Hi and welcome back to Route 7 Railway. Firstlwi must apologiesfor the poor resolution of this video the camera settings on my iPhone had defaulted to a low res value. I only discovered this when i uploaded the video to KZbin.
This video covers the upgrade of a rake of mediocre Panel wagons made by Hornby. These wagons were recently reviewed on Sam’s Trains. They were described as lacking in detail but quite free rolling. I agree with his description.
I found them to be on the light side and also quite poor over points, especially when the loco was propelling them. Constant derailing and coupling overlap.
I assessed that this was being caused by the very cheap and not very cheerful coupling/bogie design.
The bogie and tension lock coupling are of a one piece moulded plastic construction with no articulation, other than the swivel on the bogie itself, and no Nem pockets. Very cheep and basically rubbish in my humble opinion.
I wanted to fit magnetic couplings because I have had good results in the past with other projects, but my preferred make of Hunt Coupling do not currently make an off the shelf version applicable to this project.
So I decided to modify an older Hunt design of coupling, and challenged myself to see if I could make them work for this little project.
Anyway I had a go and was pleasantly surprised by the results.
I hope you enjoy the video and that it helps and inspires you in some small way to improve your rolling stock.
Regards…Steve 👍👍👍
