Skies of Arcadia for the Sega Dreamcast is an RPG that has stood the test of time. Although I wasn't a fan of the slow-paced random encounters or the ship battles, I adored the game's world and characters and would recommend this game to anyone looking for a very deep adventure. 🍖
Also, here's a great, in-depth video about Pinta's Quest: • Review: Skies of Arcad...

I absolutely loved the small touch during boss battles that when your HP gets low, the song starts to shift into minor keys and get a little slower, but once you heal up it hits the key change to go right back to normal. I've never seen another game that does that, ever. (Could be a gamecube thing because that's the only one i've played, but still it was an awesome small detail)

That happened in the Dreamcast version as well! I remember I was really shocked at how "bad" the music sounded in the first big fight I was losing. I had my TV volume a little lower than usual and it just sounded like whale noises!

You did a wonderful job with this review! I’m so glad you incorporated those lovely Dreamcast sounds into this video as well. That was such a nice touch during your streams and it was nice to hear it again. I had just managed to wipe that Lambda Burst dialogue from my memory, so thanks for bringing that gem back again 😄

Thanks so much! I couldn't leave the sounds out after they became such an important part of the streams... I felt like I had to yell over them sometimes since they were so loud! And you're welcome for bringing back that wonderful bit of poetry to your brain folds. It's still stuck in mine!

I have strong nostalgia for this game. A friend let me borrow it in middle school and insisted I play it after commenting I wasn't into RPGs. Long story short I fell in love with it and I still consider it one of my favorite games of all time. I actually played it again recently and although I still love it, I won't deny the encounter rate is annoying. Funny you mention Drachma being the most relatable as I totally agree. I preferred Gilder as a kid as he reminded me of Han Solo, but I appreciate and connect with Drachma way more now. Great review !

Great review! I've only played this one two years ago and immediately became one of my favorite RPG of all time. Loved the story, the setting, the unique yet simple battle system and the soundtrack. The older I get I definitely feel that a lot of RPG in this generation can feel like huge dedication in comparison to older titles from the 8 and 16 bit generations because of it's length and sheer amount of hours it can take to complete, but I guess that's just me. I do find your annoyance with voices very fascinating and I don't know why lol.

I think it's up there with my favourites as well for all the reasons you mentioned, though I would've really appreciated a little bit more speed in the battles. And yes, they're a total time sink! I don't mind putting in the effort to get through a game if it has lots of good in it, and this wasn't one I was rushing toward the end of. I appreciated it from start to finish! I don't know why voices irk me so much but it's funny that you find it fascinating. I was scandalized when Nintendo added voices to Super Mario Bros. 2 in Super Mario Advance!

as a 38 year old who first played this game at 17 and still enjoys it to this day, I have no idea what you are talking about in regards to the characters. The only character I've never been able to relate to was Gilder. The poon hound skirt chaser was never my favorite character. I did love Clara tho, but that's beside my point. Basically, what I hear is "I missed out on this game when I was young enough to care about 'these damn kids' and I'm too old now to really care about anybody but the crotchety old man." Kind of amusing, because even when I first played this game, Drachma was my favorite character, essentially anime Captain Ahab, and I found his tendency to just up and dump Vyse and Aika whenever their plans didn't align with his a legitimately funny aspect of the game, especially once the game itself began acknowledging it as a running gag (Drachma has left the party...again). I'm not even 5 minutes into the video and it sounds like you hate the main characters just for being kids, even though you say you don't. I'm honestly trying to understand where you're coming from, but it's kinda sad in my opinion when people feel the need to allow their age to dictate their enjoyment of a game. I feel like if that's the case, why even bother to continue playing?
@hungrygoriya
@hungrygoriya 2 жыл бұрын
I think we all relate to characters differently, and for some context: I've never been a fan of bratty characters even as far back as my teenage years playing games like FF8. I found 90% of that main cast insufferable. It's more my personality than it is my age I think. Not being able to relate to them at the beginning didn't detract from my ability to enjoy the rest of the game since it's not just focused on them, and they obviously grow a lot throughout the adventure. And I also think it's perfectly okay to play a game in your 30s and see that game's world and the people in it through your own eyes and your own experiences... our preferences don't line up and that's totally fine.

No. Youre not spoiled. There was this weird period of time in the early-mid 3d console era where devs were like "oh, we made this awesome animation/voiceovers"! So you need to see/hear every single goddamn time! Tales of Symphonia did this too on the Gamecube. I got my brother the ps2 version and his gf at the time made him quit playing it because people shouting attack moves every 5 minutes annoyed the crap out of her. (I still to this day hear Rightous Indignation! in my head as I type this. And I played that game 20 years ago). Hell, I got Tales of Arise last year, and they *still* havent put a "bark control" setting for how often chars actually shout special attack names. It gets real old real fast when you do combos. Bark/acknowledgement settings have been pretty standard on PC rpgs since the late 90s so I was surprised. Fortunately, most modern console rpgs give you the option to skip summons/massive attack cutscenes. So you can view them if you want, or press something to skip through.

Is this your first review for a "modern" system? I don't recall seeing any previously, so that's really cool, if so! Skies of Arcadia is a game I never got around to playing, but have always meant to -- and after seeing your review, it seems pretty clear I'd enjoy this one! If you plan to continue sifting through the DreamCast library and are looking for something a bit unusual, may I recommend Space Channel 5? Even if you're not typically a fan of rhythm games, Space Channel 5 is... an experience. Though it is completely overshadowed by its sequel, which is sadly only available in English as part of Space Channel 5 Special Edition on PS2, or as a download on PSN (you can get it on DreamCast in Japan, but that version never made the jump to Western shores). Definitely a game I'd love to see your take on, though, as it's always fun hearing people's first impressions of it. It takes a lot of people very much by surprise. ;) Also, if you're willing to jump a bit farther ahead than DreamCast at any point, there's a semi-obscure RPG on the Wii that I rank among my top 10 favorite of all time, which the Skies of Arcadia footage in this review made me think of. The game is called Opoona, and it's a highly underrated game IMHO. It doesn't seem like much at first, but the world in the game is one of the most fleshed-out and lived-in I've ever experienced in a video game before, and is just INCREDIBLY expansive (thus why Skies of Arcadia kind of made me think of it). Hell, the game world actually has its own art history, complete with its own artistic movements (standardism, revolvism, etc.) which are defined by classic paintings and sculptures you can actually go see at in-game art museums. And each piece of art is signed and dated, with the descendants of a lot of their artists actually surviving as NPCs within the game you can talk to for additional backstory, and the locations for every nature painting being based on actual locations within the game that you can visit yourself if you want to. That's the level of detail we're talking here. The battle system is something else, too. Your main characters are aliens called Tizians that all have balls called "bonbons" floating either above their heads or beneath their torsos, and you attack by hurling those bonbons at the enemy. Which means you don't just choose "attack" -- you also have to aim your bonbon, and charge up a meter to indicate how hard you throw it. It will then fire off in an arc at the specified angle and speed, which you sometimes need to use to your advantage to hit enemies from the top, or -- if you have boomerang-style bonbons -- from the back. And of course, since your weapons are bonbons, equipment isn't swords and armor or anything -- no, it's things like bonbon cores and coatings. Deck your bonbon out with a titanium core and spikes, or a diamond core and flames! It's literally unlike any other RPG I've ever played, and is just an incredibly fascinating game. Oh, and the music was scored by Basiscape, led by Hitoshi Sakimoto of Final Fantasy Tactics and Vagrant Story fame, so the game also has an absolutely GORGEOUS soundtrack. Anyway, yeah... apologies for the long comment and the random recommendations, but if you're taking the lid off the Pandora's box of newer games, I figured I might as well pass along a few recommendations for unusual titles I think you'd probably enjoy. ;) And either way, thanks for another great review!
@hungrygoriya
@hungrygoriya 3 жыл бұрын
I have Space Channel 5 hanging around here somewhere... I can't say I've ever tried it before, but your thoughts here are intriguing. Thank you for the recommendation! Opoona sounds really, really interesting. That degree of depth when it's done candidly, like in the ways you've mentioend here, make me happy. I remember playing Dragon Age and just having to find book after book after book to fill in history and lore, and while that's fine, having something interactive and embedded in the game's world sounds really neat! And bon bons? What? :D I will have to keep a look out for it since I don't currently have a copy, but I'd definitely be interested in taking a look! I think the only other game I've reviewed from around the same time period was Elemental Gimmick Gear, but nothing newer than that or this. I am certainly not opposed to heading into newer territory, but my focus is mostly retro just because that's what I have the most of in my collection. Thanks for another thoughtful comment!
@Wyrdwad
@Wyrdwad 3 жыл бұрын
@@hungrygoriya Ah, I forgot about your Elemental Gimmick Gear review, but I have watched that one! It's another game I never played, but I recall seeing mostly positive thoughts on it from others, so your review took me a bit by surprise -- but was an interesting perspective to hear, to be sure! Opoona definitely seems right up your alley, though I should note that if you do play it, the English localization (from Koei, of all companies!) has some issues that do detract from the game just a bit. It's mostly a perfectly fine localization, but there are moments when the meaning gets a bit muddled, and also spots where one thing is translated two different ways. I can remember one in particular that was actually a bit funny: an art installation in one area that basically consists of a spinning metal protrusion on the ground with big, dangly arms that are perfectly timed and positioned to smack metal pipes of varying heights as it spins, producing sound each time it does. This installation is correctly labeled by a sign with the name "Octo Ballet," but one of the nearby NPCs refers to it -- completely unironically -- as "Taco Volley" when you speak with him. ...You may be scratching your head, but if you speak any Japanese, it's pretty obvious what happened here. The Japanese word for octopus is "tako," and the English borrow-word "baree" is used both as "ballet" and as the "volley" in "volleyball." Whoever translated the NPC dialogue almost certainly did so without seeing his in-game position, and thus had no context for what he was talking about. But small flubs like that do pop up from time to time in the game's text, and while they are by no means game-breaking, it's a bit of a shame that they're there. We're lucky we got the game localized at all, though, really, as it was kind of destined never to be a big seller in the West. Whoever greenlit it probably didn't wind up in particularly good standing at Koei, but I'm very thankful to that person for letting it happen anyway. ;)

That whole adventure was sooooo immersive back when it was released, I swear that was one of the most impressive game that my friend having a ps2 wanteeed so bad! To this day, this j-rpg is still one of the best ever released. The special and animation are insane, and the exploration and world are among the best. The character are lovely and the mood is great, a lot of emotion in the story and the ending is memorable with so much plot twist. Seriously, a must have. I love this review, but... Another person who thinks offensive magic is useless and never heard of such a Delta Shield thing (very common mistakes). 1. Fina is your strongest caster (she also learns almost all colors of magic faster than other characters), always use magic with her. The rest of the group just helps Fina learn faster the spells she needs (choose the rest of the group the same element that Fina has - this will speed up the comprehension of magic by two and a half times). 2. With the exception of Lupers and Kanezles (very high magical defense, you need to use Rain of Swords) and large opponents (which you need to kill with powerful targeted attacks), all other opponents must die from one well-chosen spell. Not enough damage? Don't forget about accessories with a willpower bonus. My way of learning spells (in retrospect, I see minor flaws in my logic, but in general the logic is correct): 1. Both characters learn Green magic so that Aika has the Sacri spell as a backup. 2. Both characters study the Red element for the rest of the dungeon (the boss is killed by Pyri). 3. For the way home, a Green element is chosen because the most durable enemies here are afraid of Green (and Purple). 4. Purple is learned on the way to the Shrine Island, it takes 11 wins to learn the Crystales spell (I was lucky and my eleventh fight was just before the boss fight, I didn't have to farm). With ice magic, the bossfight turns into a beating. 5. Again, the Red element up to and including the boss. 6. The Executioner and his assistants are killed by the Blue element, but then I again choose the Red element as the field is convenient for the Sewers. 7. Again the Blue element for the fight with the soldiers of the Valua (Incremed Cutlass Fury plus Crystales are enough to kill the guards of Fina). 8. Fina studies Pyri. 9. Fina studies Noxus. 10. Fina (encountering Magma Tiki) suddenly discovers that she doesn't know ice magic, spends time learning the first two spells. 11. Fina studies the Sacrum. 12. Fina studies Pyres. 13. Fina and Aika studies Wevles. 14. Fina returns to Red magic, at the time of entering the Moonstone Mines she knows (not needed now) Pyrulen. 15. Fina begins to study Silver magic. 16. After Grand Fortress, a break is taken to fully study ice magic and the first two Yellow spells (most likely it turned out to be a mistake, because it delayed the study of Eternum). 17. Fina studies Eternum, now all "Large" enemies are not a problem, but easy prey. 18. Fina learns Blue magic, then Yellow. Unfortunately, at this point, offensive magic begins to run out of usefulness, as the effectiveness of weapon Super Moves outperforms magic, especially targeted attacks. Eternum, however, retains its deadly effectiveness against any (just a couple of exceptions) "Large" enemies. 14:02 Regarding Aika's Special Attacks. These are spelllike abilities (i.e. they use willpower and are directed against the enemy's magical defense) and they are inferior in effectiveness to ordinary red magic. As for Lambda Burst, this attack is more expensive (SP 8 vs 6) and weaker (base damage 200 vs 240) than the Pyrum spell. 14:20 Usually in these cases, Aika's second ability, Delta Shield, is used. I remind you, this is a complete protection against any spells. Among the shortcomings, I note that this does not allow you to cast positive spells on the group (you can still use the corresponding items for healing and buffs) and does not protect against special attacks, including debuffs from these attacks (there is Aura of Denial to protect against any negative effects including instant death). Use Delta Shield plus Pyres or Pyrum if there are no Loopers here. Use Delta Shield plus Focus on other characters on turn one, then Rain of Swords and Delta Shield on turn two otherwise. 19:16 I would say that most opponents require two to five moves (depending on the opponent) if you do everything right. So, for example, I defeated Chameleon in three turns (first Wevles from Fina, then Wevles from Aika and Fina, then Incremed Harpoon Cannon) and Giant Luper in two (Focus, Apa Wax, two torpedoes on the second square of the second turn, on the second turn another torpedo and Ancient Cannon aimed at the same square). P.S. I thought I was slow when I (first time) completed the first disc in 46 hours and 9 minutes (I saw a person who completed the Legendary Edition 100% in 46 hours). Well, as it turned out, I'm not the saddest case yet.)
@hungrygoriya
@hungrygoriya 2 жыл бұрын
It sounds like you had a really solid strategy with magic. I liked the super moves better because I didn't have to worry about my MP gauge as much, and it worked just fine! I didn't really say that magic was useless, but it was just easier for me to use something that didn't have to be restored often at an inn.
@Elenil_Vivian

@@hungrygoriya I was also worried about the amount of mana at first, when I first arrived at Sailor Island I bought 60 Magic Droplets or so. As it turns out, I often don't use my full mana pool, especially with the abundance of these naughty Lupers requiring me to use the Rain of Swords. So, for example, from leaving Nasrad to getting Delphinus (two dungeons!) my Fina spent 19 out of 24 mana. Or after leaving Esparanza before arriving in Yafutoma, Fina spent 16 out of 27 mana. Mount Kazai? Fina spent 14 mana out of 28. Ruins of Ice? Well, right now I'm in the process, there are no screenshots from the end of the dungeon yet.) But I doubt that Fina will be able to spend her 30 mana. It's easier for me to wipe out all the enemies with an AoE spell on the first turn than to hit with regular attacks (giving them more time to hurt me and force me to spend mana on healing) or wait for the second turn when Spirit Points are enough for the Rain of Swords. Late game, however, one AoE spell (even the most powerful one) is not enough to destroy enemies larger than small ones, so I have to forget about magic and use Incremed weapon AoE moves (Rain of Swords, Gunslinger and Claudia). By the way, if you're wondering, the problem with spells (and spell abilities) is their different damage calculation, they have some base damage (50-500) plus the willpower of the caster. Weapon attacks have damage multiple (X1.5..X9) of a normal attack. At first, the spell is extremely effective due to the high base damage. But the increase in spell damage is linear (roughly +10 willpower will give +10 damage) while weapon attacks grow in a parabola (+10 Power will give +15..90 damage... and now remember about weapons and Increm, which also increase attack). Fina. Willpower 200, Moondust Ring gives +48, Pyrulen spell 310 base damage. Roughly speaking 558 damage per 10 SP. Vyse. Power 200, +200 damage from Vorlik Blade, +36 from Thryllak’s Scale, +25% damage due to Increm, modifier Rain of Swords x1.5. Roughly speaking 817 damage for 14 SP. As a result, Vyse's third ability is stronger than AoE magic and can one-shot enemies where magic fails (two spells can be used, but it will be more expensive than the Rain of Swords).

The one warning I give people is the battles are slow and the plentifully. Which kinda affect the exploration side I think because you want to go over an area meticulously but you know your going to have to fight a bunch of battles. There is relief from this late game where it become easy to avoid battles but that is a long way off.

I'm really happy to hear you experienced it just at the right time. Not relating to main cast characters is more and more of a problem for me the more games I play, and I'm envious you got to have that experience. That late-game mechanic you speak of was amazing... I really appreciated that, even in preparing for this video when I had to go back and mic up the DC to capture some of those pre-battle loading noises. I didn't have to fight a billion fights on the way to the location I had in mind.

To be honest, as much as I like teenage JRPG heroes... I don't think the average 15-18 something is remotely mature enough to go on adventures with. No I don't care if there prodigies or not, the way lots of JRPG protagonists act sometimes makes me want to punch them (Lunar, I'm looking at you). Simply being good at combat with monsters isn't enough to entrust these people with saving the world, and very few actually act like they could be killed (and the times they do they are over the top with it). It doesn't help a lot of JRPGs are a little on the easy side. That's why I think Alisa Landale from Phantasy Star was a believable protagonist, as opposed to Virginia Maxwell from Wild Arms III (they both have the same age, have men older than them following them, etc.) I know it was done to sell games to this demographic, but a lot of times having someone in a fantasy RPG appeal to a modern teenager makes me go WTF are you doing?

Oh regarding the story, the translator was interviewed(you can find it by typing “skies of Arcadia translator interview”) they said they did a first pass translating it then just threw out the script and wrote it themselves only keeping the basic beats. So for a port I really hope they redo it and give us an accurate translation. I know people like our version I do to, but it pisses me off how often this happens in translation. I think these people should be sued, and barred from the industry. Every time the Japanese devs find out it’s happened they are super pissed. So it is obvious they have no idea it’s going on, and up to customers to demand better

i would love a remaster of the dreamcast version. not a huge fan of the gamecube version and it's nerfed difficulty. instead of just nerfing it, i don't understand why they couldn't just leave it as is and add an easy mode for those who wanted it. but it's like people don't want to play easy mode, they want normal mode to be easy so they don't have to feel like they need an easy mode, so just leave it as is and make that hard mode, and make normal mode easy mode without calling it easy mode, then everyone is happy.

I've played both Skies and Rogue Galaxy. Rogue Galaxy was by far the greater slog, I felt. I don't quite remember what frustrated me so much about that game, but I think it was due to the fact that it had 9(?) possible party members, and they only leveled up if they were in your current party. Given the fact you were occasionally forced to use a party member, they could be dangerously unleveled if you were forced to use them at some point. I also remember not liking the crafting/upgrade system, but I don't remember the particulars of why.

Even though it was at least 15 years since I played it, things like "Lambda burst!" and Vigoro's giant...cannon has been burned into my brain forever. The Legends version on the GameCube plays a lot better than the original, with shorter loading times and skipable cut scenes in battle. The only downside is that there is very little replay value. Once you've completed the game with all its treasure hunts and optional bosses, the only thing you could've done differently is your pick of the 4th party member, and that has very little impact on the game.

Awesome review! I expect you'll lose a few hundred subscribers for saying that the Dreamcast isn't perfect. Don't you know that retro gamers can't accept that sort of talk? You have to say that the Dreamcast can do no wrong. I never had a Dreamcast or Game Cube, and I only briefly played this game at a friend's house, and I was so jealous because I only had a PS2. It made me realize that the only way to have access to all the best games is to have three or four consoles, which is crazy because the film and music industries are smart enough to have always avoided that trap. Can you imagine a Warner Bros dvd player that only played movies by Warner Bros and certain third parties? The idea sounds as stupid to film producers as it does to us. Sadly, the videogame industry is run by really unintelligent people. Anyway, even when you do have nostalgia for a game, you never get blinded by it, and you point out the flaws of those games. So it doesn't matter whether you have nostalgia or not. I wish I could say the same for many other reviewers. As long as this game doesn't come out on the Switch, we'll always need a Dreamcast or a Game Cube to play it. But apart from this game, I don't see a reason to own a Dreamcast. As you pointed out, there aren't really any good RPGs on it besides this one. Grandia II might be ggod for all I know but from the gameplay footage I've seen online, I gather that it's very linear and there is no overworld exploration, so for now I'm not very interested. But even that game is on the Switch. Also, Crazy Taxi 1 & 2 and Power Stone 1 & 2 are all on the PSP, not to mention Street Fighter Alpha III. Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 & 2 are on the Switch. These are most of the best games for the Dreamcast, and I play them without a Dreamcast, so to me the console is obsolete except for Skies of Arcadia. The Dreamcast was great mainly for arcade games, i.e. mainly fighting games, shoot-em-ups and racing games. But that stuff was already great on previous-gen consoles, and the Xbox had a lot of games in those genres plus a ton of great 3D games. I don't see how Sega expected to have success with such a stupid strategy. "Let's make a console to play arcade games in an era when arcades are almost dead!" Genius.

I'm ready for the Rotten Tomato Club to show up and pelt me, but as someone who didn't grow up with anything other than an NES, Sega Genesis, a Game Boy and a PS2 eventually, I've barely scratched the surface of most other video game libraries. I think what the Dreamcast did it does very well in terms of bringing arcade stuff and lots of fast-paced genre games into its spotlight, but you're right: other systems did it too, so it was one of many! I'm still excited to try Grandia II for its interesting battle system mechanics (I played it a little and loved the mechanics) as well as Shenmue some day, but other than that, there's not much else to look forward to for me personally. Crazy Taxi's fun and there are a handful of games I'd pick up to play for a few hours here and there, but yeah: it's not an RPG/adventure game console for someone like me!

Your comments about not identifying with the main characters because they were so wholesome and hopeful and how you identify with Grumpy Grampa Sky Ahab made me sad. Part of what I liked about this game was that the characters were not brooding like a lot of RPGs at the time. Despite the genocide, slavery, war and my fear of heights the world of Arcadia is one of the best videogame places I would like to be in and it's mostly to the cheerful attitude of the main characters.. or maybe because I played the game when I was around 20. This is one of the best JRPGs ever made. RIP Rieko Kodama

Yeah, I wish I could've identified with them a little bit more, but they did grow on me towards the end of the game. Especially Fina. Its funny that you mentioned the brick hands everyone has. The game was also ported to the Nintendo Gamecube. That version lost the VMU stuff and compressed the music so the whole thing can be on one disc, but added some new sidequests, weapons, and slightly updated the visuals. One of those visual quirks were the hands. All playable characters and Admirals all have fingers whether in cutscenes or combat. IMO, all it did was make the brick hands in everyone else that much more jarring, but it never ruined the game for me. Glad you enjoyed the game. I never played the Dreamcast version myself, but I will always appreciate its uncompressed music. EDIT: Another change for the Gamecube version is that the random battle rate has been decreased and the experienced gained has been increased. Though its only something people who played the Dreamcast version will notice. Anyone playing the Gamecube version first will still feel that the game throws a lot of random battles at you.

It's so sad that the music's compressed in the GameCube version. I have this soundtrack on vinyl and it's so wonderful... the other changes sound lovely though. Especially the hands, haha... good to know they fixed that. I'll have to watch some gameplay from the GC version just to see what they did to the game design. Rebalancing is always welcome as far as I'm concerned. Thanks for the info! I would love to try the GameCube version someday, and it's nice that it'll feel a bit different when I do.

WITH a dedicated Skies of Arcadia race track. It’s a huge love letter to the game with so much going on around you throughout the race. Highly recommend it if you ever find your way to it. I played the GameCube version of this right around the time that the Wii was relevant and you could still get it for cheap, and I'll probably need to play it again; I didn't remember most of what I saw in this review. I have heard that it has fewer encounters, and a few extra bits of content, and it's possible that it makes the ship combat easier, too, because most everyone I talk to says how tricky it is, but I didn't have trouble with it. I do remember really enjoying this one, and how the discoveries really made you feel like an adventurer. I was also surprised by how visually diverse they were able to make the different sections of sky; I wish games like Skyward Sword and Bioshock Infinite would've taken some pointers.

Now you just have to hunt down the GameCube port of this amazing little gem. Dubbed "Skies of Arcadia: Legends", it fixes nearly every problem with the DreamCast title. Battles happen about half as often but give you way more rewards; there are more Discoveries on the world map to find; combat load times - well, load times in general - are cut in HALF (or better); there are some optional near-the-end-game side quests and Bounties to take on, and the character models for the main cast (basically, anyone who ever joins the party in battle) get an upgrade - no more oven mitt hands! You can also skip more of the in-battle animations for Skills and Super Moves, and the tiny "skip it" window is more or less gone now. If you ever get a hankering to play through Skies again, track this one down (I got my copy pre-owned for about $60 online a few years ago) and give it another whirl. It'll be even better the second go-round.
