Yabbie's are used for bait along the west coast of North America, they call them Sand Shrimp. Great for surf fishing for perch. Fun way to fish and great exercise. Timing the waves you run out as far as you can, throw your line and sprint back before the wave sends you tumbling.

I worked on a Coral Trout boat out of Gladstone in 2002 while I was waiting for my Residential Status in Australia. The nearest reefs had been fished out, so we used to run for the nearly 20 hours out to the Swains...which are by far and away the most beautiful part of the Great Barrier Reef. So far from land the water was crystal clear...and the night sky was totally dark when the moon was down...you could actually see the Milky Way. We fished one man per skiff...our 50 foot mothership was an old trawler that was home to 8 skiffs ...and we went out to catch Coral Trout and keep them alive for the live trade in Hong Kong. Our mothership had a large live tank, and we used to bring our Coral Trout in live...we had tanks on our 16 foot skiffs with the water changed continually to keep them alive. At the end of the day we would bring our catch in...live Coral Trout would go into the tank and dead Trout and by-catch would go into the blast freezer. It was an utterly unbelievable experience...I never made much money at it...but the scenery was utterly spectacular...and you could imagine what the world looked like before civilization occurred. The main reason you should go there is that it's so unlike the rest of the Barrier Reef...it's utterly pristine, clear, mud free...just beautiful coral sand...the last reefs before the deep sea. Once you cross the surf line the reefs drop off to nothingness...it's like a wall. I really hope you go out there...it would be an amazing experience for you and your viewers. BTW...I loved Gladstone...it may be industrial but it's the most Northern cyclone proof port in Oz...and it has great people and everything a Cruiser needs.

I agree with your comment about the Swains, I did a 10 day trip with Bill Hadfield from Bundaburg on Kathrine Ann a 38ft trawler type with 4 dorys. Fantastic fishing. Bill recently became the oldest person to circumnavigate sailing non-stop at the age of 80yrs.37 days. And he went the hard way against the prevailing winds. One tough sailor!!
@charlesharper23573 жыл бұрын
@@hanknaclek9747 I was depressed when I watched the episode where Troy and Pascale finally made it out there...the reefs had been devastated by crown of thorns starfish. Hope the reefs recover...they were so damn gorgeous.

Hi Troy and Pascale, nothing like wading an estaury with a bait pump and bucket. Good for Yabbies, Sandworm and Jap clams. Almost as much fun as the fishing. Good score on the bait pump, it will come in handy all the way down the coast, we get yabbies in Victoria, and the whiting to go with them, Flathead and Bream love them as well.

The drone footage of all those rays was amazing. I counted 14 that I could positively identify. Hey Troy I find if you take the wing off each side then cut it into 100mm wide fillets you can then easily take it off either side , starting from thick end and leave it attached at the tip flip it and skin it in one go 🤙🤙not the easiest one to process but worth it 👍

Another great vid guys. I'm anchored off Scarness beach at the moment but Pancake creek looks like a must visit. So many Rays... Yabbies are great bait but they don't last long on the hook. I was talking with a Kingfisher Bay local the other day and he reckons if you put your yabbies in a container full of metho then put it in the freezer overnight the yabbies firm up and last longer on the hook and the fish don't notice the metho because it's so volatile it evaporates away quickly. Bow and arrow would be great for rays. Love your vids.

Off the coast of New Jersey rays have saved many a fishing trip. I cut the meat into strips, add a bit of Bisquick, deep fry the strips and slather them in Franks hot sauce, similar to hot wings, kids and i cant eat enough! Wanted to add, i use pliers to remove the skin.

It's no wonder Gladstone is nick named "happy rock" as we all got a good licking from Pascale there. Bloodworms are the best bait for Whiting but then everything in the sea will bite on Yabbies. Taught my kids how to fish catching Whiting. They caught themselves which was just as well with the attention span of young kids. The best fun was to catch the fish and then feed the resident Pelican who was always on station. That was until one of them was a bit slow throwing the fish and watched their arm disappear into the Pelican's bill along with the fish. Happy days.

On the west Coast of the United States we call Yabi Sand Shrimp or Ghost Shrimp and we use them to catch perch, greenling, lingcod, Rockfish, Snapper Striped Bass and Salmon. They are a great Bait fish source we also use kelp worm and Sand Dab or Sand crab they kind of look like a mutated Potato Bug with a harder shell. Depending on the time of the year we really like them when thier in the molt. When thier shedding thier shell and when they are egging out because they produce these bright orange eggs and fish really like them. Ghost Shrimp are great because you can use them for bait all year long for just about any species of fish. You can keep them in your fridge and they will keep up to about 5 days. Just make sure that you keep them in a container with air holes in the lid and keep them in a bed of seaweed if possible because you don't want them drying out. Take some out on the reef with you fishing and see what you catch. I think that you will be pleasantly surprised....😊💕🍽

They are focussed on the yabbie beds and I would guess that those little critters enjoy a rich detritus diet. Gutters formed by the outflow of creeks are natural fish highways and will always be the place to look for fish aggregation.

Check out Hard Yakka Fishing Kayaker on KZbin for some tips on fishing that area next time you're up that way. Interested in seeing the next few installments to see if you fish Fitzroy Reef, 1770 or head straight down to Bundaberg and hey...
