Started picking agates here as a child, over 70 years ago. Mostly they were the size of a dime, rarely larger. Came home with jars full. Most colorful beach in Michigan. Icy deep water. Family favorite for several generations.

I know I've said this, but it never ceases to amaze me that y'all have unakite in Michigan. I was in northern Ohio a month ago or so and asked a fellow about gemstones and such, but anyway, I told him I was from East-Tennessee and he said "Oh, yeah, y'all have a whole mountain of unakite" 🙂
@MichiganRocks

@@MichiganRocks Rob, it's in the as far eastern Tennessee as ya get. Yeah, about 3+/- hours from Cookeville. I have some friends that live in Baxter, near Cookeville. Unaka Moutain Range; Erwin, Hampton, Mountain City. Smaller areas like Bulah Dean and Flag Pond
@MichiganRocks

@@JohnByington-ux7lx I did know that unakite was named after the Unaka Mountains. So you're saying pretty much anywhere in that range, I could easily find unakite bedrock? Next time I'm going south, I'll have to look at the possibility of seeing that.

@@MichiganRocks I'm not much of a rock hound and my friend that was just passed away two weeks ago, but he was telling me that on I-26 from Erwin to the N.C. line on the west (north) bound lane, the road crew has uncovered a unakite vein that is accessible from the road. He said that it was easier to see in the winter, when the foliage was died off and the sun traveled low in the sky.

My favorite piece of banded iron was the first rock I found at LGP. It was so brilliant and differentiated that you couldn't miss it from ten yards away. It looked like one of those velvet ants that we have down our way. It's about the size of my thumb. I also found some pieces maybe even better there, as far as size, but the first one told me that I had arrived at a great place after an eleven-hour drive from home. I left at 4:30 am and got to the beach at 3:30pm. I was staying in Ironwood but I went directly to the LGP beach and had so much fun that I stayed there another whole day.

Rob, I see where you are traveling across the UP. If you happen to go near Calumet I thoroughly recommend stopping to talk to Alex @ Rock Pickers Paradise. He is in his 80's and has been prospecting, mining & collecting rocks his entire life and is the most knowledgable person I have met. And one other comment, I have never heard you speak about collecting near Marquette or else I missed it. One of my favorite beaches is the area just West of Black Rocks. Almost every rock is beautiful there. Good luck.
@MichiganRocks

My sister lives in Lake Linden, so I'm in that area almost every summer. I'll stop in and talk to Alex next time I'm there. I've been to that store before, but I think it was a woman working there. It's been a few years, so I might be remembering wrong. I have not picked rocks much in the Marquette area, although my mom and another sister both live there and I visit several times each year. I hunted between Presque Isle and Picnic Rocks, closer to Picnic Rocks. I have not hunted on Presque Isle. Is the beach you're talking about on Presque Isle? I'll be sure to check that out. I have looked for possible hunting locations there, but just haven't found much.
@RickyPansiera
@RickyPansiera Жыл бұрын
@@MichiganRocks Yes, out at the very end of Presque Isle. As you come around the bend in the road there is a gravel drive leading you down to a parking area @ Black Rocks. If you walk straight north there are 5 coves just to the West of Black Rocks. Also, if you have a boat or take your Kayak out around the seawall & light and come straight back into the beach you shall find 3 or 4 sea caves that are also fantastic. And finally, if you go out to Partridge Island there is also fantastic hunting there. I found a 4 pound Agate of a lifetime there just off the East side shoreline. There are no trespassing signs on the Island, but I just stay out in the water area.

Rob, another great video. Can you possibly add a link in the description to your Yooperlight flashlight? I checked your Amazon channel and couldn’t find one. I would love your recommendation if possible. thanks.

Michigan Rock's no doubt, if there was ever any. On lake Michigans beaches the flavors of rocks are many. Perhaps not to the taste of each, yet we take you to a different beach. The far western U.P. offers tasty treats in it's ev'ry nook and cranny!

Beautful stream & hillside at 10:20, but the erosion is profound throughout the shoreline. The banded iron formation you found at 8:38 & the one afterwards was really nice. Muddy waters always make it frustrating. Interesting location. Kept looking for agates along with you. Hello to Nancy.
