people may be lucky enough to rely on family or friends but that's certainly not going to be the case for everyone.

There's another element to rising poverty in Western societies - the decline of strong family structures. 30 to 50 years ago, the family unit was intact, stronger, able to help fellow family members when times got tough. Now, it seems like few families have that. Everyone is fending for themselves. And every penny is being squeezed out of the older generation, so there's no wealth or property for younger generations to inherit

I know I will get blasted for this but I can never see any clear answers anywhere... The government says there are approximately 14,000,000 people designated as “poor” in the U.K. My question....if we subtract people who: -left freely -provided government school before age 16 -left freely -provided government school with no GCSEs -became pregnant before the age of 18 with no monetary support from the father, no job, no training - became pregnant before the age of 25 with a second or third child with no monetary support from the father (s), no job or training - abuse alcohol -abuse drugs - have more than one ASBO or similar - have a criminal record before the age of 25 - engage in (or own) at least three of the following: Cigarettes SKY tv or similar An X Box A high end phone A big screen TV False nails Takeaway meals three times a week Full body tattoos Off-putting personal appearance such as green hair, piercings, peculiar hair arrangements Been fired for unexcused absences, serial tardiness or anti social behavior on the job NOW how many people do we have in poverty ? I wonder... How many of these poor people are instead victims of their own disastrous decisions ( lack of decisions) and life styles. The guy on this video who would rather smoke than eat...the pregnant girl ( and a boyfriend who looks stoned) who thinks “something” might happen to improve her situation . do we just accept that they have no free will and somehow this is all our fault? I don’t know...do we? Is lt? This list doesn’t include the children of these people ( poor wee mites), nor does it include the truly sick or disabled. These folks and children are kept in poverty because there isn’t enough left over to really help them. It does not include illegal immigrants because we are told that these people contribute to our economy. -

Even more food banks everywhere. It,s now September 2019. I live on my own dreading the winter months ahead. I live on a low pension I can,t walk properly I would go for a job If I could walk. But, not much hope in getting one. So I,m stuck do I eat or do I pay my gas and electric bill. As you can see nothing has changed since 2014 only an increase in energy bills. the government don,t give a shit whether you live or die. Politicians In their own homes do not have this problem they most probably claim the energy bills back on their expenses. Are our bills high because we have to pay for building to be lit up, for example, HP, London bridge, the London Eye and many many more up and down the country? So don't give up smoking and visit the free food bank. So what about a Alcoholic that doesn't smoke and they visit the food bank or a Druggy who doesn't smoke and visits food bank we would say why should an addicted alcoholic or Drug addict get free food when they choose to feed their addiction from their benefits money first. Why should the public give free food when many of these people spend their benefits on other additions ? Too easy to get free food when really should be giving drug and alcohol tests first. Weall know the addicts would find a way to get round the system. I have first hand experience of that.

NEWHAM in east London is allegedly poor, it has two food banks not one. It has more people on Housing Benefit than any of the other 33 London boroughs. It has more long term (more than 6 months) unemployed than any of the other 33 London boroughs. It has more evictions for not paying the rent than any of the other 33 London boroughs. Those 'poor poor' people who get evicted with kids KNOW they will get rehoused. Newham also has 80 (yes EIGHTY) betting shops. DEFINITELY NOT a poor borough, the DWP keeps the betting shops open.

This is actually the effect of socialism. Benefits are a socialist system. When you put the government in charge of peoples welfare, this is the inevitable result. It doesn't matter which government it is, it will always end the same way. Government handouts are always a trap. They're designed to lure people in with the promise of free stuff. But once they're on them, they're trapped in poverty for life. That is how socialist governments control their populace. They can't bite the hand that feeds them, after all.

@@janejan9728 I have never heard so much rot in all my life, this has nothing to do with socialism or the benefit system, benefits are there as a safety net and as such should be enough to live on until work can be found. paying people a meagher hand out so they don't have enough for food is wrong and has a knock on effect, people's health suffers putting more strain on the NHS crime rises along with drug and alcohol abuse. With drug abuse this puts money into the hands of organised crime.

Hi, Canadian here. I’m trying to understand what is going on here. Was there an economic depression that made so many people have such hard times, or did poverty grow by getting worse every generation, or what was the main cause of this? I’ve seen a lot of these videos, and a lot of them are filmed in 2014. Does everyone in England have to pay into those boxes in flats for electricity? Or is it just in council flats? That seems awful cruel to make people freeze, lose heat and fridges, and hot water. Who owns them: the government, or a company? How much does it cost to have utilities for one day? Why are those flats all mouldy? Doesn’t the government realize it costs more to treat life long diseases from breathing mould, malnutrition, depression, than it does to provide healthy basics of life?

People who are doing well, have a good job, savings , assets cannot understand why people ended up penniless in their old age....like this ex-MP. People who are penniless also cannot understand how they end up like that, they have little idea how they got here. They just have lots of faith in their government , the system and the future. Most just think the system , the gov had let them down. Many of us also are full of sympathy. But we also must remember that for every dollar given out as welfare, some young working tax payers had to pay for it. In the end, no one benefit. It just go round and round. Where I came from, you cannot rely on anyone to give you welfare. If you cannot be self sufficient, you becomes a burden to your family. I learned from young I cannot afford to have no money. As far as I can remember, I work more than 2 jobs at any one time. I live within my means and do not indulged in things that drain my resources. Unless you are born with a silver spoon, you must avoid doing silly things, make mistakes or live to satisfy your immediate satisfaction. You need to plan, save and invest for the future. If you are going to be carefree and careless about your future, then dont blame others or expect society to compensate for your lack of foresight or discipline in your youth. Still being a civilized society, I do agree that No matter what, the country should have some budget to at least feed the down and out whatever the reason that got them there. As a specie I think we are killing ourselves with the moronic policies we have. Treating older people like trash and embracing youth and AI like its the best thing for humanity. If you think that life is tough now, wait another 3-5 years when AI becomes the norm and they will make even more jobs obsolete. Who then is going to have compassion on us then? Who the businesses going to sell their product to when mast people have no money?

And when you see people that go to food banks but continue to smoke, or have an Xbox or anything like that, it does make you question their priorities and thus their real need for it If help like this wouldn't exist, then those ppl would sell their unnecessary possessions and not spend money on unnecessary things. However there are ppl in real need, sometimes through no fault of their own, for whom this is survival.
