This was an insanely easy tip! I used the boot on the bottom and top of the rails, so I was able to drive a screw in the top as well. These things are solid. Super quick install; no messing around with epoxy. Thanks, Hunter!

You’re the man! I’m replacing my Mom’s wood balusters with some depot iron. I woke up at 3am stressing about not being able to figure this out and having to let the old lady down (I’ve watched like 8 hours of videos, I really didn’t wanna use glue because I knew I’d mess up multiple times) and then I ran across your video. I got pumped up and ran to the store for 6am opening. Got my first baluster up after about an hour lol I discovered I have a new problem now... I don’t have a flat table to use so I can’t figure out how to clamp the baluster down to cut it with my recip saw. I ended up standing on it and cutting it off my Mom’s deck.. Dangerous, but got the job done. If you have any makeshift clamping ideas I’d appreciate a plug! Also, I used to sell structural screws for a company named FastenMaster, we also had this sweet industrial hot glue gun called PAMFast. I believe you’re a finish guy, I bet you’d like it (only buy the yellow glue though, much stronger on wood to wood).

I do stairs for a living and about the same age. I do the same thing with the screws but always glue the tops, probably not needed but i just always have. I only use a #8 3/4" screw though, like a hinge screw. I use a 7¼ dewalt miter saw with a metal blade, cuts iron like butter. But ill cut 4 at a time with a jig like you For the caps i have a Milwaukee battery ratchet with a t10 bit. That thing is a gamechanger for me. Ill never go back to an allen wrench lol ill use a piece of lattice and push it against the shoes like a straight edge then tighten them

This is so smart! I'm going to be doing my stairs sometime this week (going from carpet to hardwood) and this method seems so much more efficient and easier than other methods. I might even be able reuse my current plowed handrail if I'm securing to the treads via a screw. Might even try to screw the top of the spindle to the handrail and cover it with the other boot. So cool

I completely understand! Unfortunately these "track" home builders stick to tight schedules and require me to have the rail finished on 1st trim. The painters are at least use to it on these DR Horton projects. I don't enough time to make an additional trip back to the house to complete the balusters after paint is finished. I do mine the same way, 1/2" at the top and 11/16 on the bottom. I put Lexel clear in the top holes though, this stops the tops of the balusters from rattling if the oak rail would shrink. Ive seen guys take the rail apart, install the balusters and then put the top rail back on. Which is insane unless I get paid a hell of a lot more!

@@huntercarlson5446 used the screw idea VERY successfully today ty🙏🙏🙏 Wanna drop a few helpful tips for your viewers if that's okay 1. When cutting your balusters on steps the first one will be shorter than the next by 4 inches or so because the railing is going higher at the back of the step 2. Trying to measure balusters with double baskets can be tough to get an accurate measurement because the features dont let the tape sit flat. If you know you are cutting off 6 or 10 inches each time, just measure that from the bottom of the baluster. It's easier to be accurate. 3. Definitely use screws. They worked so well

Awesome! 😎 Thank you for following up and sharing your quick tips after using my technique to secure the balusters! Great idea on measuring the basket balusters from the bottom! Also great tip on installing the balusters on stairs! Usually there will be 2 or 3 balusters per stair and you are exactly right, about 4 inches added to each baluster working your way back on each stair! I just finished a stairway with railing like this today, so the question comes to mind, was it just a preference thing, or why did you not wait until the staining was done to put the spindles in? Even if you’re worried about scratching the stain, it’d be easier to go back afterwards and touch up the stain than to tape up all those shoes pre-staining. That’s my opinion. I’m curious to know your reasoning. Great work!

Thank you very much! I totally understand your shock on having the wood finished prior! Really it only affects the painter for the job...a lot more work masking off all the iron! Sometimes when I’m installing I might scratch the wood on accident so installing the iron before is easier for me to sand the mistake. This is how DR Horton does their schedule...if it was my home I would install after paint or stain and be extra careful 😉

great video-I'm going to replace existing wood balusters that were nailed and glued to the base. How deep show the 11/16 inch be?

You mentioned cut the spindle one and half inch longer than the height, but what depth do you drill into the hand rail and the bottom ? 🤔 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Drill about 1 1/2” - 2” at the bottom. About 1” at the top for the nub of the baluster, or measure how long the nub is at the top of your baluster and drill a little more than that measurement. Hope this helps and thanks for watching! Have a blessed day 😎

I've always epoxied them in. They never loosen up. The screw trick is definitely faster, but wondering if it will stay tight as long as epoxing them in?

Appreciate it! I’m using a 14” X 7/64” X 1” Diablo metal cutting aluminum oxide blade found at Home Depot. Lowes will carry the Dewalt brand and will also work as long as the specs are the same. Thanks for watching and have a blessed day 😎

Looks great Hunter. I may try that method on one of my installs in future. Curious though...What is preventing the baluster from wanting to turn slightly in the hole and not aligning flush to front? After all, it is a square tube in a larger than normal round hole. Seems to me the torque of the screw will result in a twist. Second, is the reason you are inserting bottom first instead of top first because you are using this screw down method? I typically use a urethane based adhesive in both holes as the product expands whereas, Liquid Nails is a mastic product and can break loose as you suggested. Still, your method seems quite clean and fast. Take care!

Thank you very much for your time and comment! I understand your questions... So round hole and square baluster possibly turning... when I'm holding the baluster align to the front it has 2 points of contact, 2 edges of the baluster against the side of the hole in the material. The screw head will be my 3rd point of contact...run the screw at a downwards parallel angle and tight to the open flat edge baluster (like a 45 degree angle to your material roughly)...drive the screw in so that the head of the screw is pinching tight against the open flat edge (it will scratch the baluster a little underneath the boot). You do need to hold tight on alignment of the baluster during the screw process, the baluster might want to twist on you, like you sad. I find that the baluster moves down on me more often with the screw, so have pressure holding up snug to the handrail as well as pressure aligning to the front. If done correctly you will most of the time indent the baluster edges into the material for a snug fit! With those three edges nice and tight I personally have never warranted a "turned" baluster for a homeowner before. Next the screw down method your mentioning. I drill the handrail with 1/2 paddle bit about 1" deep, I drill the bottom cap with 11/16" about 2-3" deep (some iron are different thicknesses depending on manufacture, I use 5/8 sometimes on the bottom for a tighter hole). Since I have drilled down that far it gives me a little more convenience on cutting (doesn't have to be perfect size) and it gives me the room to drop the baluster down far enough to get it in line of the top hole. Yes with my method I am using the baluster tension at the top to hold it snug and the screw at the bottom. I use to use liquid, then caulk, then epoxy, but please at least try this method on a small flat layout! Im not exaggerating when I say this, after 200+ houses of iron balusters installed for DR Horton, and warrantying each house for 1 year (track home builder here in Denver) I have only replaced damaged iron...NEVER called back for loose balusters! I have the technique down and have taught it to a couple workers of mine, so just a little practice on feel and getting that screw in position! I hope I mentioned what you were looking for... Thank you so much and get back to me with more questions if you have them!

We're getting ready to switch ours out from wood to metal, too. So just to clarify on the drywall screw, you just screwed that in up against the rail and not actually through it, right?
@huntercarlson5446
@huntercarlson5446 2 жыл бұрын
Yes you are correct. I keep the screw parallel and tight to the flat surface of the baluster to start. When the round head of the screw gets to the flat part of the baluster it will pinch the baluster in the hole. It might take a few tries to get the first one snug and secure, but once you get the first one done you will understand the technique for the rest! Thanks for watching and let me know how it goes when you switch them out! Have a blessed day 😎
