Listening to this song always reminds me of how unbelievably astounding Hunter X Hunter is. Like everyone else I grew up with DBZ, but I have to honestly say that HXH is my favorite over DBZ.

Muhammed Abdul-Ghaffar I think a lot of 90s kids have DBZ up so high because of nostalgia. It introduced a lot of the tropes (both good and bad) that a shonen battle anime is founded upon. DBZ had its strengths and weaknesses like in its power system, escalation, the Piccolo effect, etc. No blaming Toriyama since he came up with a really good product and then had to keep up with Jump's deadlines the best he could. Togashi wrote HXH while avoiding those main weaknesses and came up with a story that, although won't ever be what DBZ is globally, is deeper, more intricate, and more well-controlled than DBZ, Naruto and Bleach are. I'd say Oda has done masterful work over One Piece but there's ways where HXH's writing is just better. I have a hard time speaking of FMA:B in the same breath as these Jump titles but only because it doesn't share the stereotypical tropes that those anime do.

One Piece and HxH are interesting to compare because in some ways they are polar opposites in the things they do well. Broadly speaking, I feel One Piece is most likely to appeal to creative types, and HxH to fans of technical rigor. The hardcore fans of each series often won't see eye to eye with each other on why their respective series is good. But DBZ is just garbage. It's nostalgia value and a few crumbs of decent at best content. And I'm a 90's kid.

Sometimes its hard to convince people that hxh has a much darker undertone and that it's really not just a kid's show when they're only in to the first few episodes of the show, but the stark difference between the tone shift in the OST from the first few arcs compared to the chimera ant themes is so stark it's almost funny.

I remember this one sounding during one of the battles against Knuckle (Gon and Killua against Knuckle) and it made me realize two things: Gon and Killua work very well as a team and Knuckle is very experienced when it comes to fighting, and I think that's what makes him a formidable opponent over his physical strength (which obviously shouldn't be underestimated)

J_El_Rey A shame that Togashi has kept taking a bunch of hiatuses. Nothing new given he did that with Yu Yu Hakusho. But as for why it never got a foothold until recently was because of the inconsistent production. Also, the 2011 series did a lot for the show, like what JoJo did. I do not mind the original show, but Madhouse's anime honestly surpasses a lot of the manga. That said, I do find HXH overrated. It's good. Very good. But really, it has a lot of problems, like tonal shifts being horrible. Chimera Ant being the worst example. I appreciate the subversions, but even then I do value earlier HXH a lot more, like the Hunter Exam or even Heaven's Arena. Overall, I give HXH a solid 85%. I prefer Yu Yu Hakusho over it, but Togashi did craft something very good.
