I live in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and my significant other has a home in Northern Wisconsin. In my opinion the deer harvest numbers are down, but I don’t think any one thing can be pinpointed. First, yes the bumper crop of acorns accompanied by warmer than usual temperatures without significant snow accumulation means that the deer had a lot more access to food without the need to come to a field or a bait. We have a 135 ish tree apple orchard along with a 1 acre food plot and we had an average of 5 doe with fawns and a couple younger without fawns here regularly. We also had 3 smaller bucks hanging around regularly. Usually we have twice that many during bow season. A good friend of mine owns property in the U.P. where the deer normally yard up in the winter. Usually, on any given year, he averages about 150+ deer at the feed yard every night, and the MI DNR provides him with food to supplement them through the winter. No fences or anything, just supplementing in their natural winter homes. This year there is between 55 and 75. Down by half. Now some of that could have to do with the unseasonably warm temperatures, the deer have not truly “yarded up” all winter. As the owner of an RV park, during hunting season I allow hunters to come use the shower facilities for a small fee per person. So I talk to a lot of the guys during rifle season. Only about 20% of them actually shot a deer this year, and our local Deer Hunters Roundup also had less than half of the usual number of bucks being brought in. I do agree that hunter numbers in general are down. Even though less than half of the people who normally weigh in for the Roundup did, I do also know that the bars with Buck Pools did experience an average of 30% (give or take) fewer entries than in recent years. On top of all that, we have had some pretty rough winters in recent years. One year was really bitter cold and windy in our area. Another year in mid November we got an obscene amount of snow over a very short time period and the deer were caught out of the yards. Last year was a roller coaster, both significant snowfall and the cold temperatures hung on way later into the spring than normal, even once May and June got here the temperatures were quite a bit below average. Finally, and I don’t want to blame it all on this one thing and that is why I saved it for last, we do have an absolutely booming wolf population in the U.P and N Wisc. When you add that on top of other environmental factors that could be effecting the deer population eventually the scales are going to tip. The natural course of the predator/prey cycle is running its course, eventually if deer numbers drop then so will predator numbers, and as prey numbers go up so will predator numbers. While I do personally hope that a limited draw predator hunt happens in both WI and MI, I also don’t seek eradication. I believe that just like other states manage predators such as wolves, mountain lions, etc that so too should we manage those predators in our area. I’m sure there are things that I didn’t even think to take into account, however hopefully I was able to illustrate (from the perspective of person who lives and hunts here) how no one factor can be the cause of low harvest numbers and possibly a general decline in the overall deer herd. Personally I would prefer to get next years data before I jump to conclusions on whether or not deer herd numbers are down or if weather, availability of food and other factors contributed to this years harvest numbers.

Steve talked about tacos Al Pastor. Interestingly, mexico had a large influx of lebanese immigrants a long time ago. Like typical immigrants, they brought their cooking methods but didn't have the same ingredients like back home. Those immigrants brought the vertical spit, now called a trompo in Spanish. That vertical spit was used in lebanon to make shawarmas. Instead of the typical flat bread, they now had tortillas, and instead of the typical beef used, they now had tons of pork. Tacos Al Pastor is now one of the most common and cherished mexican dishes in mexico. I absolutely love how food and culture change with the immigration of people.

It was for sure a mast year in western Oregon for white oaks, On my Oak woodland I didn’t see the abundance of acorns changing the deer’s behavior or feeding habits. The deer regularly graze on a variety of plant material and having an abundance of one type doesn’t change anything.

To touch on the bumper crop acorn production year. A large factor of the amount of mast crop produced each year is the amount of rain in an area. The lower the amount of rain in an area the higher the mast crop production. The more rainfall the lower the mast production. This is to increase the rate of reproduction in case of stand of trees sruggles or dies due to drought. During drought years the stand of trees puts all of its energy into producing crop.

From a hunter, working dog lover, and Texas panhandle cattle and horse guy, ask your veterinarian about Rattler Antivenom. It can be used in multiple species, and has a loooooooonnnngggg shelf life so it is much cheaper for a vet to keep in inventory, especially rural vets. Cal, if you are going to snake country, contact a vet in the area and ask if they have Rattler antivenom on their shelf. It is literally an IV bag and works wonders for bites. Instead of thousands of dollars for treatment it is closer to $500 and will save the animals life in a hurry. It can treat everything from a chihuahua to an elephant. I am not affiliated with the product in any way and get no kick back whatsoever from them. I am always surprised that hunters will spend years planning a hunting trip and not think twice about planning for emergency medicine for their animal they have spent years training. Just google veterinarian within a range of where you are going to be.

Hearing about this lady as a "professional harasser" and has a Posse..seriously?, when I lived in N. California, and I was taking the Hunter safety course, we had a guest speaker, a Game Warden, he spoke on something like this and he told all of us "I don't care if its my day off and I'm in my sweats an T-shirt watching the Game, hanging with family, if I get a call about someone/people harassing Hunters..I'll grab my badge/ side arm and I'm on my way, cause for one thing it's ILLEGAL to harass hunters and wildgame in order to deter them from danger during hunting season and I'll arrest them without hesitation" glad to know this, I haven't had anyone give me any crap in the woods yet.

Cal definitely missed the mark on the Akerns discussion. In Wi we had a record number of akerns drop this year. This correlated (but not 100% can say caused) a lower harvest of deer and especially bear. Bears did not need to travel to baits to feed same as deer. I would like to see cal stalk a bear in farm country or even hardwoods and get close enough for a shot. Not gonna happen. Same as deer, almost impossible to ground stalk a mature buck or even set up and sit a stand where a mature buck is living. I had a very nice mature 10 point that rarely moved out of a 5 acre plot of woods all season. Maybe I’m just not that skilled of a bow hunter but there was no way I could ever sneak into that woods without him spooking out.
@gregggwidt1109 ай бұрын
100 percent warrants more discussion - classic wi answer on a low deer harvest is wolves, bears, crossbows, low hunters, too many doe permits rince recycle and repeat, blame-blame-blame without asking or thinking about other possibilities or taking the time to understand other perspectives. All of that has an impact, unquestionably, on the deer harvest, but there is so much more when you have a major change in a single year as opposed to a statistical nuance to review significant trend over 3-5 years. Nature does nature things and we need to pay attention. Eg. compare data against motor vehicle accident numbers is probably one of the more consitent and reliable data points, yet nobody will talk about it as it wont fit the easy narrative of wolves, crossbows, and doe permits.
