@@IaloneAmTHEChoppedONE bro, ging is a terrible dad. he DID abandon his child. losing custody doesn't mean you can never visit your kid. ging chose to remove himself from gon's life _completely_ for absolutely no reason. he chose being a hunter over raising his own kid. he's no different than someone in our world shrugging off their kid being taken away because they prefer their job over being a parent anyway. if gon hadn't wanted to become a hunter, he literally never would have met his father. this isn't my personal opinion, it's a pretty agreed upon fact that ging is a bad parent to gon, regardless of mito's involvement. this is something togashi himself makes clear. i'm not saying ging is a bad _person_ overall, because he's not. he's a relatively good man who's done a lot of good in the world. but he's also a bad parent. the two are not mutually exclusive. he can be, and is, both. mito isn't a bad person either. was lying to gon wrong? sure, yeah. but she pretty clearly lied to protect him. it was out of love and fear for his safety. while that doesn't excuse it, it does make it more understandable. that's probably why she wanted custody of him to begin with - for his safety. and honestly, she was right to do it. the way ging lives is no way to raise a child. mito was-is-a good mother. she taught gon important life values that he remembers and lives by. even with mito's good parenting, gon still became a pretty selfish kid. if ging had raised him, he really would have become an _actual_ monster. besides, she didn't stop him from meeting his friends? she literally allows him to go take the exam. she's honestly could have forced him to wait until he was a legal adult. idk how that area of legality works in the hxh universe, but if it's anything like our world, she was actually extremely tolerant and selfless (and probably really believed in his abilies) to allow him to leave as a ten year old child. mito is a good mom, who raised gon well. if the roles were reversed and mito was the irresponsible parent and ging a stay at home dad who fought for and won custody of gon to keep him safe, i would be saying the exact same thing. this has nothing to do with their gender, if that's what you're trying to imply??? it's honestly weird to frame her as a bad person for wanting to protect a child. 💀not telling the truth about his dad was wrong, but that's where her misdeeds end. she's a flawed person, like every character in hxh, but ultimately a good one as well as a good mother.

"Mito didn't "protect" him... Mito only acted as a tutor and frustrated Gon's adventurous nature" - this is all your assumption, not canon-supported fact. she is his mother, not a tutor. and canonically, gon learned valuable life advice from her, he literally mentioned something he taught her growing up on the ship when he first leaves whale island. she raised him well, and gon loves mito just as much as he loves ging. he considers her to be his real mom. he never at any point in the entire series mentions feeling like she stifled his adventurous nature. "Gon could have died many times in the wild." he plays in the forest around their house. any kid could theoretically end up in some kind of danger like that, but it's not an especially dangerous thing. a lot of kids irl live in rural areas and play in forests and are just fine. what is the alternative anyway? don't let kids play outside? keep them locked up in the house? that would be something a bad parent would do. mito gave him plenty of free rein to be adventurous in a relatively safe environment. and i would argue that ging intending to motivate gon to become a hunter puts him in FAR more danger than mito letting gon play in the forest. "Ging sets up a quasi-mythical figure (himself) to motivate his child to become one of the best hunters in the world" - this makes him a good teacher as a hunter, NOT a good parent, because his method for this (aka abandoning his kid and refusing to see him) made him a BAD parent. Kazuhiro Furuhashi is the series director for HxH 99 (episode 1 thru episode 62). He immediately knew what the direction and tone the manga was going for from the get go. Very talented! He was recently the series director for Spy x Family. If you loved the quality of that, you will love how he handled HxH 99. The man still has it! HxH 2011 took a bit to really nail the direction and tone. They started finding their footing a bit in York New but it wasn’t until post-Greed Island where they really found it. HxH 99 had 3 OVAs after the anime. The change in directors was noticeable. OVA 1 concluded York New and was not too bad. But OVAs 2 & 3, Greed Island, were not the best.

Even if you're not gonna watch all, at least I'd strongly recommend you to give Battleship Island arc (episode 18-20) a try, which is chronologically in-between Hunter Exam 3rd and 4th. That's one of the most well-crafted filler arc in the shonen manga anime history, period. Everybody has their moments to shine in it, and I mean everybody.

Both the 1999 and 2011 have their strengths and weaknesses, both are worth watching . But I think Sam has it right in the sense that, If you viewed the 90s version first. It might have skewed you viewing of the 2011 series. But by watching the 2011 version first, I think it enhances the 90s version. But that’s just in my book. I would very much enjoy watching the 90s version on stream with y’all. It would be fly😊😊😊😊

I watched the 1999 ver first and it has always been held near and dear to my heart. It humanizes the characters that just isn't present in the newer version. The bonds Gon makes feels stronger and Im invigorated with a sense of wonder and adventure in this version. It really breathes life into the world of Hunter x Hunter.

Haha, Leorio's a good looking dude. I knew Parker loved him really. His 1999 theme is really funny - very playboy, suave kind of theme. I like the sound of it better, but 2011's more skeevy chilled music fits him better imo. 1999 has its strength and weaknesses. It has way more atmosphere with generally cooler shots, and I don't think 2011 has anything approaching that atmosphere until the arc you're about to get into. Great suggestion for you to watch this first episode of the older series, because it introduces a few elements that were skipped over in 2011. Kite, and that Gon wasn't abadoned by Ging voluntarily. Ging isn't exactly a great father imo, since if you remember on that tape he was like, 'you want to find me? haha good luck i don't want to see you'. But still a detail 2011 should've included. Apart from 1. the atmosphere and 2. those vital details (and maybe Kurapika's + Killua's design and the Gon and Hisoka fight) 2011 is the more expansive experience for me. It doesn't skip any other vital details, and there's less fanservicey filler that slows the plot down. That filler's enjoyable, but 2011 goes through stuff quicker with every plot point from the manga. Plus, everything after Greed Island is not animated and the G.I OVAs from this older series clearly suffered from a tiny budget. It looks very weak compared to the rest of 1999 and even 2011. Gon's VA here is the same voice actress as Naruto, I think! That might be why she sounds familiar. I prefer 2011's voice actress a bit more because she really fits the wholesome kid feel and the emotional moments for me. That might be because I associate 1999's VA with Naruto too much though, haha! A little bit of trivia, since you guys asked what it was all about. Shonen Jump is a huge magazine printed in Japan where a ton of popular 'shonen' (manga aimed at younger boys) get their start. Dragon Ball, Naruto, One Piece, Hunter x Hunter... This is what people mean when calling HxH a 'shonen' anime. Other categories include 'seinen' (men), 'shojo' (girls) and 'josei' (women). They're meant to say something about demographics, since they're all about what people the magazine they come out in are targeting, but to me they aren't that useful. Girls can enjoy shonen, guys can enjoy shojo, and a ton of adults consume stuff for 'younger audiences' (shojo and shonen). A lot of that can have disturbing/violent content anyways - just look at Hunter x Hunter! That's a shonen. Rant over. I like talking a lot 😅

I've read the mangas of Naruto and Hunter × Hunter when they came out and was shocked that it's targeted at shōnen (boys). I've recently watched a video from Joey "The Anime Man" Bizinger: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f5a8q59vedl4eq8 about learning Japanese through reading mangas (he's even holding the first tankōbon of Hunter × Hunter in the thumbnail 😁) and he mentioned that Weekly Shōnen Jump is actually not targeted towards younger boys and thus not a good starting point (he gives better examples where stuff like Doraemon is published). So it's no surprised that Viz rated it T for older teens (16+) when they published Hunter × Hunter in the USofA.

the reason for not adapting the same to the manga the beginning of 2011 is because it would only have 52 chapters and if it was well received they would follow it, apparently they didn't think it would be successful, it's a pity because even though the beginning is quite cliche it's what the author wanted, even so as 2011 adaptation is much more attached to how togashi (creator) tells the story, the 99 the director really molded it to what he wanted and changed things, it is a matter of seeing the OVA of 98 that also adapts the first chapter and you will see that the rhythm and the atmosphere is very similar to the 2011 adaptation and both respect the manga.

Nah, y’all are awesome for watching this. The 2011 version did Kite’s intro dirty. Once you get to the CA, you’ll be glad that you now have context about Gon and Kite’s friendship. Also, the 1999 version is not as faithful to the manga as the 2011 version due to the fact that it came out a few years after Togashi started writing the manga. Also, the VA for Gon in this version is the same VA for the one and only Naruto Uzumaki 😌 (Junko Takeuchi) Last one and this for everyone who doesn’t know this: the 1999 version ran into the the end of the Greed Island arc. Interestingly, the Greed Island Arc for this version came out as a 2 part OVA.

Also: the remake was much closer to the manga than the original for the rest of the series.

It might just be the worst timing now, because it essentially took away what was gonna happen next, but that's still better than not knowing the contents of the episode at all I guess. The 1999 version in general is decent, it hits down a different isle a bit. Overall I would say the 2011 version is superior, however, episodes like this one are examples that 1999 did some stuff better. Generally speaking the tone is a bit more eerie and it feels less upbeat, perhaps a bit darker. (which isn't a bad thing per se) But if you watched 2011 first there are a couple of scenes of the 1999 version that really enhance the experience if you don't read the manga. At the end of the day, both are great series, but in a lot of aspects it's next to impossible to beat the 2011 version. There's also the issue that the 1999 version only covers so much.

The old version has parts invented for the anime, the 2011 version is more precise with the manga. The 2011 version came out to finish telling the story with the season that you are going to start watching. the author takes his time to draw the story. the original version of the anime is not finished because the author never finished the story on time. when he resumed the story is when they decided to make the new anime and tell the story from the beginning. the anime is finished so far (with a good ending, don't worry) but the manga continues and the story is incredible but he takes his time drawing the story

The 1999 episode 1 is such a great pilot episode to the series. It's actually insane how much more gripping it is in comparison to episode 1 of 2011 version. There's so much humanity in it, and the charcters' reactions and emotions feel so much more believable. Episode 1 of the 2011 version fails to make us emotionally invested in Gon, and doesn't really put us in Mito's headspace either. Not to mention that it skips Kite and doesn't even explain the concept of what a hunter is.

This was my jam in my early teens. Thank you so much for doing this! The 1999 has some deviations from the manga but they are quite subtle. What I love the most is the colour palette which is much darker in the 1999 version. This means that the violent scenes REALLY pack a punch! The intense moments feel really serious and deadly. i don't think the 2011 version did that as well. It felt "too cute". Still enjoy it though. Also I much prefer the soundtrack of the original but that's also just me.

Maybe it would have been better if they were told to watch this after meeting Kite in the 2011 version. Not before. I think watching 1999's Episode 1 shouldn't be suggested right before Chimera ant arc coz yeah it spoils Kite's appearance. Ideally it would be best to watch it first then start with the episode 1 of the 2011 version. Or if it has to be sandwiched between episodes. It could be between the Heaven's Arena arc and Yorknew arc. When on the island, it could be under the pretense of explaining Gon's motivations and relationships with Mito, his grandma, and Ging. Or just better exploration of the Whale Island as a setting. That way, Kite is contextualized, and after 2 arcs out of the minds of the reactors then, they get both the surprise when they see it's not Ging and recognition of Kite as a character. If both of those aren't possible, yeah just do it after meeting Kite. Not immediately before.

My favorite 1999 scene is Pakunodas death. Kurapika had made her that if she were to reveal anything she would die, which she did. In 1999 you see a chain rising from Kurapikas position all the way to where Paku were, it felt more significant and symbolic

honestly i think the simple explanation as to how Chrollo/Hisoka's name was in the binder in Greed Island was that Bisky was the one who saw Hisoka but since she didn't recognize him and they are both on the same team, his name was added onto their book without Gon realizing, until Killua checked his book after returning from the Hunter exam.

From this episode we learn nothing knew about Kite. Except that it's he told Gon about Ging. All others things we see in 2011 HxH.

thats the point, you should already be familiar with Kite and not be confused who is this guy the boys were transported. The entire greed island finale should feel like just another Ging shenanigan to not see his son. If 2011 version, did that, when we get to Kite, we know its another middle finger from Ging because the message is: "You were so great for completing my game, now hunt me together with my student, its obvious, gon, you need help" (we dont that Kite already found Ging at that point and we would not know until next week, this is how theories are formed and fandoms thrive). Instead, we got the nothing from 2011 version. I know its not the fault of the 2011 version because the chimera ant arc was not even finished when the anime started airing, but still, the scene will hit different, for the people reading the manga first.

first I am very grateful because you have watched the HxH 1999 version, even though you have watched the 2011 version even though you didn't watch all of it, if you want to compare the 1999 and 2011 versions, for season 1 I highly recommend you watch the 1999 version, the best version of HxH is 1999, because it is very different from the 2011 remake, don't compare the animation graphics, because the year difference is very much, the HxH anime is the anime with the longest hiatus record, I hope you at least watch until the end of season 1 in 1999, because you will see killua, hisoka , illumi , zoldiek family , and genei ryodan at their best unlike the 2011 version which makes them look ridiculous , and at least if you are really a professional reaction, watch the whole episode, and pay close attention when the film is playing , thank you and I hope you can get even better gbu
