At 14:52 in the video you were asking what that was. It is a kerosene pot used for dashing kerosene on your firewood before starting the fire. You leave the dasher in the pot of kerosene, it soaks it up and will sprinkle a good amount onto the firewood making starting the fire easier. My grandfather had one that sat on the mantel, and he would swing the dasher a couple of times on the firewood before lighting. It has been over sixty years since I have seen another one, and that brought back a flood of memories. Really enjoy your videos. Thanks for making them.

I have a question. I have my great-grandmother's/grandmother's/mother's skillets. One smallish and one largish. Both are beautiful on the inside, and have been well cared for. But both have this crust all over the sides on the outside. I'm thinking it may be from fruit cobbler boiling over and then becoming so solid on the sides in the oven that no one had time to remove it. It's about an eighth of an inch thick in some places. It's not rust. How can I safely remove it? Someone a long time ago suggested sand blasting, but that just sounded like it would hurt the pan so I've never been willing to hand it over to someone else to do that to it.
@castIroncookware

The most simple and safest way to strip a cast iron pan is with lye. You can do that either by using a lye tank or the oven spray cleaner in a bag method. I have a couple of videos on that subject if you are interested in checking them out.
