Some observations. All of the fossils you're finding are from the Hudson Bay region and were brought down by glacial ice. Your blue chalcedony was likely encased in dolomite which is why it didn't bubble vigorously. However, that really reminds me of something you'd find in the desert southwest, not along the shores of Lake Superior. Your red "mystery rock" at 11:30 could be several things, but very likely something silicified. Would have to look at it in person to hazard any reasonable guess.
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks Жыл бұрын
Thanks, Paul. It's always nice to have an actual geologist checking our work! I knew the fossils weren't from right there since there's no limestone bedrock like in Lake Huron near me. I had no idea they came all the way from Hudson Bay though. That's a fun fact! Thanks for the guess on the dolomite. It looked like sandstone or limestone to me. I wasn't aware that dolomite doesn't react strongly to acid. The only dolomite I'm really familiar with is Kona dolomite from Marquette. That mystery rock is the number one rock I'd like to have identified. I doubt there's a name for it since no one has every told me one, but there should be. It's very recognizable and very common in the eastern U.P. Everyone I go up there with picks a lot of them up, wondering if they're agates. They're clearly not agates, but they have some translucency to them that really grabs your attention. They also have several layers of what I assume are different minerals.

Sam just had some amazing luck! He found quite a few really awesome agates! And you had a few too, but not as many as Sam found! There were quite a few not agates but were really cool and interesting looking rocks! The whole beach was covered in all different colors and types of beautiful rocks! I'm so used to our beaches and lakes here in Oregon, where 95% of the rocks are basalt so all you see is ugly dark grey to black rocks. Your beach is just an array of beautiful colors and patterns and not hardly a plain basalt rock out there! It's gorgeous! And I know the vast majority of them are granite, but they sure are a lovely granite! And they all are just so colorful! So it's no wonder that even your agates are that beautiful red! Great hunting, even though it was cold and wet, I'm sure the finds kind of made up for it, at least for Sam anyways! And that weird Rick Sam found and cut, was just strange! And it even has a weird reaction to the acid! I've never seen anything like that before! I have no idea! Thanks for sharing!

The variety of rocks we have is just amazing. I have been to beaches where most of the rocks are the same color and it's just not as much fun. Cold and wet is just one of the things you have to deal with in the U.P. It's not a place for wimps. The great rocks make up for it. Sam is not just lucky. He consistently finds more than I do. I think he's just more focused than I am, plus he has younger eyes. He deserves credit for his skills.

I've only been in eastern Michigan once in my life, in mid-1960's, a trip to see my mother's 2nd cousins. Didn't know anything about Lake Superior Agates at that time, I've learned quite a bit since those long ago days. By the time the early 1970's came around, I had read articles in The Lapidary Journal, Rock & Gem, and least another non-technical magazine that I could understand w/o degrees in chemistry and geology. On a trip to Wisconsin, I located a rock shop and bought a bag of LSA. Cut a few pieces which have red banding and eyes. Beautiful stones. I'll bet you have found some interesting stones along those shores. Wherever I've traveled throughout the U.S. and eastern Canada I've always picked up stones: landscape stones alongside motels/hotels, gravel side-roads where I might have pulled over to take a break or eat a bite. Dug by fingers in the dirt, interesting looking stones. Can only guess what the mineral make-up is of these stones. Glad I've found your YT channel and will happily follow as you find stones to 'share'.

16:40 is an interesting one. The lighter particulate is sometimes more scattered like stars in an agate, but I have some Mottle Agates that it groups tightly the same way. It gives it a cherty look at first glance, but lacks the slight abrasiveness you would expect to feel in the rub. Personally I think it's a great find. Even if it is not a LSA, it is really a beautiful and rare blue Chalcedony, but i believe it's a agate.

I am a wee bit of a rock hound. I couldn't tell you the names of half the rocks I find. Its like "Oh! Look at the pretty!" Lol! I am more of a fossil and artifact hunter. I met WILDKYLE the other day down here in southern Mi. I have watched all his videos and always thought, I would like to meet that young man. I was in one of our local stores and was checking out when to my disbelief, he walked in to the store. Very awesome young man! He got me started watching your videos. You find some very interesting rocks and fossils. Thanks for sharing.

Kyle is great. It's quite a coincidence to run into him in a store like that. We have run into people on beaches who recognized both of us, but that's a lot more likely.

We went up to Deception Pass one time, and that was a GRAND place - - my outlook comes from growing up on a very boring beach (in my opinion, but I know many who think it is grand) ... I have not done any serious rockhounding, but maybe this summer. Anyway, I grew up on the Washington side of the Columbia River. Oregon's beaches were very interesting to me when I was growing up, but I hardly ever saw it. Now, we are in Eastern Washington and have enough rocks on the ranch to keep us busy just moving them out of the way! Live is just a series of todays, with some "maybe tomorrow" moments, but we have been very blessed@@MichiganRocks

I don't think you should probably go here. I doubt there are any charging stations close by. I have to always remember to fill up with gas while I have the chance so I don't get stuck down one of the long trails without enough.

Great finds, Sam really has an eye for em. I bet he'd be a wiz at minding Morel's. (something else you could add to your channel would be a mushroom hunt, I'd watch it for sure) I had to smile when you hid the piece of magnatite, when you tossed it down at the first beach my first thought was, Nooo... that it would make a great stash rock and also that I didn't want to be That Guy, who complains about the rocks you don't keep. LOL I'd put it in my rock garden, I have a Yin Yang symbol and those look great in the dark part. I find some stones, once in a great while, with that same type of pattern, (that looks almost like hieroglyphics if you know what I mean), but they are made out of black chert that is super waxy. I'm not even sure that black waxy chert is chert but I can't think of what else it could be.

I didn't want that magnetite, but after dropping it, I remembered my little game. I'm glad I picked that one back up, it's a cool rock. Nancy and I started to make a morel hunting video one year but we didn't find many at all. Last year we had our best season ever (not that we're big morel hunters) and found enough to fill a frying pan. Unfortunately, I didn't bring the camera that day. This year, I missed morel season because I was on my big rock hunting trip. Maybe next year.

I enjoyed almost every minute of this video. Up until Sam went to stash the rocks by the tree. his actions and the look of the day made me itch and scratch all over. I don't have one mosquito in my house, but I'd swear they were carrying me away as the video ended. 🙂🤣😂

That was absolutely miserable. The mosquitos are just horrible in the woods. We even had a few on the beaches the days we were there. Mosquitos are usually not a problem on the beach. The mosquitos were just as bad at our campsite. We had a Thermacell that helped. We knew we weren't going to get a shower for four days, so neither of us really wanted to put on a lot of bug spray. The second night, we both headed to our tents at 8:00 because of the bugs. On the third night, we moved to the mouth of the Two Hearted River campground and there were no bugs at all.
