As a single guy with no family, it makes zero sense to do a traditional turkey dinner. The cost for all that food and the amount of work it would take and just feed me? No way. So I do appreciate these frozen dinners. Thanks for the reviews!

Hey LS, I know what you mean. I'm a single gal with a son & we're basically in the same situation. My son is a picky eater & has never enjoyed holiday-type food, so it doesn't make sense for me to go to any trouble just for myself. Have you ever tried Stouffer's frozen dinners? IMO they're awesome & definitely my go-to when it comes to wanting a "somewhat" homemade meal. Especially with a Sister Schubert yeast roll on the side. TV DINNER PEOPLE UNITE! 😉👍

You definitely need a bit more poultry/meat, starches (more potato, buttered corn/rolls, etc.), and a brownie/chocolate chip cookie/peanut butter cookie, etc. to get into the 500-600+ calorie range... A military MRE often has over 1000 calories in one meal. Here's why: Common foods in MRE's: -Peanut butter (and lots of it) -Thick/doughy bread/pastry -Beef -Potato -Pork -Bacon -Chocolate Brownie -Oatmeal Cookie -Cheese Spread -Granola Bar -Fruit Pie -Fruit Drink Meat/poultry, starches, fruit juice, chocolate, dairy, nuts = plenty of calories Notice that fish, avocados, eggs, walnuts, fresh fruit, dark leafy greens, beans, berries, seeds, mushrooms, etc. don't tend to be very common with MRE's, or, to an extent, microwaveable meals. This is of course the kind of stuff that should be more common in our diets of course, but fish, nuts, berries, etc. can get pricy... Thus, we still like that microwaveable meal stuff, here and there... Its "good", but it's also not quite THAT good... :-/

I love this series idea. When I was in college I couldn't go home for the holidays one year and wasn't much of a cook back then lol. I tried a lot of these holiday dinners the week we were out and they were all horrible. I'm really curious to see how many of them are good and how many suck now.

Other than the lack of gravy usually making the turkey dry, these are some of the better quality meals that Swanson makes. Thanks Larry!

I was raised on these in the 80’s! I loved this dinner and Swanson’s turkey pot pies. I liked oven baked better than microwaved. I think the veg used to be peas. I haven’t had one in forever! I’m tempted to get a couple for my kids to try. I just realized they’ve never had a TV dinner.

Just reading the salt content makes me need to reach for my water, jeez, a cup of seawater would be less salty... :S

I always think the same. It's a wonder there are not more people dropping dead from sodium poisoning.

Believe it or not, I always put more salt on this when I make it... For as much salt is in it, it tastes kinda bland otherwise.
@queeffairy5 жыл бұрын
If you do canned soup your most likely hitting over 50 percent and that was a shock to me. That's not including any of the noodles with seasoning packets that most people tend to also snack on which usually have 50 to 60+ percent of daily sodium.
@MultiGreatNinja5 жыл бұрын
It is listed as sodium so you actually have to calculate the actual salt content of food. Idk why they just list is as NaCl and not just Na in food so annoying.

Larry--I live in eastern NC and asked my local Food Lion cashier whatever happened to the Butterball fully-cooked smoked turkeys. I did some research and discovered that they're still available in select markets. They were perfect for the novice cook: just thaw, heat and serve. I'm a pro at turkey roasting (my secret: stuff the cavity with pared apples to keep the meet moist and sweet), but folks who find cooking a big bird intimidating might appreciate your review of the pre-prepared smaoked Butterball.

The Backyard BBQ meal from years back when it was 2 pieces of chicken and 2 rib patties with just the mashed potatoes was my fave followed by the beer battered chicken and cheese covered fries. Any time they went on sale at Kroger for $2, I'd stock up on 10 of each and eat like a king (compared to the last few years) for 5 days for $21. Sure, they were absolute trash for nutritional value, but nowhere NEAR how trash $4 a day gets you now when you only have a tiny microwave and a single burner to cook with. An 8 in by 11 in counter space also makes things difficult. Now if I want cheap treats, I stock up on the Dollar Tree sliders you recommended. Helluva lot better than Krystal or White Castle garbage. Cheaper, too.
@williamfox33515 жыл бұрын
I remember when they got rid of the beer battered chicken with the cheese covered potato wedges. Used to be my favorite. They've brought it back but I'm not sure if it is as good as before. Still pretty good though. I do think they changed the turkey dinner though. A long time ago I remember the turkey being thicker(and maybe better) and the there being more stuffing.

I have these TV dinners whenever I feel lazy and don't want to cook or when I first move in or move out of my home.They are really quite good especially from the microwave,but like you say you just can't beat home cooking.

Funny that you mentioned at the end about mixing it, because I just scoop the veggies and cranberry in with the turkey and all, and mix it all up together, and considering you thought it was too salty, maybe you should give that a whirl. Cheers!
